Moms tend to get drowned in adorable newborn-3 month stuff, but 9+ month and on can be more useful later on. I like giving books as well (board books are good, and my nieces like the "fabric" paper books that stand up to being chewed on), and occasionally a blankie. Me and two of my brothers were blankie kids. If she's got a registry, some of the items may be available at Babies 'R' Us or Buy Buy Baby.
