I saw some at a lake in Kansas that winter a few years ago. The poor things were starving as they did not know how to get food in a strange place. I hope you see some in Barrow.

Joy, we haven’t seen any, ever! A few years ago there were a lot in the lower 48. We were in the northernmost state without one. It’s likely we’ll see them in Barrow. Fingers crossed, anyway.

OH, no! Poor owl family. Have you seen snowy owls this year? There were sitings near us.

I’ve seen Canada geese nesting in trees. I thought that was odd, too.

JAileen - there is no vegetation or water nearby (that I could see) and if the weather turns hot it will be really difficult for them. Folks seem to be enjoying the novelty and given the nature of the store, are treating the pair with respect. If the male gets aggressive, I imagine the MNR will get a call to come scoop them up. Geese can be a bit of a problem down here. There are too many.

Carla, isn’t that funny that the mother picked a spot we would think is so obviously inappropriate?!

JAileen, photo below taken by DH. (Forester and Wildlife Biologist - did his BA paper and MA work on birds and is always on the lookout). Female hunkered down over eggs on a tiny meridian in the parking lot of a massive Sail store (like a MEC) surrounded by big box stores, roads, and highways. The male was about 30 feet away sitting in the middle of the parking lot and if anyone approached the female, he stood up and started to move forward!

DH said she was definitely on eggs. She had pulled out the feathers of her brood patch and was sitting on a mound of her own down.

Apparently the parents will care for it. It’s in an area where there are no dogs, but there could be coyotes. I hope it climbs one of the trees in the courtyard right away.

Dang- a mother can’t turn her back on a kid for a second without it getting into trouble.. glad it’s ok They are such cute puff balls.
We are enjoying our own raptors- we have several hawks’ nests in our area so our walks are fun.
Thanks for the wonderful update on the owl family

Cute videos. I think the parents will take care of the fledging on the ground. Or does he have to be placed back in the ledge? Or does USFWS need to be informed?
That’s a busy baby bird season and ledge...
