That camisole and cardigan look lovely for you! I've been exploring less black this summer too: will be interested to see how that pans out this winter. Hang in there and enjoy your patio!

Sal, you know, I really like gray on others, but every single time I've added a gray item to my own wardrobe, I've regretted it. It makes me feel the way I imagine some other people feel in black.,.just drab and lifeless.

Vildy, I miss snow so very much, but more, I miss the first frost and crystal-ice mornings. Sigh.

DonnaF, it's funny, because I had a friend visiting from out of state around New Year's and she, of course, packed her brightly-colored California tourist best. We were walking out to lunch one day in my (non-touristy) neighborhood and she suddenly said, "Does everyone wear black here?" Sure enough, I was in all black, and so was everyone else in our sight line. Not what you might expect from SoCal, but locals wear dark colors just like in any other city.

FWIW, I think there’s something about the light in SoCal that makes me not want to wear my dark NorCal or at least not as much of it. And it’s not just about the slightly higher temperatures. I am planning what I will wear for a San Diego trip in two weeks and my biggest takeaway is that I need to pack my white jeans jacket and vest if I plan to wear my new silver gray sneakers most of the time.

For whites, I guess you’re supposed to match your teeth or the whites of your eyes? When you stop looking they will all jump out at you. But then you better stock up.

I grew up in California and once in a while somebody's dad or older brother would drive up to the foothills and come back with a pickup bed full of snow. I think I remember the Palm Springs aerial tramway where it was desert down below but snow on the ground when you reached the top.

ETA: it was a delight to crunch around in the snow then. Oh the irony.

I shun snow as much as possible now. :D

Mmmm what a year! I do hope California is through the very worst and that the improvements continue. There is lots of hope in some areas.

I have enjoyed a small amount of grey in my wardrobe - light grey is easy to mix in and a nice soft light neutral. Nice with silver or gold jewelry, terracotta colours, browns and black...... I am thinking that if I get a new cardigan I will go for light grey for that reason. Whites are tricky I know - natural or winter or ecru I think would work well on you. Other options could be sage green or that dirty lavender (Carla got a trench in this colour).

Vildy, with no snow to match here, maybe I should be wearing mud colors?

Angie, July in Seattle was REALLY rough, for so many reasons. I'm a little sad that we won't be able to make our planned autumn trip up there. Cases are coming down here too, but as there, not enough. Hope it continues. Lots of boarded-up shops in our neighborhood, as well, and my heart aches for all the little theaters around us.

I'm hoping for some outdoor dining outings in the next few months. Or maybe just park-picnic dates. We'll make the best of it!

nemosmom, my son is in college and is all virtual for the semester. That's good and bad. Glad for the reduced risk, but so sad that his college experience is not what any of us would have hoped! I hope your school restart goes smoothly and safely.

unfrumped, that's wise! I have a "no black dresses" rule for this season. I have plenty!

Suz, it was honestly a kind of terrible time to move to the city, when all the reasons we chose to do that are precisely the things we now don't have access to. I try to remind myself, though, that it's not like we'd be hanging out with friends and family if we were still nearby them. It WILL end, though, and I don't want to have completely neglected my closet in the interim. Life goes on.

shevia, I figure if it's below 95° I'm good to go in jeans. Trying to save my breeziest dresses for above that, because there are PLENTY of days that hot yet to come.

Joy, I'm all settled in and ready for hot fall. Forecast showing 103-ish for Labor Day weekend. We'll be spending it inside!

Minaminu, wow! I won't be pulling out the cold-weather clothes for at least another month, probably two. I like that shirt! That's the kind of color combination I always have my eyes out for.

suntiger, I feel like part of why I have no light neutrals in my wardrobe is that I haven't really found any that are particularly good on me. I don't really look great in beige or camel or optic white. Natural whites are okay. Ivory, if it doesn't lean too warm. I'm just really not good at picking out the right shades!

Runcarla, don't expect me to not be wearing black this winter, though!

RobinF, you're kind of my opposite in that respect! I don't mind light/dark together in a print, but I'm not a fan of big blocks like black pants and a white top or vice versa. I tend to wear back column-of-color or midtones head-to-toe, or either one with denim.

And congratulations on your one year anniversary! It is really strange to try to build new friendships and routines in a COVID landscape, and I get it. We have been in our new home since March and still don't feel in any way established.

But you are right -- we do need to wear something and might as well feel as good as possible while doing it. As usual, your shopping and planning have stood you in good stead so you can have a bit of fun with fashion in the next few months!

I hear that, Jenn!

I have added some sneakers and some simple outfit-completer tops this month in addition to an inexpensive lightweight blazer that ties together several tops and bottoms for a dark neutral capsule. So navy, black and blues were somewhat over-represented for usual summer purchases!

I have so many winter sweaters, from workwear days when I wore a warm sweater almost every day for months on end, that I have written down, "No sweaters this year!". Even if I find I am gravitating to different colors or fabrics, I plan to just cycle through what I've got and see what fits, what is comfortable, what seems permanently obsolete vs. pandemic-affected.

YAY for new jeans! And, congrats on your first year in CA! I admire how well-planned (and paced) you have been with your shopping and editing. Not only in a new climate, but during so much external uncertainty.

Cases are rising slightly here, just in time for school to start! I doubt things will be back to normal (whatever that means anymore) in time to celebrate Halloween or Thanksgiving. We certainly won't be traveling, or having family visit.

A little lightness would be most welcome, in any form! I am excited to see how you incorporate lightness in your palette.

Summer Jeans and a/c work very well together! I get it.

Fun that you're lightening up for cold weather. I really relate....

Congrats on your one year California anniversary, Jenn. WHAT a year it has been. It makes sense that COVID has put a spanner in the works, and really, it's a month to month thing at the moment. Almost everything is a moving target, it seems. Hard to shoot a bullseye.

The best you can do is follow your feelings as you analyse future wardrobe needs with flexibility and thought - which you are doing beautifully.

Seattle is in a similar restrictive state here. Cases have been going down steadily for 3 weeks, but it's still not good enough to move into the next phase of normalcy. Dressing rooms are not open, and half the stores downtown are still boarded up. We had a VERY bad July - worst ever - but are hopefully on the other side of that. Good luck to all of us!

Great post! Totally get the need to lighten up, I am having the same feelings.

I had to do my seasonal wardrobe change, I was a bit sad to it in mid-august but the temperature dropped so much! The wardrobe now is looking very dark I used to wear lots of black and navy during autumn and winter. I am yearning for some light neutral knitwear. I managed to replace a black blouse with a preloved pink one, hope this will help me lighten up my wardrobe! it is a bit of a change as the colour and pattern aree so different from my usual choices but I can see it work with my current pieces.

I love your planning posts. It is hard to believe it is a year already. I think lightening up dark neutrals is a good idea for winter. Y outfits are heavy on dark neutrals now in late summer and January through to midMarch.
This August I have been trying to mix in hot fall items like mustard, rust and olive since we have a rather short hot fall here in Colorado as opposed to many weeks of it in Kansas. The plan is to do more mixing of dark and light neutrals in mid winter instead of all dark. I am looking forward to seeing how your wardrobe evolves in the next few months and what you will buy..

1. JEANS! I found my cropped jeans replacement this month (photo and Find), and I couldn't be happier. Despite record-setting heat, I've already worn the new Warp + Weft jeans six times. (Thank you, air conditioning!) They were the only thing I bought this month, brining my total purchases for the year to eight (3 replacements essentials, 2 accessories, 3 statements/extras). That leaves plenty of space for perking up my wardrobe for fall/winter.

2. August shopping. I like to shop in August, and used the month to do a lot of online/catalog "window shopping" and planning for the coming season. A few things from my wishlist went on sale, so I ordered two items to try on (the cardigan and cami in finds), but they haven't arrived yet.

3. Lightening up. I'm feeling the same urge as La Pedestrienne to lighten up a bit this winter, and have wishlist items in ivory and (non-optic) white, which isn't really a color represented in my wardrobe at the moment. We'll see how that goes. I realize it's a bit ironic to add black items all spring/summer and then turn to light neutrals in the winter. I can't explain it either.

4. The count. I did the annual count in August and, at 85 items, my wardrobe is shrinking. The size feels about right at the moment, not a lot of chaff, but I can see it growing/shrinking by 5-10 items either direction as the year progresses. I'm not anticipating any huge swings.

5. One year in. I just hit my one-year anniversary in CA last week, and was hoping that this would be the point where the patterns would begin to feel more familiar, but with COVID, everything is different and I have no idea how many of the traditions we established last fall/winter will be available to us. It's almost like this first year hasn't happened, at least in terms of meeting new people and getting established with go-to local haunts.

The state announced a reopening roadmap last week that consists of four tiers. My county is currently in the most restrictive of the four (still no indoor restaurants, bars, coffee shops, non-essential offices, libraries, in-person schooling at any level, or museums. Retail is open, but very restricted,) We have to cut COVID cases in half before moving up. From there, based on the guidelines, it will be, at an absolute minimum, 9 weeks of steady progress before we get to the most permissive level. Which means we won't be there by Halloween. Maybe not by Thanksgiving or Christmas. I'm not anticipating being able to travel for the holidays this year or seeing family or friends (none of which are in-state) at all until sometime in 2021.

With all that, I'm having a hard time envisioning how I'll be wearing my clothes this coming season, but hey, gotta get dressed, and I'd rather feel like myself in my clothing even when mostly confined to home, so onward!
