Isabel, I don't frequent the forum as much as I"d like to these days but the title of this thread caught my attention. I am very sorry to hear of your situation and, like others, I want to give you kudos for your attitude. I"m a firm believer that our attitudes can help us get through a lot of adversity. You have done a lot of good in your life - think of where your sister would be without you. So it's no surprise that all sorts of doors are opening for you now and people are helping you. I am glad that you have reached out even to share your story as there's support in there too.

I caught a sizeable lump last year through a self exam. It wasn't visible on multiple mammos due to my high breast density. The ultrasound couldn't rule it out either. Fortunately the needle biopsy did. I felt truly lucky to have had a wake up call and "walk away" this time. I still remember the cold, hard, roiling mass of fear that had taken residence in my stomach for those 3 long weeks. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you every day. Especially during this wait. Please do keep us posted both when you see the upside and also if you are feeling down.

Hugs.

Jonsey, you are so right. It IS the human condition. I said the other day to my best friend ( who was devastated by the news ) , I have a human body, it will get sick. The best I can do is to access all that is given me to get better. And luckily, I have access everything I need for this fight. Everything. I how can I not feel good about it ?

Sarah and Aida, I have a dear friend who was the director for several group homes for mentally disabled adults ( my sister is one ). She runs a suicide prevention program now. She has taught me that even in the midst of tragedy, there are some very unique and funny moments. And of course in many situations there simply are not. But I learned to look at some things as if they were a scene in a movie and sitting in a doctor's office being told, in all seriousness, that you don't have enough fat in your butt to use on your breast but there might be in your mid-section was sooooooo surreal and just funny to me. As in, am I really having this conversation? How did we get from breast cancer to lack of butt fat ????? Really ?

Your insights are so moving and thoughtful. It's funny how sometimes when you are younger you think that lots of people have this "smooth sailing" type of life, and you want that too. As you age, and you experience tragedy, setbacks, major changes, etc., and know others going through the same things, you realize that this *is* the human condition. We are all doing our best to deal with what life hands us, move forward, be kind to each other, and leave something meaningful behind...You seem to have such a marvelous perspective--you are obviously a generous, open, caring person. I will be thinking of you!

years ago my mother received a diagnosis that sounds almost identical to yours. she's been in remission for a little over ten years now when detected early BRCA is very treatable... although knowing that doesn't necessarily make the experience less scary. wishing you the best of luck! (also, from the way my mom describes it the BRCA survivor community is pretty wonderful in terms of supporting each other... so you don't have to go through it alone ).

Bookarella, this is not about having anything taken away from me. I am SOOOO glad you told us. I decided to post because I just knew, that with the unfortunate prevalence of breast cancer, that someone else had to be going through it.

It is nerve wracking. Unfortunately, we mostly hear about the unsucessful breast cancer stories, but there are literally a hundred thousand plus that turn out well every year.

I also have very dense breasts and it was concluded that is why all three mammograms were "normal". I also had an "atypical" breast biopsy 14 years ago. So PLEASE see a breast surgeon and do an MRI. And do your self exams religiously. And remember to always tell whoever is following you that you want a breast ultra sound and/or an MRI.

I am going to bug you about this !!! Please take care of yourself.......the chances of having a curable cancer is a great gift to give yourself.

GOOD LUCK !!!

I am sorry that you have to go through this, but glad that you are able to see the silver lining of the situation. Your positive attitude will certainly be a factor in your cancer experience and will spread to those around you. Not to take away from you or anything, but I have been going through my own issues related to breast cancer so this really struck a chord with me. Just yesterday I had to go back for more extensive mammography testing and breast sonograms due to a suspicious mammogram the previous week plus an atypical result on the breast pap exam. While I did get good results yesterday, I truly felt like things were not going to go so well, and my mind went to some very unpleasant places. They still would like for me to see a breast surgeon and have a breast MRI just to be sure all is good for now. I did find out that from now on based on my "atypia" and my dense breast tissue I at a high risk for developing this type of cancer. That is actually good so now we can all keep an extra careful eye on things. I will be praying for you and your family and wish you the very best. Sounds like you are in great hands!

Elisabeth, GOOD LUCK to you !!! I am sorry to hear about that. I know how you feel. I have severe endometriosis and because of the treatments I will need for the cancer, I will probably have a hysterectomy. We will be sisters in this !!!! We will get through this spiritually in tact. Believe in that Elisabeth !

Please let us know how you make out.

Isabel, I wish you the best of luck. It sounds like your chances are very good, and you have many people rooting for you! Here's hoping your surgery is straightforward and they get it all. I'm facing a hysterectomy myself, so I can easily imagine how you feel right now. It sounds like you are getting prompt medical care, too, which is important. Good luck!
