The typhoon was definitely affecting the weather pattern - there were floods and landslides on the east side of the island, and in Taipei it rained every day we were there. I had packed for 80+ deg F and high humidity, and instead got rain and 65-70 deg F, so my packing could have been a little better, but it wasn't a disaster thanks to layering.

I pretty much had a uniform of pencil skirt with pumps or black trousers with flats on the bottom, colorful shell + washable silk blouse + scarf on top. I wound up wearing the one wool scarf I took almost every day, and leaving the lighter silk/chiffon scarves unworn.

Most useful purchase: NT$35 (~ US$1) rain coat from 7-11 - I looked like I was wearing a plastic bag, but so did everybody else, and it kept me relatively dry.

It was clear that for the locals it was quite cold, as I saw a lot of wool scarves and winter coats (with fur, even) on the street.

Katja, I also have a son living in Asia (Tokyo). Lucky you to be able to visit. Your street fashion report was so interesting. Did you end up packing the right clothing for your trip?

Great report, Katja! It sounds like you had a great trip and a good visit with your son. I was wondering about you when I heard the news about the typhoon in Taiwan. It looks like it did not really affect the areas you were visiting?

I feel creepy and stalkerish when I take "street style" photos so I rarely take them purposely. Often, I'll be taking a picture of something else - a monument, a street scene etc and there are people milling around so you get a sense of the street style. There have been times when I have seen someone wear something absolutely fabulous and I wish I could take a photo but I would be too embarrassed to stop and ask them.

I would ask permission as Louise suggested. I'm very privacy-conscious myself and would be (and have been) bothered by a stranger taking my photo. And even if the person gave me permission, I would still blur his/her face if I posted the photos somewhere. Heck, I even worry about catching other kids in the background when I take photos of my kids at events! I know that's probably taking it a bit far. But it's just a creepy concept to me.

Edited to add: I don't mean it's creepy to want to take street style photos. It's just creepy to think about a stranger having a photo of me, my kids, etc.

I can't access your blog post. I have never taken photos of people I don't know before. I guess if you are far enough away you could do it without asking but I supose for a closer shot a compliment for their outfit and ask if they would mind if you photo it for inspiration? x

I'm glad you had such a good time! Thanks for the report back on the street fashion!

I have never felt comfortable taking pictures of people in public, unless they are children in foreign countries (often without adults around). Which may be even creepier/ruder than taking pictures of adults... But they're so cute, speak a different language, and think cameras are cool!

Hi, everybody, I'm back!

The trip was fun - it was great to see our adult son functioning in such a different culture, and especially great because he did the talking and brought us food.

I have lots of pictures (most of which you can see on my trip posts at http://journal.brokenclay.org), but no pictures of street style, for two reasons:

It rained every day. Every day! So there was no comfortable way to settle down somewhere and actually take pictures of people.

It felt rude to try to take people's pictures, which brings up the questions:

How do you go about taking pictures of people in public? Do you ask their permission? What's the etiquette of this sort of thing?

The subway (which we rode every day) was the best place to study what people were wearing. The trends I saw on young women:

skinny jeans/leggings - everywhere! So much so that I really noticed when I saw a couple of people wearing boot-cut jeans

boots

bubble hems (is that what they're called? When the hem is drawn up?)

ruched and asymmetric long tops

short layered over long - tunics with cropped jackets especially

sparkles/sequins - sparkly camisole with skinny jeans, hard-edged jacket and boots, for example

On older women, I tended to notice more of what I'll call an Asian aesthetic - more old-fashioned silhouettes but with bright patterns/colors/sparkles.

When the shoes weren't boots, they were cute flats, bulky athletic shoes a la American tourists, or very trendy fashion trainers (leather, with bright colors or metal tones).

Eyeglasses were bold, dark, wide temple pieces with sparkles. An interesting theme was men wearing eyeglasses with white, yellow or pink frames.
