I'm glad the tops did not come home with you in #6. A tad small and too short. I like #9 best - good fit.

I showed the pic with that cardi to my husband and he didn't like it at all. I do want to integrate a little more boho into my look, but I'm leaning towards doing it with a blanket coat/sweater. I sure hope there's a way to integrate classic New England style with classic western style, because I love both. I guess "outdoorsy" is the common denominator?

Ankita - Yessssss. I love walking into a dressing room stocked with so much potential wonderfulness. I tend to get hot and tired and frustrated after too much shopping, but the sight of all those wonderful clothes on the bar still makes me happy. I agree with you on the Levi's and you are totally enabling me on those Kut plaid skinnies. They're also a polyester/rayon blend, but that doesn't bother me as much for bottoms.

Lyn - You're an enabler too! I figure Levi's denim jackets aren't going anywhere, so I have some time to shop around but, yes, that probably will be mine sooner rather than later.

You did great! How could we know what fits and f if flatters without trying them all, good and even bad, on? This is part of the process, I think you cannot skip on! It takes effort and time, but it has to be done sometimes, isn't it! BTW the stripe top is brilliant, it will serve you well and I would RUN back for that denim jacket, fits you so well:-)).

Oooooh this is so exciting!
#1 in itself got me doing the ‘haapy dance’ ….there’s something about shopping that makes me go nuts.
Alright, so I quite like the utility jacket on you (#2), it looks very comfortable and cozy. Also looks quite nice with what the striped top you’re wearing underneath.
#3 - I honestly like the look of the Levis better in terms of color and shape. It seems to fit you better at the bust area.
#4 is adorable…I think it’s more you than the sweater though! I do love the style, the knot at the front and if this were a better material it would probably be the perfect throw-on for those semi-chilly evenings And what a lovely colour!!!
#5 : BUY THESE! They look stunning on you… everything about them (to me) is perfect. They’d look so stunning with a silk white shirt tucked in <3
#6 : Love the top on the extreme right, the floral one…so gorgeous on you. Hope you find something like that in cotton or modal or viscose.
#7 : Burgundy and denim are made for you! You look lovely in both these colors.

Elly - This time of year is always my best shopping time. I often count on early fall to build out my summer wardrobe because there's rarely anything at retail for me in the spring.

shevia - Thanks! I can sometimes get away with polyester in looser, less clingy tops, but not if I layer them and I'm realizing I want more versatility and less rashes out of my wardrobe. :)

Maneera - I'm going to look for silk crossover tops! I really like the look. The issue for me is less the feel of the fabric and more the heat retention. Denim > utility for me too. I also really want a denim shirt, but that one wasn't the right one.

Oooh....fun photos!

I love the denim jacket on you.....definitely a worthy addition to your wardrobe. The drapey cardigan looks very good....you look very comfortable and happy in that....kind of how one should look in clothes they like :)

Love the layering fun photo. You wear denim shirts well too! I love that utility jacket on you as well.....but if I had to choose, the denim would win.

I hear you on the polyester-rayon fabrics, though the crossover top in burgundy is gorgeous on you. Since I layer crossover tops over a cotton cami (their open neckline requires one on me), they aren't all that uncomfortable. I used to have a crossover top in cotton....never maintained its shape. Love the style of #8 too.

Overall, I think you did really well!

Love the jeans jacket on you. Also the crossover top in burgundy - I am a sucker for those. Mine are also man-made fibers but I find them less clingy than other tops. Also really like #8 - perhaps a style stretch but worth trying?

Style Fan - I think I probably will go back for the denim jacket, maybe not until next month. This is definitely a wardrobe hole for me and a denim jacket is on my list.

smittie - Some polyesters feel almost silk-like to me, but like Brooklyn, I run hot and I find it really uncomfortable to wear.

E - I think I agree with you on the drapey blouses. I feel better in them than in the stiffer fabrications too. I think I like more structure on bottom and in toppers, but comfort and drape in my tops. I also think I like shorter tops or tops with interesting hemlines that don't need tucking. I appreciate the tucked look, I just don't like doing it. So glad I'm able to benefit from your wisdom. Thank you!

Shelly - Thanks!

Word Lily - I am not surprised you liked the most boho of the looks. :)

Brooklyn - That very justification is why I own three sleeveless poly tops right now! I not only run hot, but am prone to heat rash, so I've decided to draw a line in the sand. I live in a climate that requires year-round layering (even right now, we have a 40° F differential, day to night) and I can't layer poly tops in a comfortable way. I think we have a lot of color preferences in common, so I've been watching your WIWs with delight!

Go team burgundy!!!
I really like both the utility jacket and the denim jacket on you (prefer the one on the right). I think it could be justifiable to get both if you don't care for denim on denim (ie utility jacket for jeans, denim jacket for other pieces).
The 3 poly tops are fantastic on you. I wanted them myself until you said they were poly - I have the same aversion. For me it's because I run hot - is it the same for you? I just mention this because sometimes I can tolerate poly if it's sleeveless. But I still try to avoid it if I can. The style is good on you though.
I love the FP knit too.

The jean jacket is good! (Yes, I know there are two of them, and I'd probably get the all cotton one too, but shape wise they're pretty close. I think I like the color of the Levi's one better too.)

I agree with E that I wish the utility jacket was a couple inches longer on you. (I have a utility jacket and a jean jacket, and I wear the utility jacket more, fwiw. But both get a lot of use.)

I also like the plaid pants and the Free People cardi.

And share your frustration with all the synthetic clothes. There are definitely some good shapes for you in the other tops, if you can find them in better fabrics.

Hi,
I love the utility jacket.
I love the cross-over v-neck Ann Taylor top on you, rather than the others with a high neck. Keep looking because the style suits you.
I love the last dotty blouse for the same reason, How you style the hem by tucking and the open buttons is very flattering.
I don't think we can ever go wrong with a striped T and a denim jacket. I have worn that look for about 40 years and it never goes out of fashion.

Oooh, now I understand! It was experiment shopping. Everything becomes clear & I shall offer lots of unsolicited advice in case any of it is helpful. :)

I like the Levi jacket a lot too, as long as you'll wear it although it doesn't have stretch. I also like the line created by that little semituck in the striped top vs with the other denim jacket (which I also think flatters you), where the shirt is going straight across.

You look very at-home in the utility jacket, but somehow I want it to be just a few inches longer in that outfit. You also wear drape beautifully, as shown by that cardigan in 4! I like the relaxed layering of that vs the more buttoned up layering of the 3rd J Crew outfit. And I love the lines of the burgundy polyster blouse too, as well as the softness of the print one. That slightly more open necklines on the burgundy sleeveless top & mustard button down are very flattering. I also like the way the mustard button down drapes more than the stiffer denim/chambray button down. Since I know looking approachable is one of your goals, you might consider prioritising softer/drapey fabrics? Maybe that's just my personal idea of approachability though.

Since I know you want a smaller closet, to my eye the denim & utility jackets fill the same role (rugged, casual, transitional weather topper), whereas a drapey cardigan would add more variety to your toppers, for what that's worth. And would look very good with those plaid skinnies. ;)

In sum, I think you should pursue drapey tops for skinnies, just in case I hadn't made that clear already. hehe

(I agree with you on the print of 8. I wear some very very girly things, lol, but even I would not feel comfortable in lopsided hearts! What a shame.)

A lot to take in.
Really like the levi's jean jacket.
Is polyester on your list of 'no's'?
They always look nice (and continue to look nice) but there is something about the feel that I don't like, which has been enough for me to not reach for the item. That's just me though.

Everything looks great on you though. I think I prefer colour near your face.

I love the Levis jean jacket on you. I am a denim nut though. It is too bad the tops were polyester some of them were great. Good colours.
Field/Utility jackets seem to be very popular this fall. I am considering one.
I find a lot of Free People sweaters are not wool or have very little wool in them. I have one but it is my trendy piece.

Staysfit - I will be looking for items similar to the Ann Taylor tops in silk or viscose, maybe. Polyester often gives me a rash if it's hot out or if I layer over it, and I'm finally learning to just not buy it.

E - That first photo is just what I tried on! I only bought the one top in the Finds. Normally, I wouldn't have tried on the polyester tops either, but I knew I was shopping mostly just to try things on, so I grabbed them knowing they wouldn't be keepers. Also, if the tail of that top in #8 had been plaid or something else I liked (instead of bizarre heart-like shapes?) I might have bought it. It was actually cotton!

You look really great in a lot of these looks-- it is a really good year for your color palette so I hope that you get some great shopping in this year. I love the top you bought-- especially with the flannel.

I definitely think you should hunt down an utility jacket.

Oh fun! I don't even try polyster tops on anymore, so I won't be tempted; to me the worst is finding a dress that's just right & made out of some yummy natural fiber, only to discover it has a polyster lining. As if petroleum hadn't caused enough problems in the world. ;)

Anyway, is #1 what you bought? At first I thought so, but then I see some of the poly tops that you rejected in there. What ended up coming home?

I really like the length of the blouse in 8, or maybe it's the curved hem, but something about it seems to go really well with skinnies on you. Not saying you should get it, just that you might want to be on the look out for that style!

I love those plaid skinnies on you too. And the colours are perfect for your wardrobe!

Wow! You did great! I call any shopping trip where you come home with even one item a success even if you tried on dozens. I love your color palette, it's very flattering with your skin and hair. I particularly like the look of the Ann Taylor Factory shirts and agree that it's too bad they weren't in a fabric you liked. I would love to see you try to duplicate them in some other way if you can because these look fabulous on you!

I finally got a chance to spend several hours shopping today, so I hit the local Macy's, along with the J.Crew, Ann Taylor, and Levi's outlets. I ran out of time and patience before I could check the shops at the other end of the shopping center, so that'll have to be another day.

I took photos of everything I tried on, but I won't bother posting the many misses. I grabbed all kinds of things I wouldn't normally try, but these are some that came close. My focus was tops I can wear with skinny jeans.

Photo #1 - All the things. I think I did a pretty good job staying in my color scheme!

Photo #2 - Utility jacket almost. I thought this was cute, but it wasn't on my list.

Photo #3 - Denim jackets. The first one, from Macy's house brand, was crazy comfortable, due to a high stretch component. Second was Levi's. Not as stretchy, but 100% cotton and I like the look better. Comparable prices, so I'll probably go back for the Levi's one.

Photo #4 - Free People sweater. I was surprised to kind of like this on me, but it was a rayon-polyester blend and seemed fragile. I dunno what's up with the pose. Those sleeves made me goofy.

Photo #5 - Loooooooved these Kut leggings. LOVED. So comfortable and PLAID. They weren't on my list, but I'm still thinking about them as a replacement for the Old Navy plaid pixies that I hate.

Photo #6 - Three tops that probably would have come home with me if they weren't all polyester. The first one is J.Crew Factory. The rest were Ann Taylor Factory. Stupid polyester factory stores. Actually, the middle one had a back made from a rayon-polyester blend, which was somewhat tempting, but I wasn't sure just how much it would breathe.

Photo #7 - Layering fun at J.Crew. I did bring one striped layering tee home.

Photo #8 - Kind of liked this, but also kind of not my style.

Photo #9 - Ditto, but also polyester.

What do y'all think? Any looks I should explore more?

ETA #10 - The striped tee in the Find and this photo was the only thing I bought. It's lower contrast than the linen striped tee I wore to shop...graphite and off-white instead of navy and optic. Shown with a flannel from my wardrobe and my new browline glasses. I probably would have grabbed the same tee in the mustard colorway, as well, but they were out in my size. Still might. They gave me a free shipping/discount coupon, should I decide to order online.
