California hipster...interesting. I'm in the southeast where I don't really see this look very much. Maybe that's why I find it so appealing! I'm looking forward to seeing how your thoughts evolve.

I particularly liked the first pic Clementine posted - a little more dressed up and more polished than the others. Maybe I just don't like a shirt as a jacket, though if I'm just lounging at home I sometimes do this.

Clementine, thanks for the pics. I like some, but the more bare ones seem a bit too - I guess the term is California hipster - to me. I see people around here wearing that kind of outfit all the time and I'd like to figure out how to do something a bit different. Not to mention that I just turned 40 this year and I don't want to look like I'm trying to dress like a twenty something. Still pondering...

Start with really trendy but comfy footwear. Add a great bag (as per Clementine's pins). Stripes, plaids, ginghams for pattern but mostly plains, but do add a bit of shine. And figure out the cuts that feel easiest and most flattering to you for pants/ tops/ toppers.

"Reviewing" your summer and thinking about where you want to go next is a great plan for the late days of the season! I think you'd do androgyny beautifully!

Interesting review. I love the pins that Clementine posted. That is a style I am aiming for. I like the boho drapey look and also the arty edgy look but I have a hard time carrying it off. My mini shoulders are the problem.

Great review and analysis of your Summer! Do you come back to these threads before you shop next year? Do you find that your perspective changes over that time?

Envisioning a casual, practical androgynous look does try to skew frumpy, doesn't it? Instead, I went with "not feminine" and several outfits struck me as casual and practical, but decidedly not frumpy. Is this what you had in mind?

Summer weather is not done here, not by a long shot, but my summer purchasing is. I always find it helpful to write up my thoughts about a season of clothes while I remember, rather than wracking my brain almost a year later when I'm trying to fill gaps for the season ahead.

In past years I wore a lot more dresses, but this year I didn't find myself reaching for them. Part of this was the four weeks of work travel I had - my planned capsule worked well, practically speaking, but by halfway through I was bored to death of it. More proof that I am *not* a minimalist repeater. Thus, I'm not looking for any more knit dresses, but I would love to find a woven shirtdress with a torso that's long enough.

Trends: I tried on some cropped flares and culottes, but didn't immediately love them or see how to make the proportions work for me. I finally started wearing ankle pants this year, so it's not like I'm on the bleeding edge anyway... I am so tired of boho drapiness in stores, so I really hope we start seeing some other options around.

NAS was underwhelming for me this year, which is OK. I got a little makeup, a robe and lounge pants, and a pair of taupe booties which have been a HEWI for a couple of years.

Aesthetically, I'd like to move into a more androgynous look, although I'm still working out the nuances. I don't want a three-piece-suit DapperQ look, although those folks look amazing; I want something more practical and casual. But how do you look casual/practical without looking frumpy or yoga-pant-mom (nothing wrong with that, it's just not my personality), especially when your body shape is unsylphlike? Those are some of the things I've been thinking about.
