OMG, Murpheleven! Almost spewed red wine with that one! I have 3 BR sleeveless button up shirts that came out of the dryer 2 years ago. They hung in the laundry room hoping I would figure out how to iron them until I put them in the Goodwill bag about a week ago! Still like them, but I am just a wash and wear girl at heart. So looking forward to your reports!

My August challenge: iron and wear the 5 summer items still hanging in the laundry room since last September! Extra credit: keep them ironed and ready to wear thru the rest of the season.

Here's my tentative plan for my August challenge:

1. Decide on a new hairstyle and go for a cut. It's time.

2. Take at least 2 WIW pics per week and ask for feedback.

3. Try on at least 4 items in a silhouette

Here's my tentative plan for my August
challenge:

1. Decide on a new hairstyle and go
for a cut. It's time.

2. Take at least 2 WIW pics per week and ask
for feedback.

3. Try on at least 4 items in a
silhouette different from items I currently wear. I’m trying to try styles recommended for my
body type that are a bit outside the shapes I’m normally drawn to and determine if I really like them on me. As an example, Angie’s and the other article
I read on dressing an hourglass recommend bootcut pants, which it normally not
a silhouette I have liked on me in the past.
I also want to try some flowy/oversize tops and see if I can get them to
work for me.

4.
Skirts/dresses- I would like to wear a skirt/top or dress at least twice
this month as I’ve mostly been wearing pants this summer.

5.
Continue to work on defining my style in terms I can explain to someone
else. I feel that I can generally look
at an item and know if it’s my style or not, but explaining why or why not to
someone else is much harder for me.

Laura, I love the "wear everything" challenge.

Debbie, sounds like a beautiful month for you...a breath of fresh air for the Texas heat:-)

Shedev, it's going to be so interesting to follow you through this process!

Great challenge, Kiwigal! I hope we'll get lots of dressing room pics when you go "dress style" shopping.

Oh Lucy! I don't know how you can possibly wear your Winter things when its 27C/80F! Definitely shave those legs and bring out the sandals. You do have quite the challenge.

Amiable, you have some great challenges this month! Moving into your new home after 6 years of renovation is SO EXCITING!

Jenn, yes! Mindful shopping is so much easier in theory than it is in reality (at least for me)! Looking forward to your reports.

Jude, what a satisfying challenge! I imagine you'll finish the month happier than ever with your closet!

I've just had my colours re-done since my hair is now so silvery grey. I'm still a cool winter, but my choices are a tiny bit tighter now. I've also strayed a bit from my colour tribe over the years, oops, so I've removed everything from my closet and drawers that isn't in my palette. I've put them in the "holding area", along with a few items that are my colours but don't make me feel happy. I have a strong tendancy to veer toward prissy which is not me at all (I hope!) so those items are out too. I do have a couple of wardrobe holes now so if I happen to see any great sale items I'll grab them, but I'm not really on the hunt.
So my challenge for the month is to wear only the items left that are my best colours and happiest styles, I have a couple of short trips coming up so I'm interested to see if packing will be easier. Should be fun! Thanks Carter, this couldn't have come at a better time!

My challenge is to shop mindfully for missing essentials. August is my birthday month, which means I usually do a bit of extra pampering. This year, I want to make sure I shop carefully so I don't buy things I end up having to purge in a month or two.

I will:
1. Try on multiple silhouettes to make sure the list I made is the best fit for my life and style.
2. Only buy pieces with natural fibers and quality construction--this one is going to be hard for me. I'm easily swayed by the look of a piece and sometimes overlook the elements that actually make it wearable.
3. Purchase from my list to fill actual wardrobe holes rather than incorrectly perceived holes.
4. Continue to photograph daily outfits so I can track wears and see evolution.

I haven't read the other responses yet, and my August looks to be extra busy, so I'm setting a simple challenge for myself.

My wardrobe holes (discovered during June Challenge) are plugged (that was the July challenge), and I'm wearing my clothes frequently, repeatedly, and even wearing some out. My wardrobe is working very well.

My challenge for July will be to wear everything in my summer wardrobe, and photo what's new to me (and assess their fit and wearability if I haven't already. I also want to photo new combinations (outfits that aren't repeats).

My shopping challenge is to get a pair of shoes for Fall (preferably oxfords that I can walk and stand in for at least 14 hours) in. I have two contenders at home already, and have to decide yet whether either is suitable.

My in-real-life challenge is to be moved to our new house (the one we've been renovating for over 6 years) by the end of the month!

So, my challenge got off to a "challenging" start today! My goal was to wear my more wintery clothes for another month, before breaking out the summer stuff for the next 9 months or so!
It was a good plan, until today peaked at 27 degrees Celsius - definitely warm weather, lol. I did my best, and didn't break out the real summery gear. I stuck to a dark denim skirt, which is too warm for much of the year, and a three quarter sleeved knit cardi, which I would only wear in summer as a topper in aircon. But I simply had to break out the sandals, and if it's not too much information, shave my legs :)

Okay...my challenge has elements of a few others...

1) Wear every winter appropriate dress or skirt at least once and take a photo. A couple of them have had reasonable use but one skirt and one dress have been unworn (until today). Decide if any need to be moved on.
2) Wear a couple of tops that also have not been worn, and photograph them as well. I think there are two, and they are more dressy fabrications. But what the heck, I am just going to wear them anyway.
3) Go dress shopping and try on some different silhouette dresses.

If I lack inspiration I will also look at ensemble for ideas on colour combinations.

Sterling, I did do a cull and refresh of jeans and tried on all the things that interested me. I looked up the rules of the 5 piece wardrobe and definitions on what is a basic (this didn't help me a whole lot) Other peoples lists of basics didn't help me much either. Essentially I'm a boot girl, so a basic for me would be bottoms that are worn with boots. Tops would be things I could layer under some kind of topper.

The end of NAS was the beginning of the 5PW for me. I do have a sweater I may need to size down on. I did a refresh, especially of jeans. In addition to the finds, I bought AE dark denim, DL 1961black camo, and grey Kut ponte knit. I purged 9 pairs, including a few of too small pairs. It hurt, but I feel like a burden has been lifted.

Some guidelines for my 5, need to match my persona, be different from what I have now, and for FW I'm just sticking to the 5 without buying anything extra as basics. If I make it to spring, I will be likely to buy a couple basics.

Carter reading about your rationale and organized approach is so relaxing! I am more the emotional and haphazard type of wardrobe manager. I think my challenge this month will really only begin with the suitcase of clothing I have ordered from NAS and other places and I need to choose dresses for my son's bar mitzvah. Meanwhile I will try to take some outfit pictures that actually fit to print.

The last two weeks I want to wear a dress at least one day a week and summer tops and lots of white the last two. I work in a very casual office so my summer collection of dresses has not been worn but tomorrow I will start wearing them. I work 3 to 4 days a week so we will see how I do. Also I want to try to do something different with my hair and make up.

Lucy and Brooklyn, I hear you about trying to wear all the fun clothes during a very fleeting Winter. Enjoy!

Maneera, you have quite the month planned! It is amazing, though, how much more we can accomplish when the husband is traveling;-).

Suz! Eleven ensembles in 11 days? That is quite the challenge! Looking forward to it. Safe travels this month.

Beth Ann, I hope there are date night outfits in your immediate future!

Elly, I hope the scenario plan works as well for me as it did for you. It sounds like you also have big changes in the near future. How very exciting. Flexibility is your yardstick for your new purchases. I'm coming to see this as more and more important as well.

Ornella, you are looking so fab these days! Hope you'll join the challenge fun.

Go Team Wear, Sterling! Looking forward to your results.

Cheryl...a challenge after my own heart! I have some mistakes hanging around as well. You bring up another excellent point too. My gear capsule is not working terribly well for me. My challenge for next month, perhaps?

Sadie, I agree! In the 8 years my husband and I have been married, we have been to 3 black tie events. I wore a spiffed up LBD to one. One outfit was tuxedo pants and silk jacket. The last was satin pants and silk blouse. Also, that is some packing challenge you have planned! I can't even imagine...

Anne, I think that's a perfect challenge. You have some fabulous new things. Let's get them working for you!

Carter, you have your work cut out for you, but it does sound like you are primed for a very satisfactory cull!
I have enjoyed reading though everyone's challenge.
Like Beth Ann, I was going to say that I am too busy. The church my husband pastors is for university students, and term starts tomorrow and so do lots of associated activities. So I'll just keep on with what I have started, showing you the clothes from Deborah and Suz, and getting your lovely advice about whether to keep them, and if so, how to style them. I am going pretty slow, so perhaps trying to get them all done in August will be an incentive.

I would go through all your old formal dresses, heavy coats, blazers, and tennis skirts and get rid of (1) any with stains or holes (2) those whose style days are past, (3) those who don't fit well (or don't fit "you"- maybe spaghetti straps are no longer a look you want to wear? Also- do these dresses even work now with your new post-surgery shoe requirement?)- then pick 2 or 3 of the best in each group to store in another closet (or you can just get rid of the whole lot cold turkey).

I got rid of similar items about 1 1/2 years ago when I went crazy-minimal and it's been fine. We still attend about 4-5 "black tie" events a year, but a cocktail dress accessorized "up" has been appropriate in every case. (Please (!) tell me if I am wrong, but it seems many women are wearing knee-length dressy-dresses to these events- galas, weddings, charity events, etc) I have 4 dresses (2 Trina Turk, 1 Ella Moss, 1 silk print I got in Hong Kong last year) that go easily from dressy dinner evening to black tie event. Unless I end up as either the honoree or host of a gala (very unlikely!), I really don't see the need for ball gowns or long formal wear (side note: my husband has a tux and that was one of the best purchases as he gets a lot of wear from it each year).

My challenge this month is to hone my active/travel capsule as we leave for Africa in 2 1/2 weeks and I have to pack 2 weeks of clothes, gear, personal items, and tech stuff (iPad, binoculars, etc) in a small back pack with a weight limit of 15 pounds!

What a great idea Carter - personalized challenges with a bit of accountability thrown in.

I agree with Suz and Elizabeth on the weather. It has been very hot and humid here but I am trying to enjoy it as much as possible because I know winter will be here much sooner than any of us would like it to be.

I am going to make my challenge to clean out the closet and only keep items that I wear or have hope of wearing. I have a few mistakes hanging in the closet that for some reason I haven't purged for two years at least. Although the top I wore yesterday was among them, the others don't have the redeeming qualities. Why did I think grey would work on me???

So my challenge is to make room for the stuff I wear by clearing out the stuff I don't wear and organizing all of my running/walking/exercising gear and putting it in the spare room armoire.

This is an absolutely wonderful challenge. I will so look forward to hearing everyone's achievements. I am especially interested in two aspects of the challenge: Shedev's future 5 piece French wardrobe and the effect that future transitions will have on wardrobes.

The 5 piece French wardrobe is fascinating to me because I have achieved (for the first time ever) a closet where that type of shopping makes a lot sense. Without a solid base wardrobe, I don't think it was ever a consideration.

I will watch with fascination posts related to dresses. I have only worn dresses when "forced to do so by circumstances." I can't even imagine a situation where I would actually choose to do so. In fact, I only own one dress. It is the dress I wear to "special events" like weddings and office parties. It is very form fitting and I rarely feel comfortable in it. My posture is better though and the right amount of formality seems to be achieved. I secretly hate it.

My challenge is to wear sleeveless tops and to make them my signature piece during the month of August. I really like this idea because I am so comfortable in sleeveless tops. I went through my closet yesterday evening and I have 10 sleeveless tops that range from casual to dressy. Because I constantly cull my closet all 10 of these tops are rated as "favorites." I literally want to wear them.

I will wear all 10 tops a minimum of twice this month. Some will get worn more often. Certain ones will become even more loved. I am guessing that will be determined by color more then anything else. I am thrilled with the Nic and Zoe tank tops I bought during NAS. They fit perfectly and the colors are muted. I find these muted colors really appealing to me this year. One is even orange. I thought it was red when I bought it, but it is orange. I opted to keep it anyway. This will be the first ever orange item in my wardrobe. I am excited at the prospect of a new color.

Carter-- I love your personal challenge. I totally understand the compulsion to keep things for the options, the what ifs, the freedom that you could get up and "do anything" tomorrow and be kitted out to do it. What I've been learning, though, is that for me the fewer unused, unloved things I have cluttering my life the more freedom I actually have.

Suz challenged me to play with the scenario exercise last year around this time and (thinking about it) it might be useful to revisit -- I used it more to make sure that I had my most important bases covered and cover as many as possible lightly while trying to stretch wardrobe building dollars. I'm sure it is just as valuable while editing in the other direction, however. I'll keep it in mind as I evaluate my NAS pieces and anything else I happen to purchase in August.

My challenge for August is 3 fold. My contract ends September 30th and my SO and I are considering moving within the next year. Depending on how the job hunt goes I might be in a new state with a similar climate, in a somewhat warmer climate, wearing a uniform while traveling doing temporary work, or working locally in a more casual (jeans and tee shirt) or less casual (public facing office) position and I will still be doing some volunteering. I can't not shop, but want to do my best not to over-shop and to make versatile choices (that can be dressed up or down) or those that will have longevity (I always manage to wear out jeans, knit jackets, and flannel shirts).

1) I need to evaluate all the purchases I made in July (mostly at NAS, but also from a GAP order and a pair of shoes) and make decisions about keeping each item. Usually I like to re-evaluate them for fit, make sure they play nice with what is already in my closet, run things by the SO, and possibly post some pictures on the forum as well as evaluate how well each piece functions for me and what should stay on my shopping list for fall.

2) Figure out the shoe situation. Summer shoes are a bane of mine. I will start another thread, but I have two possible pairs and two more on the way. I'm really hoping that I've found a pair of summer slip on sneakers and, if so, will wear them (probably several times a week) and evaluate if a leather pair would be a valuable addition to my fall wardrobe. The other possible pair needs some forum help-- so far I'm smitten, but the color I wanted isn't available in my size and the others are a reach for me. In fact, the style is pretty daring. If those don't work, I REALLY need to get hunting for a dressy shoe that is gallery appropriate but workable. I'm also experimenting with the new Nike-air insoled converse and signature Jack Purcells. I've recently figured out that I may be wearing the wrong size in Cons and want to see if I can manage a more comfortable fit.

3) Get a haircut. I want my hairdresser to experiment with a variation on my regular cut. She has been my stylist for 12 years and I want to either freshen up my look of a little over 2.5 years or let her make a change before or if I have to move, rather than breaking someone else in on something new.

I am focused on getting my kids settled in their schools -- and I think it will be challenge enough for 3 months, but I'm brainstorming a challenge I might be able to do once a week. I think I need something to remind me that I'm a happy mom, but more than a mom!

Carter, the time is right for your challenge and you sound 100% ready for it. I suspect you're going to make some amazing discoveries this month and they will prepare you for your upcoming move and all the other transitions you're facing like nothing else. Wow.

And I can't wait to see how you incorporate Angie's extras! ;)

Love hearing about the other challenges people are setting for themselves. There are some fun ideas and smart plans here.

Like Janet, I'm going to be travelling for quite a lot of the month. So part of my challenge will be to devise a capsule for the trip. That won't be too difficult.

For the days that I am around, I'd like to experiment with some of Angie's ensembles. There's a backlog of great summery outfits I haven't yet tried, and trying them out would encourage me to wear some different combinations. In the process I will also "de-orphan" some orphans.

For some reason i feel as if I haven't really been wearing my clothes this summer. That's crazy talk -- of course I've been wearing my clothes; I could hardly be running around bare naked! -- but I guess my life has been so topsy-turvy, the weather before I left for China was still (largely) so un-summery, I haven't been out socially since June, and, well, I haven't even been here since June, either, and now I'm about to go off again!

However, between times, I can play with the ensembles. I've got 11 that I want to try, which is more or less the number of days in August I'll be in the vicinity of home.

That sounds like a great challenge Carter. I am currently renovating so most of my clothes are in storage and it will be a while before I can do a serious closet stocktake.
My goal is similar to Lucy's. Make the most of what's left of our short winter to wear my nice winter clothes, especially knit dresses. I have quite a few! It is mid winter here but 24 degrees today. So I am back in summer gear today!

Thanks for organizing a Challenge month, Carter!

I really associate with your post. My guest room closet still contains pieces that are from a previous/imaginary lifestyle. Too many structured office-wear dresses, skirts and blazers. I have pared it down a bit, but I'm lost on how to go ahead. I'm yet another Queen of 'what ifs....' and 'someday....' And 'you just never know when you need something'.....

HOWEVER, this year, I've done better than before and many of these dresses have actually been worn with flat sandals, printed scarf and cute tote to take them into 'casual yet polished' territory. I hope that will continue.

I've mentioned my August challenge in another thread but here it is again. It's a Wear What You Love Month for me along with SYC. I've altered my goals a bit:

1) Wear ALL of your dresses Atleast twice more before summer is over. It's the only way I would be able to gauge what stays and what can be donated by the time I pack summer clothes.

2) Wear whatever brings you joy. If skirts feel 'forced', don't wear them. Same for button downs or say capris. I have too many different silhouettes in clothes. I *think* I love them all....but do I? I want to pick out my favourites so my wardrobe can be simplified and I weed out everything that no longer works for my style before summer ends.

3) Incorporate Atleast 1 wardrobe orphan a week and create an outfit lab exercise where needed. I don't think those orphans can find a place in my wardrobe without help from all you lovely ladies on the forum.

4) Accessorize better. I want scarves to turn into my signature piece. However, this is not always possible, so necklaces will come into play too.

5) Figure out my shoe collection!!!! I owned over 100 pairs of shoes before I joined YLF. Over the last 3 months, I've removed about 35 but I did add a couple of sandals. I'm at a point where I LOVE all my sandals and they are serving me very very well this summer. I have happy, pretty feet. But then again, ALL sandals I'm wearing and loving this summer are bought this summer only. The older footwear is still sitting in its boxes....rarely coming out. The good news is that I've culled all uncomfortable heels....shoes that suited my imaginary lifestyle and not the real one. But I still have too too many shoes and I need to make some decisions before I store away my shoes for winter. I wear only sneakers and boots in winter because I dislike socks showing in bellies or any low vamp closed shoe.

Phew.....that's a lot to do this month. But my husband is traveling almost all month and I'm all by myself, so I have plenty of time to whip my wardrobe into shape and get rid of all other clutter in my house.

My goal for this month is to wear as many of my winter/autumn clothes as I can. Winter here is very very short, probably less than a month, with a bit of autumnal weather at each side! It is starting to warm up already. So I'd like to get as much wear out of my cool weather clothes as I can, before I am back to the long, long summer...

Linda, it sounds like you have a productive month coming up!

Shedev, I am so eager to see how you and Deborah interpret and handle the 5 piece wardrobe. Talk about a challenge! Are you making any preparations this month? Purging? Tailoring? Rearranging the closet? Do you have a list of *your* basics? Can you tell I'm interested?;-)

Carolbee, I so needed to hear the story about your mom's gowns! Thanks so much for sharing that. You are so very right about all that "stuff". Yes, I have essentially retired. I will still accept a bit of work here and there for long time clients, and of course, I'll handle the sale of my house next year, but that's it. My husband sold his company in January and retired June 30 after his 6 month required transition period. My son will be heading off to college next Summer. As soon as I get him settled in at school, we are so outta here! We are moving to the beach. Oddly enough, we will be less than a mile from the house my FIL is selling next week. He's moving back to Cleveland. We will still know a couple people there, but not necessarily folks we will hang out with. I've done "know nobody" moves twice before (DC and Houston) and made great friends both places. It's an exciting adventure!

Sterling, I think the post-NAS timing of your sleeveless top challenge is perfect. Go Team Wear!

Carter, I always love reading your posts, you have a great wardrobe. Your current casual lifestyle and thus clothes to match are very similar to my requirements. I look forward to watching your progress through the month.

I would encourage you to get rid of all the "stuff" that no longer fits your lifestyle and that you are unlikely to wear in the future. My mother had two spare closets full of mostly long dresses etc from wearing to balls and after she died they were all sent to goodwill (not sure if anyone would want them, but couldn't just toss them in the bin). It seemed a waste of time and space that she had hauled them about through several moves, when she hadn't been to a ball for at least 30 years!!

You have mentioned a couple of times that you are not working at the moment and a major move is on the cards next year. Did I miss a post? Are you retired/retiring? Is the move a long way and do you know anyone where you are moving to? I ask because we are starting to consider a move to the other side of Oz and would have to create a whole new life as we would not know anyone there, that idea is a bit daunting.
