Hello and a big wave to other Aussie members on here!

Oh my, those snow pictures were a welcome break from all the heat we've all had lately. I think I could spend all day looking at them.

Like a lot of the other forum members, I have absolutely *lived* in dresses all summer long. I have one or two which are a jersey and the others are cotton.

Up here in Queensland I've found that with the humidity, anything with layers makes me feel completely sticky and icky. Interestingly, in the dry heat, layers didn't bother me quite as much.

I've found a pretty summer dress, a bangle or necklace, my new sandals (for a casual day at home) or wedges (for out and about) with a light coloured handbag makes me feel comfy and pulled together.

I've loved being able to wear the dresses now my children have *finally* moved past toddler age into being school-kids. In the early days of motherhood, unfortunately wearing a skirt or a dress was a risky exercise as my youngest child went through a terrible phase of wanting to play "peek-a-boo!". For this little game he would suddenly and randomly without warning lift up my dress/skirt and gleefully yell those fateful words. We won't mention the time he decided to play his little game on the school run in front of ALL the parents one morning. And I was wearing bright pink undies. Oh, well I guess at least I made an impression! Funnily enough, now he is a "big boy", he has no memories of his love of playing that little game "with Mummy"...

Ah, I'm glad you asked this! I used to live in the desert and was quite used to being hot all the time but I have thoroughly adjusted to the chilly climate here, and I have been dreading an upcoming late spring visit to said desert. Most traditional summer clothes are really not comfortable for me, so it was nice to read what other people do.

I'll check out those wickers things. I have pair of of bike shorts that I sometimes wear with dresses but they are black, and it would be nice to have some lighter colors!

I love this thread, and JulieJohn, you are a dear for asking. I can't believe the heat you poor ladies suffer under. And you manage to do it in such fine style. I am complaining if it is "only" 30 C.....

I've been away for a wedding & got to wear real clothes & experienced cooling breezes & low 80F - heaven.

When it is really hot I can only wear linen - I've made peace with the wrinkles.

Jules - Great idea! I do this too, but didn't know there was such a thing as "yoga shorts". I've been looking for bike shorts, and the pickins are slim, plus everything is black, which doesn't go so well under breezy skirts of light colors. Thanks for the info.

Jen - What a trouper! Keep up the good work!

VC - you are an angel to send all those kind wishes! Yes, we who get hot weather in the other hemisphere are taking notes right now. Great pics, too! What is that white stuff? ;~)

Carolbee - thanks so much for the links! I'm going to check those out for sure. If cotton bloomers were good enough for our grandmas ... hey, maybe there's a steampunk "Victorian underwear" look to be worked on here! Hmmmm....

Anne - great solutions, you are thinking outside the hot box! I think cold showers in your underwear sounds very intriguing, and I'm going to try that in the hottest heat. I'll bet it dries much too quickly after you get out, but it's heaven while it lasts, right?

Yes, thanks Deborah thats the right site. Its a bit tricky to move around the site, but the cotton bloomers are $14.95, white only. Not quite an elegant look but if it allows the wearing of dresses in high summer than its ok by me.

Julie, thanks for asking and VC thanks for those cooling images!

Like carolbee I am on the west coast and our temps have been quite temperate recently, a very welcome reprieve!

I am not really that happy with my clothing when we do have the hot weather. I basically circulate between 3 cotton dresses, with one extra linen one that is not my size and has a little bleach stain and which stays at home. I also wear tanks and shorts at home, but don't like the look of shorts on me much, so change if I go out.

Other strategies for coping involve short cold showers in my underwear several times a day, not asking very much of myself (I try to do a little housework in the morning, but that is about it) and having cold or icy food.

In the west our temps have been mid 20s to low30s C, so not too bad at the moment, I can wear my summer uniform of 3/4 pants and light weight T. When its super hot I break my no sleeveless rule and wear sleeveless tops, but no spaghetti straps!

I've mentioned previously for those that have the thigh chafing problem like me I got a pair of moisture wicking bloomers from Wickers, so US girls check them out. They were a bit expensive to get here, but on an Aussie site Deborah posted for dresses I saw cotton bloomers very reasonably priced. I will try these next. I'm not sure how to add a link using my tablet but the site is Semaya Fashions.

Here are some pics from my front porch (taken just a week or so ago) to cool you off a wee bit...and another one, taken last spring..(pic #3) when it was an insane 110'ish F in early June (before breakfast even)...just to let you know that I do know what it's like to deal with ridiculously hot temperatures in the summer.

Lyn, I really like your super-stylish tank top with the slim bermuda shorts - it looks just fab on you, especially in these hot temperatures - amazing! And Deborah, I'm in awe of how well you can turn a seemingly basic black knit tank dress into something very glam - the interesting hem, the cuff, the necklace and gorgeous sandals are what make this sing! Who'd have thought that one can be glamourous and stylish in such hot temperatures? Thank both you for sharing

This is such a good question to ask the fab Aussie YLF'ers because I find that summer is my most difficult season for dressing - it's just way too hot and it's tough to try and look nice in that kind of heat. I usually just wilt, complain a bit, then melt into some kind of helpless puddle - before ending up with a pile of tee-shirts and boring shorts.

Sending cooling breezes, fab fall fashion catalogues, homemade iced tea, swimming pools, rain, snow and whatever else might make things a wee bit better in the midst of an insanely hot heat wave.

I often wear yoga shorts under my dresses (and skirts). This is actually really comfortable on a hot day - somehow you still get the breeziness of a light dress, and the comfort of no waistband, but thighs don't stick together.

Lyn D - I know what you mean about dresses and thigh stick, ugh. When fall came and I could wear pants regularly I realized how uber-comfy they are. I really like your outfit, and the top is lovely especially.

Deborah, thanks for your comments, and those outfits are really nice. I especially like the blue and white print dress on you, it looks cool and pretty.

Lyn, that top looks divine!

Deborah, I hear you on the dearth of stylish summer shift dresses! Something in woven linen/cotton that covers from shoulders to knees would be ideal. And thick enough that we could skip a slip (although I confess to skipping when I really shouldn't). When it's over 115F and other women my age are sporting "booty" shorts, I could care less if someone can make out the outline of my legs beneath my skirt!

Keep cool Aussie ladies!

I'm with you, Deborah - it usually ends up being a dress. I also have a couple of linen knit T-shirts, which are slouchy and cool.
I hate the wrinkling that comes with linen, but have found that the knit fabrications don't have that problem and I love the textural interest, so it's win-win!

JJ you are really sweet to think of us. I am further inland in regional Victoria (about 2 hours from where Lyn D is) so our weather is usually a few degrees. warmer than Melbourne and we have been sweltering this week:). I don't enjoy the hot weather and was complaining to my DH last night that I just want to be able to dress "properly" lol. In the extreme heat I definitely compromise my style if I am not working. At the office air conditioning means I can still wear a jacket etc so that's not a big drama but I'm on leave until Feb and at home/casual dressing is where I find myself wearing things for practicality (yuck). The most comfortable for me would be sleeveless, knee length dresses and let me tell you it is hard to find such a thing that is not either frumpy or designed for a 16 year old:). I prefer a sleeve and I like to layer so summer is not as much fun. I also like my shoes but on a really hot day, flip flops are often the go. The heat is such that keeping legs, arms and feet uncovered does help with physical comfort.

I have also added a pair of boyfriend denim shorts to my wardrobe and they are proving useful too:)

Here are a couple of my recent outfits designed for hot days..

Thanks for noticing J.J.
I try to wear shorts or cropped pants with an interesting tank-style top, or sometimes a linen dress in this hot weather.
I prefer shorts though because I don't like my thighs sticking together in the heat!
Here is a pic of a recent outfit- the thrifted top is actually a slightly open weave super fine cotton, and is reasonably cool.

Very good question - I'm interested too! Last summer was insanely hot here ...one morning (Father's Day I think it was) it was 114F at 10:20 a.m.

These days, it's very cold and wintry - but I'm definitely interested in hearing any hot weather strategies our fab Aussie YLF'ers might have to share. I barely (ha ha) made it through last summer and want to be more prepared this time around.

Just saw the news that Sydney is 115F, yikes! I can't even imagine what the inland areas are putting up with, it boggles the mind.

We who are not in Oz send you our cooling thoughts from across the waters, and ask this burning question - What are you Wearing? Or not wearing, as the case may be?

I'm in Inland Southern California, and I could use some tips on how to dress well in the heat. Are you making peace with the crease and swathing yourself head-to-toe in linen? Do you bare more skin than usual, foregoing gauzy coverage for tank tops and shorts? Inquiring minds want to know!
