I think you are on the right track already with a dress and metallic sandals - dressy but not too much. I especially like the longer asymmetric dresses in blue and blush in your examples - they look the most classy IMO.

In my mind, I started with the shoes. Before I got to the "flip flop" sentence, I was picturing a metallic or animal print wedge heel, and then I'd dress up from there. A simple shape in the dress, especially a black dress, that's most flattering to your body type, will read as anything from casual-to-dressy, depending on what others are wearing. Have fun with the jewelry, too!

I think you are off to a good start...I have to agree with Jules, the pieces you showed are a bit more clubby and night out...I would keep it elegant, chic, flowy...You get the driff...With time ahead, you can shop and discover the perfect dress...

They have about an acre of backyard space thats broken up into two sections. One is smaller with a small deck, flowers and some trees and the other side is larger and opens up into a small forrest.

I'd take my cues from what you know of the couple and the backyard. Does "backyard" to this group mean a beautifully landscaped series of terraces, pools, and water features, beautifully catered? Or does backyard mean the small area of grass behind the house with a local BBQ supplying the food? Either one could make a great wedding, to my way of thinking, but they would call for different dress codes.

They might ask for flip flops because they don't plan on covering the yard with a floor, and don't want women's heels to ruin the lawn or trudge dirt into the house. Flip flops are the easiest on grass. Of the options you posted, I think the one on the far left is best. You don't know what the bug situation will be, so I'd opt for a cover-up of some kind.

Some of those read a little sexy/club wear to me for a wedding (cutouts, short + bodycon). A little skin is fine but I'd keep it drapey and elegant. I'm a little surprised at flip flops because that to me implies VERY casual, but maybe they just didn't want people running out to buy new, terrain-appropriate dressy footwear? Sounds like you have some leeway, but I'd lean away from the overtly sexy pieces.

They might be recommending flip flops and sandals without heels because walking on grass, or even across grass to get to a terrace can be very difficult in heels, I'd follow their lead on this and stay flat or low wedge.
I'm not a fan of black at weddings unless they're very formal and it's likely that most of the women attending will be wearing black. Same for showing a lot of skin or wearing a conspicuous amount of white.
So I guess if I was choosing for you I'd filter the options you already have through the conditions above.
You're off to such a good start, I'm thinking you're going to look fantastic.

i'm going to a wedding in august, we just received in the invitation so obviously i'm already planning my outfit. the time/location/invitation is so all over the place it's hard to tell what's appropriate for attire.

first of all, its a backyard wedding in august. BUT the ceremony starts at 6pm so to me that means a little dressier than a typical "backyard" wedding. the invitation says semi-formal so again, a little dressy BUT then it also says "dress for summer! flip flops and sandals without heels" so that sounds super casual.

what would be the safest to wear so i'm not too casual but not over dressed?
i made a couple of collages while browsing for ideas. what do you guys think?
