I think with the cuffs turned back, the navy blazer's sleeves are a good length.

For jackets, I aim for just below the wrist bone or if you like them longer, just to the thumb joint. For tops, I often go a little above the wrist bone, so they don't interfere too much with a bracelet or watch.

I do see the difference! I just took a couple quick Photo Booth shots of the jacket with the cuffs as turned back as they can go. Is it still too long? (I know the quality isn't great, so if you can't see enough to judge I'll retake them in the next few days.)

For something like a blazer or jacket I like it when it ends just over the base of my thumb when I have the arms hanging down. That way it doesn't look too long and the sleeves aren't too short when I bend my arms. I don't mind if my top underneath has longer sleeves, because most of the time you can easily pull those sleeves down or shove them over your wrist because they're knits.

Below is one of my jean jackets, the first picture was the K/R pic before I had the sleeves shortened. The second one has the jacket with shorter sleeves. Do you see the difference?

Thnx Janet!

Lucy, I’ll have to add a safety pin to see how much more waist definition I’d get my moving the hook & eye.

Suz, thank you! My eyes change colour (green/blue/grey) depending on what I’m wearing, but I love grey eyes (my best friend in high school had pure grey, silvery eyes: they were incredible), which is why I started wearing lots of grey to begin with. It would be pretty awesome if the ruffle could be optional, but I suspect the jacket would look very odd with no lapel, as it’s quite a deep v & double breasted. I’ll fold the ruffle in though and give it a try.

Thanks AlaskaGirl.

Firecracker, how long should jacket sleeves be? I’m trying to learn more about fit this year, and as it didn’t even occur to me to ask about sleeve length in my original post, clearly this is off my radar! Thnx for all the feedback!

Astrid, I’m asking the same thing to you: how long should sleeves be? I just checked, and the navy blazer’s cuffs can be turned up a little higher so the sleeves a bit shorter. I think it’d be an expensive alteration though, because the tailor would have to detach the cuff, shorten the arm, then reattach the cuff (and the jacket’s fully lined). I’ll get a new photo of them turned up more: any suggestions for how to stand for figuring out fit? Or maybe just bigger photos?

Thanks Crst! Ruffles are definitely a style classic of mine. I wish my hair was always wavy, but it’s actually straight. Still, I enjoy a romantic look!

With your soft romantic natural look - wavy hair and soft features - I especially love the gray one. Ruffles may not be "fashion forward" at the moment, but I think it looks perfect on you. And a classic for your style.

I love the grey one, I think it's perfect for you and the color is great. I do prefer it closed. And I like the navy too, although it is difficult to judge the fit from the pics. I second Firecracker on the sleeve length though, but that's something I fuss about so feel free to ignore me! That said, I think the navy velvet jacket would look much better with shorter sleeves. The longer sleeves work better on the grey jacket, because of the lighter color and they almost seem to 'echo' the ruffle at the neckline. On the dark jacket they just contribute to the feeling that the jacket overwhelms you a bit.

I like them both on you, and I think they both go with your style. I think the sleeves look long on both of them--you mentioned that you like them that way, and that's fine. It's just something I noticed when critiquing the fit.
I really like the gray color on you--like Carter my immediate thought was that it matches your eyes, and it's gorgeous on you. (I like your hair, too! Fun, for a little different look.) As to whether you'll get enough wear out of the blazers, I'm not a good judge. I feel if you like them you'll find opportunities to wear them. And they are classic enough silhouettes that I don't see them going out of style soon--you could get several seasons out of them.

I think the length of each of them works slightly better with the jeans than with the full skirt. Though I like them both with the skirt, too. I think I've just gotten used to a little boxier look with full skirts lately.

You really do have amazing eyes and the grey of that jacket emphasizes them!

I like both jackets for you and think they work brilliantly with your style. I love the richness of the blue.

Here's a crazy thought about that ruffle. Wouldn't it be amazing if you could alter it so that you could either have it on there...or not? Like the old fashioned fur collars on some coats and jackets. Not sure that type of alteration would be possible, but worth investigating?

Thank you Carter for the compliments & jacket feedback! :)

Alasse, I think moving the hook & eye would still look good with skinnies; I don't mind having more body con looks when I'm wearing more fabric, if that makes sense.

Thnx Viva! I am pretty good about rotating through my closet items (vs playing favourites).

Oh MG, you always seem able to read my mind. So if I keep it, I plan to tack the collar down (right now it can flip itself off, which completely overwhelms me, so I did a couple pins for the photo), which will I think lessen the ruffle's presence a tiny bit. But it's definitely still quite a bit of ruffle; I suppose it would be possible to hem it shorter(for a tailor, not me). Also, I actually prefer it when my sleeves are this length! I realise it makes for a less formal look though. You've given me food for thought, as always, so thank you.

Big yes on the blue velvet. It's fine the way it is, but nipping it in a bit more at hte waist would be awesome too.

The grey one is a maybe. I feel like the ruffle sort of over powers you. I actually like it better open than closed. If you keep it, definitely shorten the sleeves. I can see why you would love it, and it's definitely got possiblities -- hmm, is it possible to sort of hem the ruffle, so it's not quite so ... big?

Navy: I like it better with the skinnies, due to colour/length/something?. I'd move the hook & eyes for wearing with a dress (hopefully more fitted would work with skinnies?). I don't know if that's too strong a navy on you or not without a close-up; otherwise, I think you'd wear it given your blazer preferences, colour scheme, & enjoyment of larger closet.

Gray: Wear closed; it looks good with dresses & skinnies; and I think the colour is fine on you. (Your face is beautiful in the closeup!)

In the same Like Twice order, I also happened to put a couple cooler weather toppers in my cart. *cough* Once again, I can afford to keep them both, and I love them, but would like forum feedback re: fit/if they match my style/wouldn't be duplicates in my closet before committing. In cooler months, I mainly wear either full skirts + body con knit tops or body con skinnies + woven tops, so I showed one of each silhouette, as I'd like these to work with either (I have a couple jackets that only work over skinnies and thus get less wear). I wore bulky socks with the skirt to 'stand in' for my usual sturdy footwear.

First up is a J Crew navy blue cotton velvet blazer. It's fully lined (and has the most adorable little ruffle on the lining), has two pockets and little turn back cuffs, and seems like good quality. Since the closure is just a hook and eye, I could move both about 1/2" in to make it a full 1" smaller in the waist for more definition, so the outer edges of the blazer would touch when closed. At first I thought I should hold my arms straight out so you could judge fit, but then that seemed ridiculous so in the rest I just stood like I normally would. I wore a dark charcoal sweater over the skirt, which I realized in the pics was a mistake for fit judging, so I've made the skirt photos much lighter. Shown closed and open. I do not currently have any navy blue blazers/indoor jacket toppers, and it's one of my main neutrals. I do have 2 other velvet blazers, both of which have peplums and are more romantic in style.

Next up is a Banana Republic wool/cashmere blazer. It's also fully lined, and the wool is so delicious. I just finished Alison Weir's fabulous group biography The Wives of Henry VIII, which might be biasing me in favour of the Elizabethan ruff of a collar. Pretty sure it's only meant to be worn closed, but I showed it open over the jeans in case I was wrong. I don't have any dressy/business-ish jackets at the moment that I'd be comfortable wearing to a daytime event. My only current grey wool blazer is a medium/medium-dark colour and can't be worn with skirts/dresses. I also don't have any cool weather jackets/blazers that are this light of a colour. I do have 2 other wool blazers (one a taupe, one a taupe & navy pattern) that can be worn over skirts/dresses. I want to make sure this dove/pearly grey is flattering on me (not too bright or warm) so I included a couple close ups that are mainly lit by natural light. (I have my wool skirts packed away at the moment, so I put this over my heaviest cotton skirt; I'm not sure these colours are the best together so don't worry about that.)

Don't judge how much I like the jackets by my facial expressions: I got very little sleep last night (hours of thunderstorms & a dog allowed to sleep in the bed who shakes/pants uncontrollably in fear during said storms is not a recipe for a enthusiastic photo model). And forgive the messy hair please; I wanted to see what it would do after being braided for a couple days, and now I know. ;)

Wardrobe function question: in my current climate, I can wear blazers about 4, maybe 5, months out of the year. If I move to a more northerly climate, I imagine that number probably would remain pretty much the same, unless I layered them under heavy winter coats. I currently have 7 blazers (3 wool, 2 velvet, 1 velveteen, 1 corduroy; 1 taupe, 2 medium grey, 1 burgundy, 1 taupe/navy, 2 brown; 6 work with skirts/dresses and trousers/1 is trousers only) and wore them all this past fall/winter. I'm not a wardrobe minimalist, and enjoy having each of my favourite items in each of my favourite colours (navy & grey are certainly perennial favourites around here). Is 9 blazers too many? These would certainly complete my blazer collection, so I wouldn't be adding any more.

Fitting questions: do they fit in the shoulders? Is the waist defined enough to work w full skirts? Do the necklines flatter me (enough)? Am I correct that the grey jacket should only be worn closed?

Style Questions: do they fit into my general style (for those who know it)? For those who don't, think folksy gamine with romantic, vintage touches (those k/r posts make me wish I had 1 succinct, consistent style descriptor).

Once again, sorry about the photo overload. I just can't think of a less photo-intensive way to display everything.
