Congrats! Today, I made my nearly weekly *returns trip* to Nordstrom. I ordered the same polka dot skirt in three sizes knowing I would have to return at least two. I also have no problem returning items that don't play well with the rest of my wardrobe. Then there are the items that are a departure from the rest of my wardrobe: A regular pullover (jumper) and a mesh one; I currently own NO pullovers at all. So would I really wear these things? I will think long and hard, and am grateful that Nordies doesn't have a deadline since it is still too cool for me to wear a full mesh sweater since I run cold.
This is such great news, Rambling Ann. It's quite liberating to take back stuff that doesn't work for us. It can be difficult the first few times. I felt this as well. But now I am a pro at it!

Thanks, I was pretty sure I wasn't the only one. I have been reflecting on how I was taught to shop by mom, who has great taste, but diametrically opposed to my own. She never returned anything. Maybe she does now, I'll have to ask her.

Welcome, and it sounds like you already have an awesome plan! Yep, it took me a while to get used to the way returns function in US as in Europe they are pretty rare, but I sure am glad I did!

Sounds like a great plan! Take a deep breath: returns are OK, lol. It took me a while to get over the 'maybe I shouldn't return, just because item doesn't fit or I changed my mind or it won't really go with the rest of my wardrobe, etc etc'. Especially that I come from Europe where returns are frowned upon and really not a norm.

Good for you! I am a complete, total, utterly shameless returner. And you know what? I never get any guff from sales people about it. I am my UPS guy's personal full employment act. I buy and if I don't like, I return. However, I use my best returning manners: I'm always polite. I try to always have my receipts. I don't return items that I've worn (unless they are defective). And I'm aware of their return rules, like their return timelines. Returns are fabulous. They help you find the right thing and being able to make returns easily lets you take chances on things that you wouldn't otherwise take. Some of those stick, so it is money in the merchant's pocket. Many happy returns, RA!

Oh my, we should chat. I also believed that people didn't return things and allowed my closet to fill with things that didn't fit and didn't work. Imagine my surprise when I found YLF and there were all kinds of posts about returning items!!!! It was a whole new world!!

Needless to say, I have gotten over myself and now return items ruthlessly and without shame. It's a great feeling! ;)

Good for you!

Returns can fill one with trepidation. But yes indeed, it's expected and the retailers have developed ways to take care of returned goods. Like I do believe The Rack sells things that Nordstrom can't put back out on the floor.
Before today, I had never returned an item of clothing for poor fit. Sent those too small belts back to Nordstrom in less than 24 hours, thanks to YLFers modeling good shopping behavior. Honestly, I had no idea real people did that. Regularly, apparently, and the retailers expect it. Whoa.

I have only been a member for 3 weeks and already you guys are making a difference. Since then I've inventoried the closet, made a plan and a shopping list, had a long-overdue haircut, refreshed a couple of basics, found three jackets to form the core of my style direction and bit of retro costume jewelry.

In a couple of months I'll be able to shop for shoes (I found YFL right after foot surgery) and have a few WIW to share. For now, it's probably good that I can't shop too much, as my style ideas get more refined reading every new post. Great stuff, thanks!
