Your life will be different in CA and you are wise to wait until you see what you need. I think the valleys are much warmer than the coastal areas and summer may last longer there, too. I also moved to a different climate area this year, and I'm adding layers. Cool weather lasted much longer than I expected and boredom with wearing the same layers set in. Lucky you to have fabulous shopping options. Online shopping can be a pain.

I love your rust additions. I used to wear a lot of rust, and loved it with olive. I guess it was good planning that your wardrobe was in such good shape that you haven’t needed to add much.

I hear you about summer. I’m sick of it. Mid 90s every day forever it seems. This morning it was in the 50s at the bottom of our yard, so I guess there’s hope.

August challenge: I am trying to replace old items like lower waisted jeans with higher rise ones and using my 3 a month to mostly fill in holes. If I don’t count replacements and underwear, I am doing pretty well. Yesterday I got some things at The Rack clearance sale that I need to try on to decide whether or not to keep, including some jeans with high rise . I also got an order from EF with some replacement summer shoes and a HEWI white dress that will probably go back as it seems a little too much white. There will probably be a K/R post and plea for styling ideas to extend the season of white handkerchief linen, if I keep it.
Winter and the holidays will just be different in the LA area. In time you will adjust. Wait ‘til you see the poinsettias as big as trees blooming. Be sure to put out humming bird feeders. You can easily make the nectar for them . Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is well dissolved. I boil about one minute. Then cool. I keep extra in the refrigerator. Fill feeders. Hummingbirds are especially abundant in Southern CA in winter and you may see multiple birds at a feeder of different varieties. Also watch for raptors along the freeways in winter...falcons and hawks.

Fashintern, I'm not into switching outfits over the course of a day, but evenings here do cool down enough to need layers except in the deepest summer months (July, August, September). The Office of Angela Scott is little formal/dapper for my tastes, but LA has a plethora of indie designers of both shoes and clothing.

Sal, interestingly, some of the small designers I already shop from are here in LA!

After my mom passed away, I went through a bit of an unexpected style shift. That was three years ago, and I'm still feeling the repercussions. Do you feel that happening with you at all?

Jenni NZ, that sounds like a fun weekend! You have been doing so well at prioritizing your values. No doubt you'll do it today as well.

Well you are nailing your challenge! It will be interesting to see whether you get an urge to shop or whether you don’t- and how you feel about a smaller closet. It will be interesting to see if there are local makers in your area with clothing or footwear that you like. I suspect there will be -if I do in this provincial city there have to be in LA!!

I added four in August and with a limit of 30 have five spots left. Definitely one mistake in June ( cable sweater that stained and was far too chunky for me - added weekend after my Mum passed so not in my most clear headed phase) and a couple of casual thrift purchases in April that I like but were not in the plan. So the rest of my year will be frugal. I have a substantial spring summer closet so I will be fine.

I like missvee’s idea of transitions in the different parts of summer. You might also want to slice things differently, because of how you shed and added things as temps changed through a typical day at high altitude. Perhaps you’d enjoy a routine marking different segments of your day with different attire.

Btw, are you a fan of the Office of Angela Scott? They are having a sample sale at their LA store. (Or maybe they just did—sorry I can’t really remember the date).

missvee, I'll admit, I've been craving some white/cream lately, even though I find it a VERY difficult color to wear. We'll definitely do cold-weather getaways, but that's not the same. I am appreciating this place for what it is, but I'm definitely still in mourning.

Well, living in and enjoying* a four season climate, I can understand your reluctance at giving up winter, but maybe there’s an opportunity to plan a cold weather getaway? And as for the extra summer months, maybe you need a few more wardrobe choices? I can see a wardrobe for a long summer starting off with lots of whites and creams, then going into brighter hues, and finally into darker shades like the rusts and blacks in your finds.
* even a die-hard winter fan likes a break in the sun in February lol.

It's super-unusual for me not to buy anything in August (it's my birthday month and the start of fall shopping), but it was also a super-unusual August. As of last Wednesday, we officially live in California, but are still in transition, with the bulk of our possessions in storage until September 10. I'm also dealing (poorly) with the reality that summer is going to continue for another two months and winter won't happen for me anymore. I'm maybe sulking a little.

Here's the boilerplate:

In our yearlong shopping challenge, I committed to buying 31 or fewer items (not counting undergarments).

January - 0 items

February - 5 items

March - 2 items

April - 2 items

May - 4 items

June - 1 item

July - 2 items

August - 0 items

This brings my total purchases for the year to 16 purchases, just over halfway through my allotment, but 3/4 of the way through the year! You can see all my 2019 purchases together in the linked collection. I've retired 23 items this year, so my wardrobe is shrinking. All in all, I have 112 items total in my closet, if I count all categories except jewelry, underwear and sleepwear (though I am counting sleep/lounge in my 31 purchases and my retirements.)
