Surprisingly, I find I am being drawn to the sleeker, more tailored elements such as the jackets and trousers shown in Angie's pictures. I think I could do a diluted version of this, but I'll definitely be avoiding fringing, beading and peasant tops.

Certain aspects of 70s fashion appeals to me. Certainly not the boho, or peasant stuff. I will approach with caution--I did live through it, but I was much skinnier then. Oh, and younger as well. I could do one of those pantsuits, but in a subdued color, and good fabric. And nothing like the pastel colored polyester pantsuits my Mom and her friends wore. It was so hard to be an older woman then. One positive is that I have a lot more money these days. I do welcome the return of the boot cuts.

Ah, Suz, you may just need to stumble across the right butt vest for you. It could appear when you're not looking and have practically forgotten about it--isn't that the way things usually go?
I suspect the outfit I proposed is a little style-confused anyway. You could just wear the poet's tunic and vest, as pictured (ha ha!)-- and have people wondering whether you forgot your pants. (I'm just kidding, of course.)

thanks for sharing this! I'm a total 70s sucker and I loved everything, tho I also agree with rachylou that the literal styling gets a bit costume-y. Like others I also loved the daisy-print shirt with vest. And Angie's pics show the best of what 70s silhouettes can do... the long lines created by high belted waists and flared legs...

For some reason this made me think of that scene in Jackie Brown when she tries on the suit. While not quite as flared, to my eyes it looked so "freshly 70s": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzatMfqIf3A

Hmmm... I'm thinking some of the more classic/ tailored items. Trousers , slight Bootcut, vests. Some if these are more figure- and/ or footwear friendly than the skinny and ankle trend and I don't have much weather issues with long pants. May still have trouble looking intentional , though!

I wore trousers with the big belts, usually low on the hip, back then. It's hard to get the proportions right if you are short and can't wear heels.

Tanya, those scarves are small silk squares folded on the diagonal and tied in the back or folded a couple of times more with the corners inside the fold, and tied in the back or ends brought to the front and tied under the band. A bandana works for a casual version, especially if washed until it is soft, not stiff. Back then scarves were either small bandana-sized squares or narrow rectangles much shorter than today's with diagonal ends. Those could be wrapped around the neck too. You still see these at thrift stores sometimes.
I wonder if scarf styles will change to reflect the 70's.

Angies pins are great. (The "twiggy" haircut is definitely more like 1965.). I would definitely wear any of those outfits because they are polished, unlke the late sixties early 70's that they draw their inspiration from.

Heh. Sharan, remember my fate with the skirted legging? I don't think I will be wearing a vest with a butt vest any time soon! :)

Also love Angie's pins and can do those...as long as I can erase the image of my mother and her friends in the downmarket crimplene versions of those suits. I think I sewed one for myself in grade school....

I love Angie's pins more than boho versions at the moment because it was my style until lately & I'm tired of it, but I do love the rock 70s music, not so much the disco (not saying Angie's pins are disco) & I guess the 70s rockers were more boho, like the Rolling Stones & their girlfriends & Gram Parsons. I still have some fringe moccasins & a bag. Even if I don't want to use them right now I will hold onto them. I Also have Frye Campus boots but they are big on my skinny calves. Better try Angie's knee high sock suggestion. My musical taste has been a huge influence on my style but lately I don't go to see bands. All I do is work & sleep so I buy clothes for work mostly. I'm shopping for my lifestyle

A lot of it is pretty but I can't see myself wearing much of it. I prefer the pieces Angie posted further down but it's still a stretch for me. Part of it is fit - voluminous bottoms are hard for a peitite. The other issue is color - earthtones aren't really my favorite. But I'm excited to see everyone's interpretations.

Back in '79, my mom made me a pair of black chino slim-legged pants, matching vest, and a few long-sleeved tie-neck blouses. I wore that outfit (switching up the blouses, of course) with a pair of black strappy high-heeled sandals that had shiny gold metal trim on the heels.

Hmm, I'm with Rachylou in not feeling the styling so much--but the items themselves could be interesting. This time around, I think I'll forego fringe, headbands, peace signs, tie-dye, tall moccasin-style boots, macrame vests, cutesy prints, boho caftans with beads, suede halter, and floppy leather hats. But the thought of a brown suede jacket does sound appealing, especially paired with bootcut pant. Small doses for the second time around for me, but a smile when I see the full regalia on someone younger having as much fun with this look as I did.

ETA: Now those looks that Angie just pinned are a totally different story--I'd have called them the sleeker, modern side of the 70s instead of Glam, which had more of a disco vibe, in my recollections. Angie's pins were my seventies look--and I'd feel right at home wearing any of those outfits.

My only pause comes from remembering how some of my mother's friends looked when they chose to emulate us in wearing these outfits... I can remember being baffled at their wanting to give up their sophisticated, elegant dresses and suits to look like us, when we yearned to look as adult and confident as they did in their outfits.

To be clear, it's the GLAM side of the '70s (not boho chic) I like for my own style. Like this - minus the fringe:

I agree that it is fresh looking, but I don't think I want to do a full on copy of the 70's styles. I want a watered down, version pepped up with a good dose of now. I lived through the 70's once! Never had full on boho, but definitely penny collars (remember those!!?). And I remember a patchwork suede waistcoat...cringe!
