I did something similar in January for the 30 x 30 challenge and it really helped to clarify what I reach for and what I like to wear. I started with about 10 essential items and then added gradually over the month. I ended up with ~ 25 items at the end of the month. I also identified a few holes also.

I do a variation of this. I take everything out, category by category and put it on my bed. Back in go all the pieces I’m actively wearing, or have worn, in the last 12 months, excluding anything that’s worn out. At that point, what’s left on my bed is items across all categories that are questionable. These I assess carefully. Is it special occasion wear, that I still enjoy? Can it be restyled? Does it fit? Do I have too many of this type of item for my current lifestyle? Items that are still in good condition and can be styled differently go back in, but are on a short time schedule to get worn. And the rest I move on out.

Your approach makes so much sense to me. I did something similar once, but it was only on paper since I had no place to store the leftovers. I did go quite beyond a two week capsule and picked my favorite 100 things. It was a fun exercise, but because I never did it physically, I'm not sure how functional it would have been. I hope you give this a shot and report back!

Someone here did something like this, creating a "boutique" in an extra closet and "shopping" from it when she needed something more than what she had in her working closet. I hope that she chimes in here or someone can direct you to those threads.

It's a different take on the idea of turning all the hangers around backwards and if it gets worn then the hanger gets turned around normal. after a set time period, anything still hanging backwards goes.
If moving it all out & adding back what you love works for you, then that's the perfect solution for you. Proud of you for figuring out a way to start, because I totally get it--it is hard to do a closet edit sometimes!

YES. Earlier this year, I removed every single thing from my closets. I put everything in a unused closet. Things that got worn and were liked were put back in my working closet. After a month or two, I started assessing the items in the unused closet. My goal was to figure why they didn't worn and returned to the working closet. It helped me with editing and outfit creation.

That sounds like a very creative approach. It would be like "shopping your closet" for a sequence of trips. You could move everything to the storage closet and then go "shop" for your trip, moving your selections to your main closet. It sounds intriguing!

I think Project 333 is an approach along those lines -- people who do that often take everything out of the closet except for their Project 333 capsule and box up the rest.

It certainly sounds like something worth trying, considering how you connect with that streamlined, additive (rather than subtractive) approach. Give it a whirl, and let us know how it goes!

Yep, I've heard of moving everything to a different room and only adding back as you wear things. It makes a lot of sense to me, except you'd have to do it for an entire year to hit all the seasons, and you still might have a couple "very rarely wear" favorites you'd want to keep. I like your "taking a trip" idea!

I have needed to do a MAJOR closet edit for quite some time now (years)---and the longer it goes, of course, the more dreaded the task becomes. It's so strange, because I CRAVE an edited closet, and I KNOW that I am MOST happy with my wardrobe when I am traveling---i.e., when it has been severely edited to fit in a carry-on suitcase. I once traveled for an ENTIRE summer with a tiny wardrobe/belongings as I rode my bike across North America, and carried all my gear in 4 bike bags, and a handlebar bag, and I was SO HAPPY with the items I so carefully chose for the journey. I know simplicity, I love simplicity, I crave simplicity---yet I have some major hurdle to treating myself to an edited closet. I'm wondering about a "work around" to editing, and wonder if anyone has tried this approach?

Has anyone removed EVERYTHING from their closet and then repopulated the closet with items they might take on a two week trip to their town/climate? I think I might do better, psychologically, if I were ADDING things INTO my closet (forcing me to choose the things I LOVE right off the bat, rather than trying to ferret out the things I DON'T LOVE) rather than SUBTRACTING and facing the things that were mistakes, the things that don't fit, the things that need a little something to be "right". What if I just "packed my closet" for a two week trip? Anyway. I'd be left with a big pile of things to put somewhere else---but I do have a storage closet where I suppose I could toss it all and live for two weeks and see how that felt. Any feedback on this approach?

I'm really enjoying reading everyone's unique situation.
