I love the glass. I think it will be great!

And I'm laughing because I am such a planner that I would sooner cut off my right arm than begin demolition before everything is picked out and even ordered! LOL

All great thoughts! I like sparkle but nothing ornate - so no big decorative medallions or themes (like Southwest or Italian) that would dictate color or prevent me from changing it up with accessories. Basically, I want good bones for my kitchen and I need it to be functional, inviting and low maintenance. Something like rustic urban organic. :)

I think the glass tiles bring some modern/urban valua and a little bling, like the jewelry of the kitchen design, but the neutral color keeps it from being OTT... that's my hope, at least.

Have decided against accent tiles or a strong tile color - we can always use paint in a few wall areas to bring in more color. Everyone agrees the hickory cabinets are the focal point (statement piece?) so best to decorate around them.

Thank you all so much. If anyone else has inspiration pics or kitchens they want to show off, I'd love to see them!

I was going to suggest stainless or one of the recycled plastic products that mimic stainless as a way of ensuring that your kitchen doesn't feel too rustic. Its hard to visualize the small samples in a room.

I sympathize. In the next three weeks I have to select all the finishes for a new home. I have picked the flooring for most of it except the baths and mudroom. That only leaves cupboards, counters, lights, paint, exterior, etc. Ack

Mary, I TOTALLY agree and we've been debating that! Problem is we've already started demo. Floor should go in next week, lower cabinets the week after (assuming they get here intact!), then two weeks for granite to be templated and cut. Upper cabinets last because I stupidly wanted a "garage" for the bread. If backsplash not in before D-day, will not be disaster.

FULL ON PANIC ATTACK.

Lots of good advice, and GardenWeb is a great community for advice.

Check out Maria Killam's blog (she is an Angie client) for more helpful info. She has strong opinions, but presents good things to think about whether or not you agree.

-- watch the undertones in context with each other, especially the difficult Pinky Beige

After a little practice I can pick out green vs. purple undertones that do not go together well, or 'clean' vs. 'dirty' shades that clash.
"What Everyone should know about Beige!"

-- think carefully about using accent tiles

"Selecting your Kitchen or Bath Backsplash; Accent Tile or NOT?"

Honestly, Una, I would seriously consider putting off the project until the first of the year. These things ALWAYS ALWAYS take longer than expected, and I think at this point the chances of it being finished for the holidays is about zero. And these aren't the kinds of decisions you want to make in a hurry.

Missvee's suggestion to choose the tiles as a final step is good advice. But, like you, I had a bit of a time crunch so I grabbed a cabinet door, one of my 12x12 floor tiles, and a bunch of sample boards from my tile place and headed off to the warehouse where the granite guys kept all their big slabs. The granite tends to make a big statement so seeing my cabinet door and flooring next to a big slab instead of the small granite sample made it much clearer which tiles I worked best. Although I loved the glass and stainless tiles in the tile shop, I eliminated them quite quickly once I saw them next to the granite slab. My eye just kept coming back to the matte, bone subway tiles because they pulled everything together instead of making another statement. My tile guy suggested putting in an accent row of the glass tiles if I really wanted them, but, in the end, I went with keeping the focus on the granite and the wood.

I think kitchen design is not that different than putting together an outfit. Wood cabinets, wood flooring, and granite all are patterns so you want them to play nicely with each other. The finishes on granite, fixtures, and appliances add shine and sparkle, so figure out how much of a magpie you are. Do you like ALGO (mixing colors, textures, and patterns) or do you prefer a more modern, minimal look? Do you like everything smooth and polished, or do you gravitate to a more textured, RATE look? How much will be on daily display on your counters and cabinets (those items count as more pattern, shine, color)? And, finally, it's easy to fall in love with a gorgeous tile, or fun idea, (or orange moto?), but, ultimately, pay attention to that small voice trying to tell you something might be a impulsive infatuation and what you really are looking for is a long term relationship. While it's easy to get caught up in the eye candy, it's probably wise to realize that neutrals (wardrobe essentials?) can be what pulls things together.

missvee, I saw the stainless steel tiles! They are fab. Our appliances are all stainless too. Our counter person recommended against them for some reason - I was sick when I discussed it with her so I can't remember why, maybe that they can tarnish? Will ask her again. Think you are right about wait and see, just wish we'd timed this better so we weren't in a crunch for the holidays!

I wouldn't panic on the backsplash tiles. Our kitchen designer/installer told us not to pick them out until the rest of the kitchen was in, and painted. his rationale was that the backsplash is the final touch, and it would be better to wait until we could see them in the setting. That approach worked out fine for us. Just a thought though, if you want something modern and neutral, what about the small tiles that look like stainless steel? They are very smart, easy to clean, and tie in with any colour.

There is! Try Garden Web -- when we remodeled our bathroom I copied the whole design from a bathroom I found on their forum! Here's their kitchen forum: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath/

(Just for fun, here's the thread with the bathroom I copied and the two copycats. Mine is the last one: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forum.....76.html?24.)

Oh, and the Lowe's site is down so I can't see your tile.

I've gone into full on kitchen panic worrying that our granite, cabinet and floor will not work together. Never mind that we're trying to get the whole danged thing in by December 21st. I've spent the entire day at every store in town looking at sinks, tile, light fixtures, appliances and blacksplash ideas. Since the hickory is such a statement wood (and I don't want it to look uber-rustic), I'm thinking of doing something modern and neutral for the backsplash.... what do we think of these?

http://www.lowes.com/ProductDi.....&cId=

The review says they have a slight greenish cast which is okay since our granite is green...

Why didn't I hire a designer? Is there a YLF for kitchens?
