Oh Kate, what lovely advice Laura G gave you. It made me cry. She is so right that that mean voice in your head is lying to you. I understand about that voice- I have one too. I have learned I can also cultivate a kind and understanding voice which gives me a break. And have learned to appreciate my own uniqueness. I hope the YLF forum can help you do the same. Angie is a kind and accepting person who sets the tone here.

People can say mean things for selfish or ignorant reasons. Don't let it get to you and know that you are beautiful.

Aw Kate, it makes me so sad to hear you call yourself ugly. As someone who has felt both ugly and beautiful in the same body, I can tell you for a fact that it's not the body that makes you feel that way. It's the mind. It's the things you say to yourself, inside your own head.

Discovering your own style is a fascinating journey, one that never ends. But if you hired the best stylist in the world right now to answer all your questions and choose the perfect wardrobe for you, that would not make you appreciate your own beauty, not as long as you're listening to that mean voice. That voice lies--I speak from experience.

If you had a beautiful little daughter, one who looked a lot like you, how would you talk to her? What would you say to her about her own special beauty, her unique gifts? Those are the things you need to say to yourself. Those are the true things. Your own beauty is right in front of you, and you're looking past it. It truly is up to you to choose what you see, and when you see what's best in you, others will see it too.

This is pretty far from fashion advice, but I hope it makes some kind of sense.

The Cat on "Bad look"

Your face and hair look very feminine. You are beautiful. However, there are many ways to look beautiful.

I don't know how you dress. Some women conscientiously dress in a more or less masculine or androgynous way (think for instance of the tomboy style, which can indeed be attractive and charming!) and those women would most probably view it as a compliment if they were described by such words. :-)

However, those words made you feel bad, so I suppose they are not expressing your personal style goals. Well, then this is an opportunity for you to consider how you would like to be described. What is your style like? And what can you do to emphasize the style you prefer, and, just as important, the aspects of your personality and your appearance that you would like others to see more clearly?

Having a personal style, some real friends who support and encourage you, and some worthwhile goals in life, make it easier to ignore bad comments. You can't please everyone, you know, and that's OK. And you can't always avoid negative comments from others. But YOU decide how much you will let others' comments affect you.

Thank you for your advice.
I really need to figure out my look and to choose a style ( and a haircut) that would fit me, in order to stop feeling so ugly

I am notoriously clueless about fashion acronyms, and Kibbe is no different. I even looked it up and got further confused.

Everything I learned about dressing my body in this second half of my life I owe to Angie and her YLF followers. There are a lot of fashion blogs out there, but Angie's is far and away the best. Whatever Kibbe means, I encourage you to just keep reading and looking in these archives for inspiration. I can pretty much guarantee your style journey will advance, one tip at a time.

I've never thought to look like Sophia Loren actually but thank you very much! I guess so actually I thought it was because of my jawline and my thin body.

To Laura G. : thank you very much for both your short and long answer. You made me feel way better.

The long answer is, what kind of a look do *you* like? Some on the list choose an androgynous look, some choose a more traditional feminine look, and those are far from the only choices.

Audrey Hepburn, to name one example from your Kibbe post, could have done an androgynous look with her build, but she went with a very feminine gamine look instead. Her choice.

And your choice, nobody else's. If you're not sure what your own true look is, try making a Pinterest mood board. Just pin what you love. As you go along you'll start to see that your favorites have some things in common. Those are the things that are essential to your style. Once you have quite a few photos, you'll start to see that some you pinned earlier don't seem to fit--they lack some element that's essential for you. You'll be on your way to defining your own look. Have fun!
