I totally second what Imogen said- I always had issues with ballet flats slipping until I would put heel inserts into them. They would stop slipping and no more blisters- yay! They're just a few dollars and make ballet flats much more comfy. I like the suedey-feeling ones by Dr. Scholl best, but there are also some that are more rubbery in texture that may help keep flats on more securely.

I find that Dr Scholl makes a great little product from suede that you stick on the shoe where your heel goes in, and it keeps your ballet flats from falling off (as I have this issue myself), and then you no longer need to try and grip the shoe with your toes to keep them on.

I have never found a pair of ballet flats that is comfortable. The last time I wore a pair, I ended up hobbling around the mall and had to ask a security guard for a bandaid for my aching heel. They are always too tight on my big toe, but if I go up a size they slip out at the back and are still too tight in the toe.

So far, my new Me Too flats seem to be staying on! I'm not sure about how they will do with an orthotic yet but so far, they are squishy enough that they have some great potential.

Happylife, are your feet narrow? If the flats slip at the side, then that might be the issue. Have you tried narrow sizes? Nordstrom and the online shoe retailers (Zappos, Piperlime, Endless etc.) all have many styles in narrow sizes, and there are also speciality retailers for non-standard sizes which you can find in online searches.

And have you tried the MeToo flats that many YLF members have? I've heard only rave reviews about them.

I personally like shoes with more structure than the ballet flat. Hoses for courses.

HL - I've given up on ballet flats because none of them have room for an orthotic insert. There just aren't made to take them and I can't wear a flat without mine. I've been looking for flats that have a slight heel, which I think means they are no longer ballet flats. I also have a narrow heel and shoes often slip when I walk.

I just bought a pair of Privos -- it didn't quite have room for my inserts so I ripped out the insole that was there (it was fairly thin). I'm not sure yet that they are 8 hour shoes but so far they are working pretty well.

I also have a pair of Merrell flats that had a removable insole, although they look much more casual. I can usually wear them all day.

Is it just a matter of trial and error (it seems I have tried 100 pairs) to find flats that stay on when you walk and do not gap out at the sides?

I have to resort to mary janes with the strap near my toes so far because I have not found flats that stay on. When i go down a size my toes seem scrunched.

I would be in heaven if I found flats that:

1. did not slip off when walking

2. gave my toes enough room

3. had room for orthotic

4. looked smart casual

Is this too tall an order?
