I was going to suggest black, but there are some great suggestions here. I like the idea of teal, different and so pretty!

Well I took another look at my teal bag and I think it does work pretty well after all. Which is great, because I can start looking for a fabulous bag that also goes with my winter coats. Thanks everyone, it really is appreciated. Now I just have to get a full-length mirror (I know I know) so I can take some pics of all the great ideas I am getting from this website!

I think the Coach Classic Stewardess Bag in Mahogany would be perfect:

depend on your style. instead of contrast between accessories like boots and bag, you could make contrast of your clothes, boots and bag are in the same tone like brown or black. in this case, i suggest boho bags or kinda vintage item like Mulberry alexa bag!

Oddly enough... I have a dark, greyish teal bag! And I have paired teal and brown together before. I also agree teal goes with many colours. I love my teal bag with my pumpin cardi or my tomato red peacoat. But I'm not sure it works with my jacket... maybe because the jacket is short and sporty and the bag is a courier style. So both are casual but I think the bag is too big & heavy for the jacket or something... but I am going to play with it some more.
I like the idea of burgundy, and the animal prints. I'm not sure about a dressy, shiny leather bag with the jacket though. I need to keep an open mind! I think I need to wear the boots and jacket to winners and just try a bunch of different things. I love the direction you've all sent me in - colour, pattern etc - rather than basic brown or black., which I didn't really want anyway

When in doubt, go with teal. It really works with almost everything.

Any muted deep shade would work very nicely, or lighter shades that are a bit muddier. Think colors that have some brown mixed into them: burgundy, plum, mustard, olive, army blue, teal, etc. For lower contrast go with darker shades that have more brown in them, and for higher contrast go with lighter shades that have less brown and more of the color in them.

An animal print would be fabulous, but I don't know if you might think that's too much. It goes with all kinds of colors and does pattern mix - stripes, some florals, others. I've been wearing my leopard print ballet flats with red and cobalt skinnies, as well as denim and black, of course. I've paired them with black and brown bags, but also red and orange. It'd be fun with your leather jacket!

anything in the chocolate or taupe family would be great depending on if you wanted to go more subtle or more obvious. or you could go with a color like this burgundy which is really a neutral.

here's the search from "brown cross body handbag" at zappos.

I bought the mid-heel Land's End boots in pic #1, but the colour is much more accurate in pic #2 (a higher boot). I already had a short, simple leather jacket in very similar leather - soft, matte, light taupey brown. But I have no idea what kind of bag would work with these two pieces. I don't want it matchy-matchy, and would appreciate high and low contrast suggestions. I actually don't have a basic brown OR black bag right now so I would love to fill that warddrobe hole - but I can't picture anything that would work! Any ideas/suggestions appreciated.
