I am not a total believer that we all fit neatly into one of these constraints....if you don't believe you fit neatly and don't like a good proportion of the colours I wouldn't use it...The system helps people who like to be able to base a wardrobe around it/coordinate colours etc..

I feel you do have a good handle on the colours that work for you, and that work together....and you can wear a good range of colours successfully. I think avoiding too much warmth, and colours that are muddy would be constraint enough. I avoid colours that are too cool and too muddy and aside from that I don't worry too much.

Hi Ginger --

With one exception, I agree with your yeas/nays -- but either way, encourage you not to worry too much about the category labels, just explore the boundaries of light/dark, warm/cool, saturation levels etc -- especially as there's not ONE personal color system.

Your ancestry = familiar (hi sunscreen) and as someone who can take no warmth I'm always amazed at how much comparative warmth a couple of them can take. There are a fair number of truly cool "overlap" shades we share because those best shades of mine are at the edge of their cool tolerance.

For instance, your coral, pink, and kelly green are all warm-leaning colors; while mid-tones, they also have a lightness and energy to them that I'd let be my benchmark. Ditto for the royal blue, though that's a mid-dark.

Could someone analyzed one of the "springs" in one of the zillion systems wear those shades? Maybe, but who cares -- YOU can wear them, and look good in them.

As mentioned earlier, I love both the Pink and Vintage Pink on you...though would use the latter as suggested if you feel like it...I think you respond to the energy of the deeper pink and benefit from its contrast, so best to keep it in small doses if desired.

Ginger, after being told by someone that I'm a Spring, I tried the palette and had the same exact issues you're having. I'm now mostly wearing Cool/True Summer colors, and feel a lot better. Winter didn't work, and Soft Summer wasn't quite right. I agree with you that you have to pay close attention to the neutrals!

The single biggest problem I have with adopting with any spring is the neutrals. They're all quite warm: off white, cream, tan, beige, etc. Plus peach. I did my best to show those neutrals in the third batch. #2 and #3 are taken with the sun out, and they still look draining to me. I feel flat and colorless. I do not feel fabulous in those colors. And gold is not a good metal for me. How can I be a spring if those building-block neutrals are so terrible? Plus all of my reds. Tomato is a spring red, and it's too warm for me. (I still love the dress and will wear it, adjusting makeup and lip color! Doesn't mean I can't recognize it's not the best color.)

FWIW, the white picture (#1 in batch 3) is not a good one; I can tell the sun was quite dim at that moment, and the white itself is translucent so my skin shows through.

The contrast between the rich pink and the vintage peach in #7 and #9 in the first batch seems pretty striking to me. With the pink, my skin looks clear and light, and brings out my natural lip color. The peach seems brings out warmth, especially in my hair and eyebrows, but at the cost of flattening my skin and clashing with my lips. It's not the worst look in the world, but I don't think it's the best one.

I'm sorry to sound so resistant to Spring and your help... but honestly, I am! The fact that I can wear a number of more typical Spring colors and make them look pretty decent doesn't mean that Spring is the best categorization for me. I really love my cool reds and blues and true white, and I think they love me. I wore a couple of cream-colored sweaters for years because they were all I could find; but the contrast between that and my one white sweater was amazing. I feel so bland and Not Me in cream.

*sigh*

I thought you had red hair too. I'm no good at figuring this out. Still, it looks to me like your coloring is cool.

When I was in my 20s a SA at a store told me I was an Autumn. Now that my hair is grey, I think my coloring might be cool. So I don't know if my coloring changed, if the SA was wrong, or if I'm wrong now. I did enjoy wearing earth tones - olive, pumpkin, etc. Now I wear lots of grey and blue.

ETA: My hair was brown with lots of red highlights, and my eyes are hazel - olive and brown. I don't know, but my eye color may have changed too!

Ha! You're getting some varied answers here. I stand by my Clear Spring assessment (which I believe is the same thing as Bright Spring?). Many of these colors look good on you, but for the sake of this exercise...

From the first batch, I like 2, 4, 6, and 10 the most. Least favorite I think is 8.

Second batch, I like 2, 3, 6, and 8. Least favorites 10 and 11.

Third batch, I like #1 and the rose gold.

Hi again Ginger --

Based on your draping shots, I'll stand by my suggestions. Though these may show up on a "True Spring" palette, hard to tell without compare/contrast. Too much warmth doesn't seem to do you justice (aka the tomato) IMHO, anyway!

Just putting my votes for "best" colors below....Trying hard not to be envious as I love lots of these shades but they don't love me back!

BATCH 1

7. Pink
8. Coral
9. Vintage peach (this is stunning and matches your natural blush tones -- would be ideal for lingerie, a print, or in a blouse with one of your neutrals)

ETA Re 13 -- I feel like this is very close, but too orange; needs to be cooled off (reddened) a bit, but then what you call true red looks dark to me.

BATCH 2

1. Yellow
3. Kelly green
5. Light teal

ETA, c&p fail -- 8. Royal blue (fantastic!)

BATCH 3

5. Olive

8. Rose gold

Sally, this is very very helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to look! I could have written the words "mid range clear but not too bright". Colors just off primary color level of saturation make me very happy.

I just discovered rose gold last year (that very watch, from Charming Charlie) and I'm in love. It's warmer than silver, but isn't truly yellow like gold. <3

You are very kind! I took off my makeup before I did this. Well, not eye makeup, but the powder/blush/bronzer that I apply in the mornings.

Vix, thank you so much for mentioning that my hair "reads" cool. That makes perfect sense. Half the time in photos it does read a medium brown.

Toban, I had not seen that link! Thank you SO much. It makes so much sense. I believe there's a good bit of English and Scottish in my ancestry, too, so it's helpful for her to mention the English type.

That whole site was new to me, actually, and I did the quiz starting here.
http://www.thechicfashionista......sis-2.html
The first choice for dominant characteristic (deep-dark or light) doesn't work for me, but the second did (soft-muted or clear). You're supposed to stand in front of a mirror in natural light, and then notice your dominant characteristic. I was skeptical because it's nighttime and yellow home lights turn my coloring yellower/blander. And yet the dominant characteristic was clear, because of the high contrast between my skin and hair/eyebrows. (3 times, 3 different mirrors!) Clear and then cool resulted in Clear Winter, which flows into Clear Spring. Many of you picked up on the hint of warmth that a True/Cool Winter wouldn't have.

In looking at it again I think you suit similar colours to me although I am more olive (and ruddy/sun damaged). I colour my hair to blonde but am naturally light brown/very dark blonde. I look best in mid range colours that are clear....but I can wear black, ink blue quite well especially with makeup. I am worst in heathery grey, olive and optic white and I don't really like pastels on me especially if cool in tone. I think you wear berries better than I do though. You look lovely here in the white but it is not a cool white...

I see myself as a clear spring but I am very slack about it and wear all sorts of things.

Wowza!!

I started with the red pinks and thought - you can wear them all, but I have to say I liked 9 the least and 8 was a touch too warm. I really like 1-7.

With the blue/greens I prefer you in the mid range colours - I found 4 too dark, and was not as keen on 9 and 10. 1 2 3 6 and 7 are my favourites.

Of the neutrals I was least keen on the greys 4 and 5 and of the metals I like the rose gold.

You can wear a lot of colours and of course makeup and combinations make a huge difference too.

I think greyed lighter colours are the "worst" on you, and mid range clear but not too bright are the best. I love you in the light neutrals too.

You have lovely clear skin and eyes. And honestly the ones I liked the least (probably the light grey) is still very wearable!

I have been honest here - only my opinion too - so I am interested what others have to say.

Hi Ginger --

Based on your self-reporting and the photos, I'd explore Light Spring or Light Summer (neutral leaning warm or cool, respectively) or flow seasons (Winter leaning Spring, Spring leaning Summer). I can see why you say Bright Winter is just a bit too much on you, so those are the "dialed back" groups. Since you love greens and corals/watermelon on yourself I think you can safely move out of the True Summer/Winter zones...warmth is deadly there.

FWIW your hair reads cool despite the red. Mine is/was (greying) dark cool with red so I know what you mean...but it's the overall impression that matters.

Play around with your color combos and contrast, too. Lighter shades may need the oomph of your best mid- to dark-tones to really come alive on you.

You definitely look cool toned and that is probably why gold and yellows doesn't enhance you the way you want.
Silver is what would suit your skintone best, and when it comes to colors. OF COURSE, you can wear brights. But again, it has to do with undertone. You say you doesn't suit you very well, and obviously it's kind of hard to tell from a photo - but since your hair is darker I feel like it would give a good contrast.
Silver is what would suit your skintone best, and when it com
Everyone won't look good with the same red lipstick, because if you are cool you want to go with a more blueish-red and if you're warm you want to go for something with more orange in it - just as an example.

I think your wardrobe looks quite good, but I would think you suit the more muted and cool toned shirts better. For instance, baby pink/blue or white. A cream is usually more warmed toned, therefor it doesn't feel 100% right.
I think a bright red top would look amazing with your complexion! BUT be careful and find someone that does not hint orange.

Hmm. I have a green that's either kelly or emerald, pale blue, and coral. I don't have any other yellow besides that one, or teal that I can recall. Pretty much weeded them all out. I'll see what I can do!

I still see a very peaches and cream complexion in your latest picture. I want to see you in teals and emeralds and yellows. And pale blue. Yes to coral.

From the pictures, I agree with Liz A. That you look like a clear spring.

I think whites and beiges are very tricky anybody with pale skin, regardless of season.

Of course you know best and it's very hard to say with certainty about colours based in online pictures.

Interesting! I think I need to do a comparison of me in pink vs. coral or peach. Tan and beige are unequivocally no good, but they should be okay for a spring or autumn.

Another picture. There is some lamp light, which always adds yellow.

My impression was that you were a natural redhead, but I guess not.

That's interesting, Liz. Most of the Clear Spring neutrals specifically called out - cream, cafe noir, camel - are actually very meh on me. And the peach and ivory skin tones don't sound quite right. My skin tone is pink, not peach, even under yellow bathroom lights. It's quite a difference. But wow, I love the blues and most of the greens in that palette. And the hair and eyes are really close.

It is a puzzler, isn't it!

I do, Sterling, in pretty much all of them! Especially since these are the ones that made it through the wardrobe edit. That particular yellow, for example, is terrific. Maybe these random pictures would help... they have the best light of what I have handy.

I am also trying to figure this out. I have learned to wear colors that don't look well next to my face on my bottom half. I love a dark orange or hot pink but looks pretty bad next to my face. I am sure Angie can help with this question. By the way, the clothing in pics 3 and 4 arebeautiful. I kinda wish we could go back to that just once in a while!
