The fact that so many of us have experienced the same difficulty holding out for interesting "smart casual" tops should make it clear that the problem is not so much with us and our hard-to-change patterns, as with the available offerings! Let's face it: that amazing, perfect-fitting, problem-solving top in a flattering color, fabric and silhouette--preferably with something a little extra in the design to make it stand out--is as rare as a unicorn. We end up buying the consolation piece out of frustration, not certain that the thing we're looking for really exists.

I used to be even harder to fit, so if something fits and looks relatively good on me I can get sidetracked and buy it, even if it is just meh. So I relate.

This topic sure in inspiring some fascinating discussion!

Suz I have to ask you why my comment cracked you up..:-) Laughing with empathy perhaps?

I totally agree that a couple of not-so-great purchases a year are totally ok. No one is perfect. I think I'm making a lot of mistakes right now because I'm in transition but I'm getting pretty good at recognizing them in time to return them. And yes I do agree that only solution is more shopping...sounds kinda funny but it's true. YAY...MORE SHOPPING..**claps hands**.

The journey continues...yesterday we visited friends in the city (Boston) and went to lunch and a concert, and I was ok with what I wore but only ok. No great crisis but came home wishing I had worn something different, something I can't really name but is definitely more "smart casual" than what I did wear.

Good that you returned the sunglasses and watch if you don't like them.

And yes you are so right about life changes and wardrobe changes...that totally resonates with me.

Collete thanks so much for the kinds words. Wow, 5 bags of shoes!!! I bet that's how many I have total of the ones I want to keep Love the idea of tank top emergencies. You should start hanging out at food trucks that sell a lot of tomato sauced foods and eat them in a very messy manner; that would take care of your surplus of tank tops! Your comments about YLF so true!

DonnaF yes a topper would work but not in the middle of summer. I've been tracking what I wear and I have not needed or worn a topper since the middle of June. Ah...two more addiction for you...but wardrobe addictions are among the best ones to have IMHO. They might hurt your wallet but they will never hurt YOU.

Jazzy Dance I am with you. It gets to be an endless loop that's hard to break out of.

Runcarla...very interesting maybe I'll start up a new topic on this.

Thanks Astrid...yes you get it too.

Lyn D agree that sometimes you find the best stuff when you're not looking for it.

I can relate as only yesterday I found myself trying on another sleeveless top that I don't need, just because it was on sale and in my size!
It was a waste of time, and yet, some of my best purchases have been found when I wasn't actually looking for them.
Sometimes it pays to shop when you don't really have needs or wardrobe holes to fill!

I've also tried to shop for cute summer tops that aren't t-shirts and it was a total failure. Probably because I don't want polyester and I want something I can wear without an underlayer. Impossible to find. Now I'm probably going to order a few inexpensive plain basic t-shirts to wear with my jeans and basic shorts on our holiday, because all the t-shirts I wanted to replace are rather worn out and a decent looking basic t-shirt is better than a worn out basic t-shirt. Although I'm still mourning all those cute woven summer tops I can see cristal clear in my mind's eye...

I think it's a transitional issue, largely...it has to do with coming up with a new vision/ new version of ourselves.

It seems to be a particular problem for women moving from demanding and somewhat conservative professional careers to retirement or a more flexible type of work situation.

As long as the work wardrobe is the priority, people tend to put their money and perhaps even creative energy into those clothes. The weekend is about errands, gardens, ferrying kids, exercise -- whatever. But it doesn't demand much in the way of "outfits" except for "going out" -- and that's a separate capsule.

But if one's whole life is casual, schlubbing around in workout gear or a ratty old tee and baggy jeans suddenly becomes less appealing. Yet at the same time, it's all too easy to revert to what is familiar.

Well, Chris, your comment on 'regular casual' vs 'smart casual' had me pricking up my ears. The topic probably deserves it's own thread. I've spent way more than 48 hours trying to figure out why my attempts at 'smart casual' don't quite hit the mark. It probably has something to do with T- shirts.

Oh man, I so get this. I really understand the bit about wanting to buy smart casual vs. just casual tops. This is something I am trying to do, too, though I continually want to buy another striped casual sleeveless top or t-shirt. The more items I buy that don't actually fill a wardrobe gap, the more overwhelmed and dissatisfied I feel.

I just wanted to say that maybe a topper could turn those Ts from *casual* to *smart casual*. . .But then, you probably run warmer than I.

I have quite a few tank tops so am trying to train myself to wear them with the many, many toppers I've collected. . .Uh, guess I've just identified two addictions.

It is quite a journey to learn not to buy something just because it fits, flatters, and is a good price and even goes with other stuff in the wardrobe. I am still working that out, probably because I went so many years without shopping.

Chris, I've been on the forum a lot longer than you but have no way made the progress you have. It does take time to change old habits. I just purged my closet of five huge bags of shoes. I'm a little too scared to count how many there are. And please do not make me count how many tank tops I own. We'll just leave it as I'm set for all tank top emergencies that may arise for a very long time. I still make mistakes but I think there are less. I chalk all the mistakes all up to a giant learning experience. And I'm so happy to have found YLF because it is wonderful to have such kind, smart, supportive friends to help us through those backward steps. And very therapeutic to read that we share similar struggles. :)

"I do believe you can spend less and get a better wardrobe by avoiding sales and just focusing on what you want but I've never actually done it."

Gah!! I laughed so hard I choked.

Also at Beth Ann's box of lipsticks. For me, it would probably be a shoe rack of chelsea boots. Talk about catnip!! Is there such a thing as too many pairs????

I can't avoid sales entirely but I have steeled myself to the process of returns. It's easy to do the mailed ones, of course -- nobody sees you. But I took some items back to the Bay today and I find the SA's are getting more and more used to it.

I've also come to accept that I'll make a couple of stupid purchases a year. I think of it as the price of "doing business" (i.e. evolving my style, building a wardrobe that works for a changing life/ body etc.)

I mean, some are considered experiments. Experiments sometimes work unexpectedly well and sometimes fall flatter than my brother's arches. But hey. You have to make them to evolve.

But one or two are just reflexive purchases (like your casual tees). And one or two might be crazy emotional purchases or retail therapy, pure and simple.

If I'm smart and lucky I get to return the mistakes, like you. Today I returned these two "retail therapy" purchases...sunglasses didn't fit, and watch didn't look good on me, I thought. Oh well. C'est la vie.

I think you'll get better at not making those reflexive purchases for "the old Chris" as soon as you get more used to being (and dressing as) "the new Chris"). In fact, the solution is probably more shopping....but only for the kind of items that will move your style in the direction you want it to go.

Beth Ann ...Wow, 17 lipsticks??? But who am I to judge...I have a similar number of very casual summer tops in short sleeves or sleeveless. Many of them I don't even care about enough to remember I have them! Moving on from the humor of it, you make a great point Beth Ann that a wardrobe that moves our style forward is even better than cute tops

Thanks Diane G. Your comment "onward" reminds of my something my dad used to say..."onward through the fog" :-)

BC yes, another obvious outfit. But not always one you like any better than any other or one you actually want to wear! That's another tricky one for me...combining things into nice outfits is great, but figuring out if and where you will actually wear them is another thing entirely.

Author Linda the one difference I have with you is that I have absolutely no problem returning stuff.(With too much practice I have become rather an expert). I have started chatting with SAs at places with great return policies (like Nordstrom) about how I seem to be returning so much and they totally get it and are sympathetic. Other stores where the staff is less cheerful about it I just say "they didn't look right with what I was hoping to wear it with". That's tough for them to argue with and pretty close to the truth in a general sense so I don't feel like I'm lying. Online shopping doesn't really deter me much. I too only shop at places with free shipping and returns. I might try a new place ONCE otherwise.

Thanks Summer and Sally!

Rachylou that's a pretty funny image...puffed sleeves all over your closet!

UmmLila so true.

Style Fan it's kind of comforting to me (and hopefully others) to hear about your brown addictions. I've done a similar thing with eyeshadow. .I think I'm buying a new one but it's really the same as a color I already have that's not used up yet.

Smart vs regular casual. I like that. My downfall is olive green or brown tops. I have a collection. I got all excited last night when Lululemon sent out their newsletter and there was an olive green T shirt. I am still debating what size to order. It is perfect. V neck, skims the body, nice length, etc. I only have 4 or 5 similar ones.
I had a make up addiction. I have managed to break that one. I had every shade of brown eyeshadow out there.

I do this ...I get something I like or suits me and I get several then buy more just in case I run out or they stop producing black tops or skinny jeans and I'm left without anything to wear. But I'm determined not to do it anymore as I've learnt that you only wear so much or the clothes may not fit you next season.

Oh, I will join this club! In the past, visiting stores in person was deadly to my budget. I like dso many things, and if I tried them on and they fit, I bought them. And OF COURSE my personal version of Hell includes having to take something back and confront a real person. "No, there's nothing wrong with it. I'm just a lower form of life with neither willpower nor backbone, and I changed my mind. Please don't hurt me."

Two things have salvaged my budget and my dignity: online shopping, and a spreadsheet on which I track wears, along with cost and other stuff. I found the spreadsheet on Vivenne's site. It's painful to see what I spend (I have vowed my husband will never see it...my money, yes, but he's squeamish), but valuable because I can see at a glance which things I never wear. Ouch.

Online shopping is great because I think more about purchases. Do I want it enough to order it just to find out if it will fit me? Cuts down on impulse. Is the color one I really want and know my wardrobe could use? Instead of "Oh look! Pretty color! I must try it on." In other words, online slows me down--which may be contrary to other shoppers' experiences. For me, it works. Also, I do limit temptation by shopping at fewer places: I only shop at places that have free shipping and returns, EXCEPT when the item is something I saw via a blogger and I decide it is a must-have. These items are rare, but I decide to take the "risk" of having to pay for the opportunity to find out if they are as perfect as I think they will be. (Usually they are.)

You're getting lots of good advice. Hope all these shared experiences help!

It's hard to resist tops because you think, "There's another easy outfit I can make." Put a top with a skirt or pants, and voila.

Oh yes -- "cute tops" are the Sirens of the shopping world. Lash me to a post and cover my eyes and ears, would you?

I used to collect lipsticks when slightly depressed or anxious about various elements of my life. One day, I walked downstairs to speak to my DH and displayed a box of 17 lipsticks. "I think it's time to move, " I said!

Now? I think I'm replacing the lipstick with tops.

But a wardrobe that moves our style forward is even better than cute tops. Wardrobe/style time is rather a creative hobby, too --- not at all like the "gotta find the perfect top" web crawling that we all fall into from time to time!

You're on your way! No worries about an occasional distracting setback!

Nishaa I get what you are saying about SALE talk. One has to be careful to not be swept along by the tide. I do believe you can spend less and get a better wardrobe by avoiding sales and just focusing on what you want but I've never actually done it.

RobinF yes that's exactly right. I have even bought things that were almost duplicates, but not on purpose. I recognize the pattern but have not yet broken it. :-)

kkards maybe I was not clear..my goal is to move to more smart casual pieces, or maybe polished casual is the right terminology. T-shirts, no matter how nice, don't fit this in my view. I also don't need any more summer clothes of any kind that I'm only going to wear only at home. Love seeing someone say "wicked good" on YLF...I have been tempted myself several times

smittie yes I think you are right if I stayed out of malls more the whole ugly cycle would stop repeating itself. Yes yes yes on not buying t-shirts or tanks and going with dressier pieces. I get it, I just need to DO it.

Jenn I "SO" get that story and the catnip reference. I am trying to stay completely out of H&M for that very reason, and also because I almost never find anything that fits. I also need to break the pattern of "it's only $15 for this little top, what's the harm?" The harm is in the time and mental energy to deal with the buyer's remorse and the return or letting it sit unworn in the closet.

bc that's good advice. I have looked an NYDJ tops that is the sort of thing I'm looking for now.

BrieN you lucky girl to have lived in Marblehead! Such a gorgeous place! Yes TJmaxx is like that, I find I shop there less and less although I still do sometimes find stuff there that meets what I want. I like your attitude, maybe this will be my next one step back two steps forward.

Oh my goodness Chris, I SO get this! I'm having a big chuckle.

Let's edit your comments to be me:

1) do not buy any more summer clothing that will be worn primarily at work. I have plenty,
and have an inventory spreadsheet to prove it. It's not a good use of
my time or $$, and it's a backward step on meeting my style goals.

2) when I do buy new things, make sure they fill a real wardrobe hole. These tops did NOT fit a wardrobe hole

One word change, one deletion.. I have more summer work tops than I can wear. Well, I can wear them all, once, in a season (okay so I'm exaggerating, but only a little). So what do I do yesterday? Was at a meeting in a town an hour away and wanted to check something out I'd discovered was sold in a boutique there. So I go in to ask. See "Eileen Fisher" on a few items. The sales lady tells me they have the largest collection in a store in CANADA!! I come out with a sleeveless linen top, and a sweater. That I can't return. But the sad thing is, I don't regret it, not one bit. I just need to move so I can wear this stuff.

Today I'm wearing another new sleeveless top. I have another with tags on.

Don't get me started on summer shoes.

I need the <FULL STOP> to seriously kick in. I just LOVE summer clothes!

Having lived in Marblehead for a few years I love and get that saying on several levels ;)

So. I hear you loud and clear. I have had to swear off TJ Maxx because I just kept coming home with random tops, not as nice quality as the ones you purchased, and I'm sure not as good a fit. I'd be all "it's pretty and I can wear it with jeans or jean shorts" without thinking about whether it had anything to do with how I actually wanted to look.

Maybe this is a one step back, two steps forward exercise for you? You seem to have clarified even further for yourself what you want.

I've had to buy some casual stuff due to my DH's diving addiction that makes him want to go to various places in Central America. He likes to go when it's warm so that the water won't be so cold, which makes it hot for me. Anyhoo, I managed to get some NYDJ sleeveless tops that will serve that purpose and also be suitable for other things besides vacations. I have purchased a few other tops this year, too, but most of them work for casual and work. I do have a couple, but not too many, tops that are strictly weekend casual, but that was a wardrobe hole I needed to fill. I had no tees whatsoever. I'm happy with the way my wardrobe has shaped up.

I totally, totally understand this.

I went into H&M yesterday to check out a straw tote I've had my eye on. This retail season is like catnip for me. The store is full of fun, cheap items in my favorite colors and in late summer/early fall stylings that work really well for the year-round layering required for Colorado weather. It's also a sea of cheap fabrication and low-quality materials, but I still found myself in the checkout line holding a $10 top to go with my straw bag. So much for "less stuff, better quality."

Luckily for me, the person in front of me was doing a huge return, which gave me enough to time to think over my purchase. I put the top back on the rack, bought the carefully-considered bag, and chalked it up as a victory. Had the cashier been any quicker, though, I would have been right there with you, dealing with buyer's remorse and annoyed at myself for having to make a return (or not returning, and having one more cheap item in my closet.)

I'm on a journey away from casual. The thing that is most helping me is to not buy knit t shirts or tank tops. I'm far happier with these dressier pieces.

Good idea to return the tshirts, Chris!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I see it in the store, I like it, don't really need it but at the price can't resist and then either don't wear it or don't wear something else I have that was just fine. My problem is I haven't yet figured out what direction I want to move into. Good job at recognizing this.
