Irina, you know, you might be onto something with the weather. The weather for our entire stay in Europe lingered in the mid 60s (16-18C), which was PERFECT for me. I love being able to be out moving around without feeling overheated. The day after we got home, the high in LA was 87 (30C) and I'm just not ready to deal with that.

Carol, I actually brought just two necklaces on my trip, along with an an armful of bracelets (which I wore everyday) and that was great, but I did find myself staring longingly at a chunkier pendant I saw on a woman a few tables down from us at a restaurant. :)

JenniNZ, I think it absolutely relates to what I wrote in that thread! I really think I overbalanced with too many statement pieces and I'm currently not feeling keen on just wearing them all together. Come to think of it, though, I was looking into a closet devoid of most of my essentials, since they were being laundered. Maybe I was missing that practical element.

Perhaps what I can do is start rotating through my statement pieces. I found it fun to have only the three real statements (in Finds) with me in my travel capsule and liked the way I could use them judiciously to change things up. Choosing different statements to "feature" for a period of time could evoke that feeling of settling into my clothes and using them to their full range of possibilities.

I think I'm in the middle. Also just got back from a 3.5 week trip in Italy. As usual, I took only a carry on but packed a tote so I could shop while I was away. I love the clothes I took, I love the pieces I got to purchase while I was there, and while I was unpacking I did a thorough seasonal reorg of the closet to reintegrate everything from the trip with all the great things that stayed home.

Maybe worth thinking about why you're not excited about your stay-at-home clothes or if there's a new way you could think about integrating them with the capsule you came to love. The feeling you describe is one of the reasons I stopped tracking wears.

I guess it also depends on the weather. We mostly travel in October to celebrate my DH birthday in the new and warmer places (also we like to wait until the high season is over). When I come home after a trip, I feel sad to pack away summery clothes. I will not see it for another 6 months. I don’t know how I would feel if I have to put in rotation the same clothes.

I’m glad to get back to more options because I have trouble getting my travel capsule as mix& match as needed, plus I struggle with having wildly different activities in one day without being able to change clothes— often not going back to motel, or dress one way and family suggests an outing.

BUT I do think travel capsule limitations are excellent for sparking a fresh view of wardrobe— what worked, what didn’t, why. Why are somd of my wardrobe useful or comfortable for travel & some not. Do I have an item that would be perfect for travel but is the wrong color for the other items ? If I need a new travel item can it also be part of regular wardrobe? Do I have to many other clothes that I’m not wearing because I didn’t buy the right ones — colors, comfort- Or because I am more minimalist?

Part of the arrested development in pandemic has been that I did not do the travel adventures I had expected, and hence did not get to test out and refine certain types of travel capsules.

I am with Roberta, LaPed and others. After a trip I am ready to burn the clothes I brought or at least not wear them for a few months—even if they were old favorites. Maybe it’s because I prefer to pack lightly? DD on the other hand is a heavy packer because she wants to have *options* on her trips.

33 items, including shoes and jewelry, for 3 months at a time. What gets me is that the woman who invented it uses only 2 or so necklaces, and 2 or so earrings at a time! I would have so much trouble.

I like what Peri says above. I don’t think I have your experience, because I like a lot of choices available overall, but then paradoxically I will wear certain pieces over and over especially in winter where warmth and comfort come to the fore.
I think for you it might partly relate to your earlier thread where you had more new purchases than usual so were struggling to get the wears up on them? Might that still be overwhelming you?

I'm curious about the time factor. How long will this hold true?

A month from now will you be more interested in the other clothes and more tired of the trip ones? If the trip had been 2 months or more, at what point would you have started to tire of the clothes you had with you?

Keep us posted!

I think in fairness, I should add:

In times of high stress in my life, I do tend to rely on FFB outfits and combos and that might mean I want or appreciate a smaller capsule for a period of time. So that might apply to your situation -- given all you have been dealing with -- both before the trip and during!

My trips can be complicated to pack for (too many conflicting roles and goals and/or climates) so I'm often feeling like I'm missing things as I travel. Getting home to the things I've missed lets me breathe again.

Like Suz, by the end of a trip, I am usually *so ready* to have access to all of my options again. Granted, most of my longer trips are backpacking trips and involve wearing literally the same thing every day.

No, no, no. Whenever I come back from a trip of any length, I am thrilled and relieved to see the rest of my wardrobe!

I guess that explains why -- much as I admire smaller wardrobes -- and much as I lived with one (an admittedly not very cohesive or thought out one) for 2 decades or more -- I can't really see myself going back to a small wardrobe any time soon. I need a moderate sized closet.

Have you ever come back from vacation or a period of living with a reduced wardrobe, looked at your full closet, and thought “meh”?

I just lived out of a carry-on suitcase with a 20-piece capsule wardrobe for a month and, on arriving back, I didn’t have the excited feeling I thought I would seeing my whole wardrobe again. It just seemed like a lot of work trying to wear all those different clothes.

Don’t get me wrong, there are certain pieces I’m glad to see again, but I think I may have strayed too far in the direction of variety recently, when I’m really happiest with way fewer pieces.
