Thats an excellent idea to get a blouse pattern to re-cut the armhole. I think you are right, it has got distorted. You have your back-up plan to make it sleeveless if that fails.

Diane, I did take in the side seam, too, so there are no excess width in the armhole, but I think I distorted the shape. I think I have a blouse pattern somewhere, and will try to recreate the armhole shape with it. Or make it sleeveless if it is a better solution.

You could use the sleeve fabric to make a facing or a binding to create a sleeveless blouse.

Ahh I can see whats happened now. If you take it off the sleeve head you are making it smaller yet the armhole as you move inwards has got bigger. I expect you now have bubbling of extra fabric around the armhole. It's a job I do a lot for customers. I've done it on jackets too.

Uh-oh. I already took a little off the sleeve head, Diane. Not as much as 1/2", though, more like 1/4. I think I could alter the body and resew the sleeve once more. Darts sounds useful, too. I'll see if I can have a few pics taken, but the blouse is in pieces at the moment, so I'm not sure if they will make sense. Thank you!

Karie, this is exactly what I'm trying to do. I think it still is possible to fix it. If everything fails, I'll make it sleeveless. That could look good, too.

I'd have to see a pic of the blouse on you to see how it fits, but if you mean the shoulders are dropped down too far, you might have to remove the arms and re-sew them in the correct location. It's not hard, but if you don't have experience doing this, you might want to take it to a tailor.

Hmm... you know when you say you took1/2" off around the shoulder seam, did you just go right around the armhole seam taking it of both sleeve and body together?; because You must always re-set the sleeve-head onto the body moving it inwards without taking any off the sleeve-head at all. This involves removing most of the sleeve to re-set it. As for the extra room in the body at the front I think I would probably need to see a pic of you in it. You may need some darts strategically positioned. You coul pm me with a pic if you like. or pop one on here.

I really don't know enough about sewing to offer any personal advice. All I know is when I asked a very good tailor about adjusting the shoulders on a jacket she looked at me like I was crazy. Not saying it can't be done, but I'm guessing its really difficult, and/ or not worth the time/money. That said, I would think a blouse would be a lot easier to alter than a jacket, if it is doable.

Dear all,
I've inherited a blouse from my Grandmother that is too wide across the shoulders, and too big in general. I tried to take it in by shaving off about 1/2"of the side seams and around the sleeve/shoulder seam. Now it fits in the body, but the shoulder is still too wide, and it looks strange and roomy in front. Any ideas on how to solve this? I find it difficult to understand if I can remove the excessive fabric, or if I should try other options.

Any advice appreciated!
