I'm late to this and didn't even make through all the commentsyet but wanted to pin something out for myself"it's better for me NOT to buy a boho floral print in a mid-quality fabric in a dressier style (for example) because I DON'T end up wearing it with my better ". Wow, my bulb went on here, you are really putting a finger on my bloody wound..:-((.

Oh, and forgot to praise you for commitment you did your job so well! I'm impressed! Now off to apply it in practice-that is the second hardest job I think....

I also think that boho in a Canadian winter is just dead hard. Peasant tops, ruffles, light layers - none of those work. Ditto wide legged jeans in snow. So I think it’s natural for some to embrace boho elements that feel ‘free- er’ in a season that feels free-er to us - even if it’s a short one.

@Jenn - agree! And, I saved myself a lot of money and angst, when I owned the ‘boho’ element of my summer style. Previously, the summer boho purchases would get edited when I went through the ‘what was I thinking’? stage of closet clean-out in October. Now I keep a (small) capsule of boho things, and authorize myself to ADD one new boho piece each summer to scratch that itch. This summer I’m thinking a ditsy floral dress with a flounce, or a tiered prairie skirt I can wear with a tank top and jean jacket.

I understand the appeal of the boho look in summer and lean that way myself. It is the looseness, the light fabrics, the vacation feel of it etc.. And as it is too hot for scarves and coats - jewelry comes into its own.

The good thing is that this look doesn't really change much so pieces can last a long time....

But like to keep it crisp so as you astutely said = boho-lite ....and remix it with the rest of my trendy classic fluid structure.

Youve done great work here!

I totally get the different persona for summer. Our season is so short that it feels worth celebrating in a unique way. For myself, I skew more preppy than boho, but I wear more casual, more feminine, and more juxtaposed looks in the summer, even for work. More skirts, bare legs, sneakers and sandals. Besides, summer is so different in temperature that there is almost no overlap in wardrobe items with the other seasons.

kkards - I understand how the Boho aspect seems like it comes out of left field. I think it's because the FIT of the boho looks work better for me in our hot summers .....rather then a more fitted preppy or classic look. Also - it allows me to indulge my inner magpie with crazier accessories , which I wouldn't be doing with a more professional look. I don't know -you've made me think here!

Late to this.
I’m impressed with how much detail and thought you’ve put into this. So interesting that your summer persona is so different from the rest of the year. For me, #1 Urban Lux Pro, #2 Polished Urban Cas & #4 Urban Athlete all live in the same closet, borrowing pieces from each other. But #3 the Boho Cali girl feels like a visitor who’s dropped in. But i understand the appeal of this look.
re icons, I keep coming back to Katie Holmes, whose style i think of as quiet, and sophisticated, even at its most casual.

I am intrigued by the distinctions in the first two categories and why you choose one over the other. I also wander between neutrals and color/pattern but it is more mood than situation based. Well the situations might determine your mood I suppose. Anyway, a exemplary and inspiring analysis!

Wow, you put a lot of work into this, and it shows. I think it will really help you feel less scattered when you look at your wardrobe, because you really have MULTIPLE wardrobes for your different avatars. That makes total sense. I agree with others that having those percentages will really help guide your choices as you edit and refine.

I'm thinking I could really benefit from doing this exercise, myself, but I just can't right now. I think the big project I just finished temporarily drained all my capacity for organization and analysis. You've inspired me to try in a week or two, though.

Such a great analysis!
Following with interest as I am re- assigning my goals, roles and %’s in my “ viral retirement “ , still trying to make it a “ vital retirement “. I like your categories.

I agree “ downslope “ worked better most of the time than the other way round. Can add good boots or a leather jacket to way casual pieces ( though there are still some styles and fits that would look too prim). While I always like the IDEA of wearing a Hanes white T shirt with a black suit- )remember when fashion magazines were full of that) , and I love juxtaposition-it’s more likely that can be is creative fields, or reversed where the suit jacket is dressed down , than wearing the T shirt in the hospital Ortho boardroom.
Oh well I digress.
But I can relate because I am looking at loungewear, casual, step- above casual etc and while I’m very interested in crossing capsules and juxtaposition, I am also seeing potential for better outfits if I try some strictness or discipline of what really goes with what.
Not to be afraid of try- ons and experimenting-“ it’s my wardrobe and I’ll wear it if I want to “- but more along the lines of,some other post here awhile back, sometime we get carried away trying to wear too many things or things too many ways ( look- I can wear my shirt as a hat!) that I,at least, then find I didn’t wear combinations I truly love , as many times as I would like.

Janet - I agree. Despite some differences, we have a lot of similar aspects to our way of dressing. You're always inspiring me in some way or another.

LaPed - you are absolutely right . That's a weak spot in my summer wardrobe for sure. I've got a couple of nice summer blazers, but my bottoms are all really casual, and if I had to pull together a super professional look I might be in trouble. I've become a bit lazy in that regard and fall back on a denim dress and wedges when I need to be dressed up. Good point and food for thought.

Something interesting on a purely personal note — I know that you and I have different styles and different color palettes, but I like seeing how our preferences and needs overlap. Many pieces that work for you also work for me. I have leaned into the athleisure thing in the last few years, but I like it done in a refined way that incorporates a little of my rocker or artist edge, whereas you bring that sort of urban sophisticate side to it. And we both love to accessorize thoughtfully. You’ve given me some good food for thought here too.

This is such a great break-down. I think that in the best outfits you've shown us, you milk the tension between hard-edged neutral pieces and softer pieces in delicate colours. I associate that hard/soft contrast with your core style, and what I like best in your WIWs is when those four avatars rub shoulders. Sporty professional, hard-edged boho, etc.

The one thing that stands out to me is that you say you spend all summer in California Boho mode. Do you have enough urban-minimalist-professional pieces in lightweight fabrics that you can put together a sleek neutral ensemble for hot weather when the need arises? (I could totally just be projecting on you right now; developing a hot-weather capsule of "real clothes" for when I need a refined neutral look is an ongoing goal of mine.)

This is great. I think this more segmented approach will really help with some of the seeming disparities you’ve been struggling with. Your whole wardrobe doesn’t need to be mix n match for every occasion. Avatar based capsules for the win! *happy dance* It makes sense that you’d have different personae based on different times and places in your life. Very practical, actually!

Brava! This seems very accurate to me, based on the outfits I've seen over the years. And, as Angie said, there's no contradiction. Gemini to the core!

I think what will be really useful, in addition to figuring out the proportion of time spent in each avatar, which you've done -- is asking yourself as you get dressed: Is this a #1 or a #3 occasion? (Or maybe a #1 or #2 occasion, because as TorontoGirl noticed, #1 is the situation in which you might be most likely to feel "off" if you dressed as one of your other avatars. And you're less likely to make mistakes with boho summer style.)

You are absolutely right that for winter, coat and boots are all. And you have a fab assortment of coats and footwear and you almost always display confidence in your choice of coat and feel good in your coats. So it's not really a problem area for you at all and never has been.

YES to Robin Wright, and JA in Morning Show. I wish ! And gryffin- I do agree wholeheartedly that assigning a moniker helps with identifying where a piece might fit in and if that "persona" would wear it. But I see my avatar names as having that function. Angie nailed it in that I'm a true Gemini in having a couple of personalities ,and one moniker might not work for me.

I agree with all who suggested that there is lots of potential for crossover, but....this is where I have to be careful. To stay true to these looks, it's better for me NOT to buy a boho floral print in a mid-quality fabric in a dressier style (for example) because I DON'T end up wearing it with my better , "luxe" clothes. Pieces mix / work better going down the list rather than up the list, if you know what I mean.

As to seasonal issues (i.e. winter) it's pretty simple. My boho tendencies go to bed for the winter, and it becomes all about the coat and the boots over any of the existing pieces. Sure, I'll add in cashmere sweaters, and some plaid wool pants but a lot of it remains the same in terms of style. That's why I have a variety of coats ranging from lux-looking faux furs, leathers and wools... to puffers, nylon technical coats with quilted linings and bomber jackets....to leopard print car coats and teddy /boucle loose fit numbers. And a million pair of boots in a variety of styles

And thank you Carla - I appreciate your support here ! I worked hard at this !

Angie and Jenni - YES, assigning the amount of time I wear each of these "looks" was one of the most important things to me. If left to my own devices, I'd spend all my money on leather jackets , gorgeous coats, blouses, and boots. When in reality, I don't need a lot of that kind of thing. And it felt good to own up to my inner hippie and admit that I dress that way for a good part of the year! I think the visual piechart method is worthwhile.

Totally thought of Jennifer in the Morning Show ... She's a great one. Chic and understated, but modern .

OMG! I don’t believe it! :-D

Well done, Lisa! So well articulated. This is a great word picture and spans all your disparate selves. What Angie said. I can totally see a closet rail (with a moderate - not minimal, not maximal) collection that encompasses all the avatars.

This is really good and I hope it helps! I am yet to do this. What I see as the most helpful to you- and hopefully to me in time- is the division of time you spend as each avatar and thus the proportion of clothes that should fit each one.
My downfall (probably not yours) is the number of “going out tops”. I just don’t go out enough to justify the number I have-and especially lately! I *think* I have managed to learn this in the past year :)
Nice categories!

Angie’s suggestion of Robin Wright in House of Cards is a really good analogue for the #1 perspective.
