I think you are really getting a handle on your style from your WIWs. To me what makes the difference with certain brands is hair, footwear, and accessories. You can edge up or frump down based on those items. It is hard when you're a working MOTG, especially with shoes, but the other option is comfy shoes and edgier clothes, which is equally hard to do. :)

No special ideas on clothing lines, but just want to echo you are SO stylin'!

Of course you are interested in understanding what might be dated and so on, but excellent fit is kind of the foundation of non-frumpiness, to me. And you are making so many excellent choices in classic cuts that are flattering and fit so well, and in good colors for you. It is also important not to have to spend hours and hours per item, so having some "go to" brands is important. I've been returning lots of items too as a result of trying new makers, because I have no idea how the sizing will turn out even after reviewing the size charts.

Maybe you are asking in part where to go for adding even more updated style if you aren't finding enough wow among the more classic pieces. That's something I have trouble with since I just have not had the time or patience to comb through thousands of tops, say, to find that great piece that rings all the right bells, fits, and is at the right price point, yet I'm not really happy with the more limited selections I've gone through. I'm finally recognizing that there are these really cool items out there that I like more than what I've been purchasing in the past, but it involves accessing scores of retailers, websites, sheesh! And I'm not "stalking" and getting the best deals, either. A dilemma!

Anyway, you are looking fab, and so something you are doing is working very well.

I love the items you have been putting together, and the fit is so great, especially on some of your print dresses--so I dont think you are veering towards frumpalicious at all!
I second the others: Michael Michael Kors, Jones New York and I.N.C. all seem to have interesting clothing that fits me--I am in that in-between no mans land for sizing. I feel like somwhere you may have said Lands End petites was a no-go for you?

I also second Angie for Dobbin, I ordered their classic best seller dress & the fit & material is gorgeous! I need to post a pic & review here soon

I see many of RL items that are stylish, and I do think with color and proportion anything can be styled to seem stylish. Some of their offerings are a bit more classic or traditional, but there is always a way to spice things up!

Psst: I love Talbot's. I just don't fit any of their clothes. I think there are items in their lines as well as Ralph Lauren that are more trendy too - like the other ladies are saying, it depends on how you mix em up, and don't give up on the other brands!

I have about a 90% return rate too, and they sell things in my size! Some of these clothes are just cut really weird! It's the clothes, it's not you!

Thistle, both of those brands fit my body the best, no matter what size I am. I have been purchasing their items for 15 years or so. Try Talbot's shoes. They carry many flats in narrow medium and wide widths. Halogen from Nordies also fit me well. We must have similar proportions.

I agree with Angie - don't sell yourself short. You are looking very stylish because you are buying clothes that fit (& suit) your body & your personality well. I've loved watching your style blossom here

I have a RL dress that I really like a lot. I don't think it is frumpy in the least. It's classic and very mixable.

And you are not frumpy, either.

I take Donna's point that certain shoes and accessories might be tricky when it comes to MOTG wear. At least with a toddler, you probably don't want teetering heels or necklaces that can be grabbed at. But I don't think all shoes and accessories fall into that category. Your leopard flats are pretty kid-friendly! And in general, it can be a great way to go to inject a little modernity and pizzazz if you are tough to fit and have limited shopping options.

But I do think you are onto something. For all of us, it's a question of finding those companies who seem to cut with our bodies in mind. Which can be harder than lots of people might imagine. Through a process of trial and error, you have discovered a few. I think you also do really well with Classiques Entier, right?

I have a couple of RL items that I really enjoy and don't see them as frumpy at all but classic. And long lasting. Same goes for Talbots - I don't always love the prints (but I'm not really a lover of wearing prints on myself) but I love many of their basics like elbow sleeve knit tops. I can't wear Talbots pants though - they just never fit me right. I agree to try Caslon and MK.

That's fantastic, Thistle! And you are doing sartorially SO WELL - I don't want you to sell yourself short. I love looking at your outfits and traveling with you on your style journey.

I have a handful of clients who absolutely LOVE Ralph Lauren and Talbots too. You are in good company! Those clients also do well with Lafayette, Facconable (when they existed), Eilleen Fisher, Foxcroft and sometimes Chicos. You should try Dobbin Clothing too xo

How about MICHAEL by Michael Kors and maybe Halogen and Caslon, Nordies' in house brands? My blouse from Sandra Ingrish and shirt from Foxcroft (both found at Nordstrom) fit well at the shoulders and don't gap me, but something about Foxcroft shirts reads rather frumpy to me. Maybe it's that they are cut pretty big at the waist (and I'm not) or it's the prints they use. I guess MK is the closest to trendy of the lot, but the stuff seems pretty classic to me. :(

I have the sense that the things that work for you also work for me as long as they come in Petite. I don't think one would necessarily conclude that by looking at us since I'm not nearly as curvy as you. Maybe our shoulder to bustline ratio is similar? Shirts that fit me in the shoulder, bustline, and arms are always too big in the waist and somewhat too big in the hips. How about you?

I'm thinking that it may be difficult for you to focus on accessories and shoes while DD is young due to the fuss and chase factor, but it wouldn't hurt to try!

I found another brand that "gets" me - Lauren Ralph Lauren. This brand and Talbots both seem to be cut for my shape. I can buy my size in either brand and it almost always fits and is more a question of do I like it and does it fit my style goals.

I have found so few other brands that fit at all. I must have close to a 90% return rate (waiting for Nordie's to fire me as a customer!)

I know this is not a trendier brand . Yet, trendier brands are either not cut for my shape or simply stop before my size.

I want to avoid frumpalicious, especially as it is so easy for me to slip into. I fight for ever bit of style quotient I may have as it just doesn't come easily to me.

Any ideas of other brands to try? Or perhaps of other ways to avoid the frumpaliciousness? Maybe I should focus more on shoes or accessories?
