Thanks Angie - you are confirming my suspicions. Like velvet, I can't shake this feeling I'm taking a step back, not forward. I will look forward to the next MOTG post on this topic! I really love the comfort of these pants, so I want to be able to get some use out of them. I find I wear the gray pair far more often.

What about a black trousers that are part of a suit?

I don't have to wear a suit to work, but I am increasingly meeting more and more people in a corporate environment (bankers, hedge funders etc) and I would like a suit to wear. I am meeting people who are 20 or 30 years my senior and I feel like I need to look a bit more grown up.

Ideally a nice pair of trousers with matching jacket and then I would wear a shirt underneath. Should I go for black or should I go for dark grey? I am wary of pinstripes as I have broad shoulders and I think of pin stripes as masculine.

Maybe this is a whole other post?

For what it's worth, I'm watching this post with keen interest, as I've also been guilty of the black pant rut. Would love to hear any other tips you'd care to share, Angie!

Thank you Angie - I'm going to return the two pairs of plain black dress pants I just bought. I had a bad feeling about them. They fit nicely and are flattering on my body, but I felt like I was going backward in time or something - my old 'uniform' was always black dress pants and a sweater. I was thinking I needed to replace some basics, and black dress pants were always my fallback option if I had to get a bit more dressed up.

So, dress pants are still 'good' if they have a bit of a texture or a stripe?

I did buy some black jeans - but they are bootcut. Still haven't found a pair of skinnies that will work on me.

Looking forward to the blog post about black ponte pants. Tried some on, didn't think they looked very good, but am definitely interested - they felt so comfortable on!

Thank you too shiny - this was a good question to ask! Now, onto the ponte pants.

(Queenie, there is a thrift-ing post in the works by the YLF thrift queen herself).

VC and Shiny, black pants (slacks) are problematic and “old-looking”. There is no doubt in my mind ! I can’t actually remember the last time I popped a client into basic black pants.

Rule number one is to find black bottoms with interesting texture – black jeans are an instantly good idea and to Marianna’s point. Pinstripe pants and fabric with sheen are another excellent idea. I have those and find that they offer a lot more oomph (I have black jeans too).

Ponte pants are a great option and operate like black skinny jeans or super thick leggings. The problem comes in with the colour though. Blue jeans look great with black and grey tops but black and grey tops with black Ponte are a hit or miss. The next MOTG formula is all about black Ponte pants so stay tuned for that this week.

I wear black jeans all the time, and I treat them just like blue jeans. I guess black jeans aren't the same thing as black pants though...

I am very interested in the 'black pants' question too! I bought some, but fear my old black pants and a sweater rut. How can you make black pants look fab?

Angie, can you do a blog on how to wear black pants?

As you read on the style evolution thread, my uniform used to include nothing but black dress pants - day after day. YLF cured me of that. But, now I have these great black ponte knit straight legs, which are just so comfy! I really want to get more wear out of them - but fear I am rapidly falling back into the "boring" uniform rut again. :-(

Maybe it is the pants that are the problem? If not, I could really use some inspiration!
