You have good shoulders, shoulders being a visual horizontal. I think featuring/playing up horizontal lines, which would be in keeping with the horizontal shoulder line, in your outfits could be a good thing.

Like, the high contrast between the light colour silky rayon top and darker red jeans makes for a strong horizontal line at the hem of the top, which echoes/showcases your shoulder line and athletic physique. I feel that's one of the things making that outfit so strong.

If say, you had on a red top with the red jeans, then an open cardi over that - you'd get a strong visual vertical line straight up the center. You miss the shoulders. You also get visually stretched out when you already have torso length, so it's kinda redundant.

In contrast, I'm super short in the torso and pretty much need to put on the rack... :D

My apologies for not returning to this thread for a while (2 days at work, one night early to bed with a headache and the other out)and thanks to everyone who contributed.
Texstyle thank you so much for going back through my posts and finding those ones. I am sure the shirt I got in the third picture has shrunk since that was taken (it is just rayon Rachylou, not silk). I think those maybe the only jeans I have that currently fit anyway! Not that is is cool enough to wear jeans much. There are wearing out sadly.
I do enjoy wearing skirts, but sadly many of the ones you have seen are currently not fitting
I have to admit that for most of my YLF time I did like fitted looks - now I'm not so sure!
I have been thinking of trying to find a day dress with the silhouette of the second link you picked out (as suggested by Beth Ann in that thread). I am not sure it is a priority (I have 2 other suitable office dresses) but I'd sure like one!

RL - I have a bit of a food baby - and I WEIGH as much as I did 4 months along! I am not sure I am understanding you about the shoulder line? Could you elaborate?
Kiwigirl - thanks for the empathy. I find trousers very hard!

Changing bodies are hard to deal with! I have a different shape but know how annoying it is to adapt and deal with changing fashions!

I loved you in the pink asymmetric top with your skirted leggings. That look was great on you. Dresses also suit you very well . I also think straight trousers or jeans rather than skinny. I have muscular legs too and whilst I wear skinnies I have to get a few elements right to make it work.

And as the others have said anything that highlights your hair and face is going to be a winning look!

Love the links texstyle picked out. That cream silky blouse in the third link is a total best buy, esp with the red pants. You have a pretty face, your *strong* shoulders are a strength, and you have good knees and ankles. Yes, I said good knees and ankles!

You are also not four months along with a food baby, like I am. Ahaha!

You know, I think you are a person who can do strong horizontal lines. I'm not sure if the monochromatic column of colour is your best friend... it doesn't value your shoulders enough.

IMHO, of course.

I looked back at some of your WIW posts and found several that do exactly what you said - flatter you in the best way (to my eye at least).

Here are a few I noticed: (note this is my opinion only and I'm no expert).

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....sual-cloth

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....dress-ever

http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/i-broke-syc

Sleeveless looks fantastic on you for one thing. It highlights your shoulder line, your lovely face and hair and balances you out. I also like a longer cut top on you as opposed to shorter tops.

I notice you have a lovely collection of skirts, pencil, a-line etc. Most of those look great on you.

I don't care for the "fitted" look on anyone really so those are the outfits that were my least favorite. I would go for straight fitting pants, as opposed to skinny or fitted. Or maybe slight flares would be another option?

Sharan - how very kind - no one has ever said I had a model's face before!! I am not sure I agree with your lovely list of features but thank you all the same.

Tina - sadly it is likely to remain hot until mid -April so plenty of time to wear sleeveless tops! I do need to get new tops, so your suggestions were right on. I do find it hard with the fluid tops not to feel blocky because of my strong shoulders and also because they are often loose everywhere except my hips/ bottom (and it I went bigger they would be too low at the bust - a small bust is another proportional issue for me that I didn't mention above)
Trekkiegirl I do wear skinnies (well not much right now in the summer heat) but really I not sure if I'm comfy with the idea of playing up my legs! I don't really count them among my assets!
Suz you are very kind and perceptive, though possibly a bit coloured by less recent pics (I was 3-4 kilos less just last April!) I haven't tried BF's seriously yet. I know I should try fluid tops - I haven't succeeded yet in finding many, but I am working back in the city and will be back to having lunch hours where I can browse. I need to improve my belt collection to help with trying out semi tucks.

Anne, you have many, many good features to play up! Lovely skin and eyes, a strong shoulder line, willowy waistline, and an overall athletic appearance even if you do feel over your "ideal" weight.

I am with those who suggest fluid fits for up top as you revamp your wardrobe. They will freshen your look considerably and help to "balance" some of the perceived problem areas. Some of the top shapes that work for me should also work for you.

Of course with my colder climate, I mainly wear pullovers (your jumpers, I guess) and I often layer them, at that. But a higher necked, fluid necked or slightly oversize top (whatever the fabrication) can be your friend. Worn semi-tucked, it can disguise a multitude of issues. It can: lengthen your leg line (if the rise on your pants is right); hide any midriff widening; give curves in places you want them and straighten things out where you don't; and make you look and feel more up to date. So that would be my first suggestion.

I also find BF fits very comfortable and forgiving of my athletic thighs. Your climate would even permit you to wear them more often with booties/ rolled hems (I can't do that often because it gets too cold to bare skin). I wear my shirts tucked and belted or semi-tucked when I am wearing a BF fit jean. Looser fit trousers or luxe track pants could have a similar effect on you for work or dressier situations.

And there is nothing like a shift dress to glide over problem areas of all kinds! Go MOD or go home. :)

I agree with Tina - fluid tops and skinny pants will really highlight your legs. And - this is maybe just my thing and not something you would do - anytime I'm feeling less than completely happy with the way I look, I like to put on a bit more makeup. A bright lipstick or some color on my lids always perks me up and I feel like it draws attention to my face and away from my body, which if I may say so, your face is gorgeous!

You look good in sleeveless tops but I guess if you are heading into winter that might not be any help.
I think the right skinny jean or pant would look really nice and you have always looked good in Aline skirts in the pics I've seen. Take advantage of fluid fits being on trend and buy some loose fitting welted tops to wear with fitted bottoms and maybe some slightly more fitted ones to go with your skirts. Just some ideas. I did visit your leggings thread and you look really nice in the blouse in pic 2. Glad to hear you're not down on your body. Tight clothes generally don't show our figures off to our advantage. You have a very nice shape. I hope others chime in with more ideas.

Anne, you look good, no worries. We are similar with the X hourglass, athletic thighs and strong shoulder line, and I'm several pounds over my 'good' number and not many things fit. Strong shoulders and that X hipline make fit a challenge even at a perfect weight. But it's more fun when I'm thinner because those problem parts are streamlined, easier and more fashion friendly to dress.

Lately I'm falling back on my fav colors, lux sweaters and a couple essential skinny jeans/pants that fit my legs well, stuff I already had. Extra pounds mean I don't shop for bigger sizes. So it's pushed me toward bolder choices. Pretty interesting to be launched into exploring 'better' accessories and a few different silhouettes.

Eileen Fisher skirted leggings and asymmetrical tops!! That would never have happened at my ideal weight but after throwing caution to the wind, it helped me feel creative this winter.

I have sometimes felt this way, too, Anne--not having any stellar parts to show off. But we do all have our good features! In my opinion, you have slender arms and legs, good shoulders, a nice waist, and a model's face and hair. Maybe focus on dressing to highlight those aspects of your beauty.

I am not going to revisit my body type AGAIN (I know I am pear/rectangle, short legged and long waisted, X type hourglass) but I am wondering how to dress my body now I have put on a few pounds.
I am not overweight, but my body type (which when slim looks athletic even if not fit, owing to strong thighs, a small bust and strong shoulders) seem to look like an athlete - a few years after stopping all training!
My thread on skirted leggings shows the worst of it - big arms and thighs, but I am a bit chunky around the midriff, and upper hips too, which I am not usually.
If the art of dressing your body to highlight the good parts - what do you do when there don't seem to be any !?
Please note I don't have any major self esteem issues or anything - it is just an analytical question, and one that I'll need to address as I try to refresh my wardrobe
