Jjsloane - you are lucky to have traveled in Ireland. We did make a day trip to Killarney but instead of kissing the Blarney stone we kept going to Muckross House, which Ornella had recommended, and spent a lovely day there. On the way to Killarney we saw Inch Beach. Glad you saw Dingle -- it's just about perfect in size, so walkable, and the pubs and shops are great. Since we had a house out on Slea Head for a week, we ate most of our evening meals in Dingle Town. And the music!!! It's heavenly.

Ciet - you MUST go to Ireland! You will love it and your Poppa will be thrilled. Did you hear lots of stories or not? Some people who left Ireland had such a tough time over there that they just would rather not talk about it. Either way, you will resonate with the land and with the people.

rae - I know what you mean about the landscapes making your heart ache. I had some awareness when I was taking these pictures that what I was seeing was special, but it wasn't until I transferred them to my laptop at home that I really saw what I had been photographing. Many of them could be a post card...that being said, I chose not to post any of my photos of the sectarian neighborhoods of Belfast as they could be quite divisive. They do reflect Ireland's past but hopefully not the future.

Sveta - thanks for your kind words, they mean so much to me. I loved wearing my green coat and felt it really fit in with Ireland; however, in Dublin and Belfast you mostly saw dark colors -- black, brown, deep wine -- typical of large cities. Everyone was dressed pretty casually, though we went to the theatre in both cities (the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, the Grand Opera in Belfast) and attire at these performances was definitely stepped up. I wore my dark navy blazer with black slacks for these occasions and felt comfortable for these evening events.

celia - yes, the Gap sweater came in handy when the cold wind was blowing! Glad you noticed my handsome husband -- at home he is usually more formally dressed than I am (after 22 years as a naval officer) so casual travel wardrobes are a challenge for him. Here in Seattle he'll wear a cap like he's wearing in these pictures all around town. Always smartly dressed and takes very good care of his clothes -- better than I do, I'm afraid!

shevia - thanks for your comments...I am hoping our pictures on the restaurant's website (when it debuts) doesn't hamper their business! Actually they seemed to be doing quite well without an internet presence but I suppose eventually all eating establishments must have a site.

anne - you MUST go to Ireland! It is amazing, as you can see. Everyone's experience of a new country is unique and your story will be your own. I really am hoping you can get there while the desire is keen in your heart.

Jenava - I read your comments and resonated with them so much. Ireland is indeed a complex country -- just think about the fact that there are two Irelands and the why and how that came about. Add in the potato famine and the loss of so many wonderful, hard-working people to emigration...well there is a lot to ponder. The Irish seem to be keeping these memories of their past alive via music, poetry, monuments, etc. When you go the museums there are huge gaps of time when nothing is exhibited, as the people were focused simply on survival. Still, one should not let this sadness be so off-putting that it keeps you at a distance. The contemporary music, art and fashion scenes are vibrant and vital; there are thousands of young people in Dublin and other cities that are happy and loving their lives. We experienced a lot of joy in Ireland even as we were visiting places like Kilmainham Gaol, where we learned of the suffering, heroism and tragic events of the past. I say "Go".

Ireland always makes me sad deep down. I've never been (my sister spend quite a bit of time in Dublin as well as in Northern Ireland), but I've read quite a bit about the famine and it just, well, makes me soooo sad. It's one of only a few countries whose population is still lower than it was in the 1700's.

But, you look amaaaazing, and the photos are gorgeous! Your last little adventure - so fab, you lucky lady!

What lovely photos and a great trip report. I want to go to Ireland after reading it too! That restaurent experience was memorable!! I am glad that your travel capsule worked well. As someone (Suz?) said on someone else's travel capsule (who had the blue coat?) it seems a bright coat can really enhance the small set of clothes.
MaryK - glad you enjoyed the photos. Now about the other 870....

Anna - you were right about the Causeway, it't a trip! So many other mindblowing perspectives there but verrrry windy.

Caro - you're welcome, I enjoyed taking them so much and it's a real treat that others like them as well.

rachylou - isn't that green coat something? Never thought I would own a duffel coat but it really worked well, especially the length -- kept my fanny soooo warm!

Gaylene - I hear Ireland is gorgeous in the springtime!!! Thanks for the compliment on the photos. Honestly, Ireland is so pretty that it would be hard to take a bad photo! I left out most of my scenic photos of the western cliffs and Atlantic where we rented that stone house for a week. Unbelievably beautiful.

suz - glad you like the green coat! I got a great end-of-season deal from Lands End and it earned every penny from all the wear I got out of it. #23 was taken in Dingle town, which is so colorful and picturesque...almost makes you wonder if you're in Disneyland or something, just beautiful. The amazing geological formation in #17 is Giant's Causeway which is on the Antrim Coast. It's an UNESCO site, the only one in Ireland I believe. Google it and prepare to drop your jaw!
hedgiehog - you will have a fantastic time in Ireland. I did not know of any relatives still living in Ireland, but the Titanic Belfast attraction really helped me visualize what it might have been like for my ancestors -- linen weavers. The whole experience almost seems surreal now.

Ornella - you are spot on about Trinity in #1 & 2. Belfast Castle is #7 and the stepping stones are at Muckross House, right after exiting the tour. Thank you so much for your recommendations...I believe this was one of yours (Muckross) and though a number of areas were closed due to off-season, we enjoyed it immensely. If you do get to Nenagh, the Peppermill is the fancier venue; Pepe's is what they call a family style restaurant. Both excellent!

Sheila, I was so excited to read your post! What stunning photos. Thanks so much for sharing them. You certainly had a stroke of good fortune running into that chef. What a great story that is.
It looks like you packed really well and were very well organised. We are heading to London in June with a side trip to Newcastle, via Belfast.

My hubby's immediate family live in England but his parents emigrated from Northern Ireland in 1962 so we are going over to meet the rest of the family. My two DDs and I have never met some of the aunts, uncles and many cousins.

Thanks again for sharing your story and lovely photos. :)

I am still recovering from our 17-day, self-directed vacation in Ireland. We traveled with another couple and visited three main areas: Dublin, Belfast, and the Dingle Peninsula. It was wonderful! The weather was quite brisk and breezy but I was prepared for it (thanks to all the great advice from YLF friends) and I really loved it. The Irish people we met were amazingly friendly and helpful -- everyone expresses their politics right up front, so we just nodded our heads when appropriate and engaged in conversation when it seemed right to do so.

One thing I did wrong was to start growing out my hair before this trip...I should have at least had it trimmed because it was a hot mess during this entire trip -- blowing this-away and that-away. Oh well. Forever etched in pictures!

After soliciting your advice about what to pack, I did pretty well, I think, and was able to get everything into a normal-sized carryon bag (which we checked), as I had also stuffed my messenger bag and much-smaller cross body purse with essentials I could not live without during the long transatlantic flights. Of course I wore the heaviest/bulkiest clothes to conserve space in my suitcase.

I took:

- outerwear: a warm woolen kelly green duffel coat and a lighter ponte knit navy blazer
- jeans, black & navy pants
- a V-neck cashmere sweater and the "infamous" Gap cable-knit sweater
- 4 tops: one Breton striped, 3 solid
- a blue chambray shirt
- black oxfords & black suede fleece-lined boots
- lingerie, sleepwear, Uniqlo tanks, gloves, etc.
- bought 2 Irish woolen mufflers and wore them a lot for the warmth

For the (mostly) casual nature of our sightseeing, these items worked very well. I am posting a lot of photos and you'll see that I wore the wool coat most of the time. For the sake of time I am not providing captions for each photo, but if you're curious about anything, just ask and I'll elaborate. I took over 900 photos so these are just a few of the many amazing sights we saw: Trinity College/Book of Kells, Christ Church Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Kilmainham Gaol, Belfast Castle, Old Bushmill's Distillery, Giant's Causeway, Titanic Belfast, Muckross House. And of course, lots of pubs, museums, window-shopping, seafood chowder and sticky toffee pudding, always some incredible, fantastic Irish music! I also spent the better part of a day researching my ancestors at PRONI in Belfast...wonderful people there, very helpful.

One of the most memorable events on our trip was unplanned. On our last day we were driving back from Dingle to Belfast for the flight home and hopped off the freeway for lunch in the small town of Nenagh. We could not find a single place to eat that was open, as we had waited too long for lunch service. In desperation, we found a parking place and got out to feed the meter, hoping to forage about for food. There was a nice-looking man coming down the street toward me and I stopped to ask him if he could recommend a place for lunch. "Just a minute," he said, "I might have something for you." So we waited a minute while he walked about 50 feet down the street; then he came back smiling and said, "Follow me!" Of course we were intrigued and we followed. What ensued was something out of Fantasyland! This nice man and his wife (the chef) own two of the finer restaurants in Nenagh and they were having one of them photographed for their website. Though the restaurant was closed, they invited us to order anything we want from their menu, as long as they could photograph us eating it! Wines, appetizers, mains, fabulous desserts -- nothing was off limit! We left there with full tummies and a wonderful impression of true Irish hospitality. Oh, the names of their restaurants are: The Peppermill and Pepe's. I cannot say enough good things about them. The last picture #32 is this wonderful couple (a goofy one of me but I'm not proud...). If you are still reading this, you are a trooper! Make your next trip a trip to Ireland; it is a magical place.

Enjoy!
