Ingunn, it's helpful to read about your journey. I have to be a minimalist due to a very tiny closet, so I must resist the urge to purge too much. I'm so glad I didn't throw out my stompy rain clogs with rubbery, high-traction soles, because it rained last week and I was cozy and happy, high and dry!

Thank you for sharing your insights Ingunn. You are so analytical about your wardrobe which I find impressive. I need to be quite analytical about operating a restaurant -- the margins are very slim -- although I don't know how effective I am in getting employees to reduce waste. Some are better than others. Sidetrack. Anyway, since my job is a combination of intense customer service and analytical business-mindedness, I feel less energetic about analyzing my wardrobe again (I did it a few years ago and realized, I have a lot of stuff! that is unworn!). Sometimes I feel tired about all of the energy that goes towards collecting, caring for, and getting rid of clothing. So I understand the minimalist urge. But I'm not a minimalist, and I love to shop, hence the tension.

I love these types of analysis and insight posts. I did wear more dresses and skirts this fall, actually more than I expected, but that was cut off sharply when the cold hit about 2 weeks ago. Not tempted at all, no matter how warm the tights are.

And I am wearing my red wool peacoat more than I expected because it hits the perfect balance of warmth for the current level of chill. But the minute the temps drop further I know it will be put away for the real coats. It is true we have a short fall window for trenches, but we also have these different temperature ranges, like maybe over 6, from 4 to -4, below -4, and below -12 that means different coats for every range? I certainly dislike wearing more bulk than I have to. It has been pretty mild so far, maybe a reason you wear the coat that doesn't layer well, you don't need the layers?

In my fall analysis I actually discovered a hole for a pair or two of slacks/bottoms to replace/supplement what I have because I am reusing the few I love too much. But I am soooo uninspired to go shopping. I think the overabundance of holiday and party wear just puts me off.

PS. good for you getting into yoga and training and your other hobbies again. Everything in moderation, no?

Yes it does, Caro! Today I stopped myself from buying a lovely dress because I know I'm not going to be wearing it (it was a party dress, maxi length). I felt quite relieved afterwards.

Rachy, you are right - right! I loved reading about your coat selection and attachment. I thinks you should focus on puffers from the sound of it.

This is really good, Ingunn. It's like, right, right?!

It interests me that out of all the skirts and dresses you have, you've settled on the one pencil and houndstooth dress. Is it the season? The fashion? Or something else, more to do with personal style?

I was looking at my coats earlier and thinking about it, what I was wearing and how much.

I bought a replacement for my navy Berarndo puffer (a teal Berardo), but I haven't been able to detach from the navy and give it away yet. I sort of save the new one for when I go into the office and then rotate between old coats when just mucking about the neighborhood.

Speaking of which, I haven't been able to detach from my old, ratty LL Bean brown puffer. It has a double zip, good pockets, is very warm and, well, makes it clear we're not part of the transient "good citizen" contingent in our neighborhood - i.e., the enemy. A lot of dangerous, bad yuppies. Trouble-makers every single one of them.

The coat that I'm wearing the most, however, is my mixed media Nautica from Ross. A dark forest green, black "leather sleeves." A little thin for late night, but good during the day (although deeper into winter, I'll have to abandon all of them for my ankle-length puffer).

So anyways, 4 coats in major rotation. Wool coats don't get out so much.

I wonder if I should just stop with the wool coats.

This was fascinating Ingunn: thanks for sharing it with us all! I actually wear my more formfitting tops in cooler weather; when it's hot I don't want anything touching me more than it has to. But I've only been a YLF participant for less than a month, and it's already changing how I see my closet! I suspect I'll be doing my own analysis soon.

… sorry about the disruption, dinner got in my way:)

Tracey, that has crossed my mind, too. After all, I really love all my current dresses, and I'm not purging any of them for a while yet. On the other hand it is also quite fun and interesting to let everything happen in the spur of a moment and not think too much. It's like food: When overdone, it's not as appealing as when it is still fresh - at least that's how I see it.

Suz, yes! I've really learned a lot. The NO-vember challenge interested me a lot, but I never had time or energy to take photos. I believe I never repeated any outfits 100%, though, so in some way I joined.

Lisa, I completely agree. Tracking makes you very aware of what you have, need, or in my case, don't need! I have only three pairs of jeans, and they are more or less the same style, so it has in fact occurred to me that I want another one, more loosely fitted. I also want to replace my current dark wash because it is starting to show too much wear for smart casual wear. I read several of your threads on your DH's challenge, and it was very inspirational!

Tex, thank you, and also a big hug for your lovely comment on my blog:)

Adelfa, yes! Isn't that funny? I'm curious too, and will continue tracking my wears for a while longer to see what happens.

Angie, that is so interesting. Maybe your pink coat (which is stunning) has split the position in your wardrobe with the red coat? I suppose coats and footwear have stronger(?) longevity in most people's wardrobe, particularly if one is a mainly modern classic dresser. This resonates with me. I think my red coat will get back in rotation now when the weather cools down further, and I will also be wearing my grey tapered trousers a lot more in the coming season, I think. Team Trousers seems great for me right now - thanks for the warm welcome! Your reasoning on when to purge is very sensible, too. As long as I feel any love for an item, it will not be purged even after being a benchwarmer for more than a year. This is sound advice.

Unfrumped, this is exactly the same for me. I'm not feeling comfortable in skirts that hit me above my knees right now, particularly without opacue tights. There must also be a middle ground between form fitting and very loose tops, or else I'm not feeling good in those either.

Viva, you're definitely in for interesting insights and about to learn more about your preferences. I'm going to keep up tracking to see where it takes me.

Thanks for sharing your analysis, Ingunn. I am preparing to do my own and it is so helpful to see both how you assessed your wardrobe and what you discovered. I'm so intrigued. Some things I can guess about myself (I know the tops I never grab -- and am wondering if I should just get rid of them now) but some things I think may surprise me (which things I reach for unconsciously). I really loved reading this. Thank you.

Lyn, that's what I want to do, too. I need to save up more money for an upcoming trip to China, and I realize that I have enough clothes. My goal is to cut my spending by 25% next year.

Deborah, I agree! I still have a lot of love for my red coat. This exercise has indeed been very useful to me, as I'm now very aware of the fact that I don't need anything more than I already have. I'm in fact considering to remove all the pieces I don't love for awhile to see what happens then. No rigid numbers, but creating a selection purely based on what I feel are interesting pieces to wear. Maybe I will fall back in love with some of the rejects again later, like I did with my plaid coat?

To be continued….

Ingunn, such a useful analysis.

I'm also shunning my tighter-fitting tops but in a few cases I went too far the other way and got some tops that swamp me. Live and learn.

Also shorter skirts--I have several skirts that before this year did not seem too short at all and now if I can see all of my knees, they seem to scream "too short". Tights help, and I'm not ready to toss out, but I can see I'm going to reach for the ones that are mid-knee.bottom of knee. Also that going forward I probably will aim for that extra inch of length as having more longevity (and tracking style-wise with my hopefully increasing longevity)-plus you can always take a hem up, but less successful covering the hem crease to let down.

Angie's comment on when to hold or fold is really relevant, and something to ponder.

So interesting, Ingunn. It's also fun to see how things in our wardrobe go in and out of favour each season. With my new pink man coat in rotation - my red coat is worn less frequently. I hardly ever wear my black trench coat (going on 4 years now) because I much prefer my citron and cream trench coats, which are also old. I'm not wearing my snakeskin and zebra booties because I prefer my new solid white and ink booties. Also, after not wearing leopard booties for years, I've been wearing them a lot again because I like them with white jeans. Same goes for a black leather jacket that went virtually unworn last season in favour of tartan and tweed.

I guess the crucial question here is whether to pass on items that go unworn for a year. I have written a post about that and concluded that you should keep items you love even when they go unworn for a while.

Also, you live in a cold place, Ingunn. It's jeans and trousers all the way for people like us. Welcome to Team Trousers.

Great information here. I find tracking habits over a length of time gives some great insight you just can't get any other way. It wasn't until recently when I started a challenge DH gave me, that I realized I have WAY too many black items and I don't care to sport black every day. And that I don't mind having only 5 pairs of jeans in rotation at a time (I woudl have guessed at least 7 before starting the challenge). And it's nice that you now have some free time to persue other passions.

It sounds as if your analytical brain is still working hard for you and helping you make good sense of your closet. Some very interesting insights here. Tracking over a long period can be amazingly useful, can't it? I am finding this as well. We did a "no repeat November" challenge which required daily photos and it was the first time I'd done an unbroken string of daily photos ever. I learned a great deal from the exercise that I am still processing.

Ingunn this is really interesting. The red coat going unworn was a surprise, but then as you weather gets cooler, I'm sure that will change. What impact has this assessment had on you? I still think despite massive purging that I have more clothing than I need. The smaller wardrobe full of pieces I LOVE is becoming more and more appealing.

Hi Ingunn.
I was wondering how you are, not having seen your SYC thread last month.
Glad that you have been enjoying other hobbies as well as taking stock of the items you have enjoyed wearing.
I too am hoping to curb my spending, and I am aiming to cut items bought (and purged) by 1/2, and spending by 1/4 in 2014.

Hi all, it's been a while! I hope you're all doing fine.

I decided to stop shopping in late October because my budget for 2013 was blown, and it has been quite interesting to notice how quickly my focus turned from shopping to other things, and quite a relief too, actually. I've also been registering what I wore for three months now, and it is interesting to analyze the data. I have only added one garment to my wardrobe in November - a sweater I've knitted for myself. Other than that, the only thing I've bought is a new pair of running shoes. My old ones were from 2010 and just wouldn't do anymore. The thing is, I've taken up exercise again, and I'm currently doing yoga two hours a week, and cardio/weight training for another three hours. I'm getting stronger! I've also refocused on photography, albeit I'm only slowly getting back in the groove. A few minor results can be seen on my photo blog.

What I've learned about my wardrobe the past season:

I've been thinking of myself as a skirt and dress girl, but they say numbers don't lie, right? Here are my most frequently worn pieces between September 1 and December 1, meaning worn more than 5 times:

Tops:

White shirts (generic, I have three)

Green plaid shirt

Breton

Navy sleeveless top

Navy cashmere v-neck sweater

Grey wool v-neck sweater

Yellow merino v-neck sweater

Black merino v-neck sweater

Graphic sweater in black, white and caramel

Grey boyfriend cardigan

black basic cardigan

Comment:
I'm all over more fluid shapes this season. My most fitted tops and blouses remain unworn. I've also discovered that the chambray shirt is a Spring/Summer piece for me, so I've removed it. I have a lot of v-neck sweaters, probably too many. When any of these must be replaced, I'll consider crew necks or boat necks instead. I love wearing thin knitwear in wool, and would like to add a little to my collection in the sales in January.

Skirts:

Black wool midi pencil skirt

Comment:
This was a surprise because I feel I'm wearing skirts quite often. I have been wearing my red midi pencil skirt a few times, and the purple full midi skirt, too, but not as often as I thought. I'm not even looking at my shorter skirts this season.

Trousers & jeans:

Black cropped wool trousers

Blue jeans (generic, I have three)

White jeans

Navy bootcut trousers

Black skinny pants/jeggings

Comment:
I have obviously been wearing jeans a lot more than I'm aware of, the three pairs I have have got 13 wears between them. One pair that has been too tight is fitting me better now after I started working out again, and is a welcome change from a low rise pair that I don't love that much. A new pair of dark wash premium denim is on my wish list, but not an urgent replacement need. I love wearing white jeans in Autumn, and am curious to see if it will follow me into the deep of winter. The most surprising two pairs are both thrifted: A wool bootcut Boss trouser and a COS slim legged pant/jegging. I love both equally much and wear them all the time.

Dresses:

Houndstooth dress

Comment:
None of my other dresses have gotten more than one wear the entire season. I suspect a couple of my dresses that are in pure wool will see more air when Winter arrives. I also think a couple of dresses are too tight (ack), and hope to remedy this with a little exercise and conscious eating.

Jackets & Coats:

Trenchcoat

Denim jacket

Blazer (generic, black and grey)

Parka

Puffer

Plaid coat

Comment:
The most surprising discovery is that my red coat is hanging almost unworn. The remarkably mild weather has rekindled my love for the plaid coat which is too tight with another topper underneath. It is more fitted than the red coat, a little shorter, and I really like it again. Last season I intended to donate it, but kept it just in case. I'm glad I did! The trench was worn mainly in September, as the season for trenches here is very short both in Spring and Autumn.

Shoes:

Blue wedges

Brown heeled booties

Stone suede booties

Brogued Chelsea boots

Old nubuck Chlsea boots

Caramel colored boots

Comments:
No surprises here, really. I had planned to retire my old Chelsea boots, but the two pairs have very different uses, so I've kept the old ones for casual wear.

If you've made it this far, I'm very impressed by your patience. Please feel free to ask questions or share your thoughts if you like. Thanks for reading!
