If it's winter and I'm cold, I'll also wear socks with them. They have a nice high arch and are adjustable so they work well. I had plantar fascia pain a few years ago while wearing 25-year-old Birkenstock sandals around the house. Here in So Cal it's not the custom to remove shoes at other people's houses so I keep my shoes on. I prefer something on my feet (although socks aren't the best option), mostly because my dog drools a lot! We take our shoes off at the door but don't ask guests to.  They usually do anyway, especially in winter. I find I don't like to go barefoot at other peoples homes, not sure why.  I've gotten into the habit of bringing a pair of flip flops with me in case street shoes are a no-no. And I don't mind just wearing socks around someones house, although with certain outfits it's not the best look. And if it's someone's house whom I don't know well, I often ask whether they'd prefer shoes on or off. I was raised to take my shoes off at the front door, so whenever I go to other people's houses, that's my first instinct. But if they're a shoes indoors household, they look at my like I'm crazy, and then I leave my shoes on. ;) I feel perfectly comfortable in stocking-ed feet anywhere but would only go barefoot at the houses of family or good friends. When people visit me, I don't insist they took their shoes off (or even mention it...although I have a rug next to my door where a few of my own shoes lives, which probably gives them a hint), but I'm always relieved if they do. Saves some floor washing for me once they leave! When I studied abroad in Russia, I lived with host families. I have several different types of footwear I have designated as our house only shoes. In summer I have a pair of Birkies for the house, but I do really go either barefoot or with socks most of the time. I have a pair of traveling house shoes that I usually have in tow to wear at other people's homes, just in case. As an adult, I relaxed into taking shoes off after work and going stocking footed (winter) or barefoot (summer). Now, as a middle-aged adult with fussy feet, I enjoy cozy, supportive slippers on winter evenings and crocs on summer evenings.
