I think we are all a bit that way and that is why we don't really notice - it's just how things should be.
Like Janet, I have scoliosis (spent all of jr high in a back brace that covered under the bust line to the hips) that was corrected as much as it could be. My shoulder blades are not even and all in between shoulders to hips, it's lopsided just a bit here and there.
Most of the time I don't think about it although I suppose it could make some styles look wrong, I have never really analyzed it as such and just move on. Spent too many crucial years worrying about the brace and how self conscious I was in it. Funny thing is at a jr. high reunion I told one of the guys (a good friend for life) about the brace and he was amazed because he thought I was cute and never noticed it. If only I had known then

I'll add myself to the chorus - one of my calves is smaller than the other and one leg is functionally longer than the other because of an old back injury. That makes everything else lopsided. Plus my face is quite asymmetrical and the frown line on on the left is much deeper than the one on the right and my teeth are not symmetrically crooked.

Despite this, I look normal, and so do all the rest of the lopsided people in the world!

I also think everyone has their things. My left side of my face is totally different from the right - I did a photography project once, mirroring the two halves, and like you I thought it was like two different people in there. I also know I have one longer leg, because I often trip over that foot...

I have heard all about the symmetry is beauty stuff, but I have never personally felt that way. I'm attracted to unusual faces, typically.

My own face and body is asymmetrical. My smile and entire jaw are crooked and it pulls my whole face off to one side, which is something new in the last few years (Always have had a crooked bite, but it was never visible). I have one ear that is the size of a small child's both internally and externally (they have to use pediatric tools at the ENT doc's office, and I can't wear adult-size earbuds or earplugs) and one ear that is normal. One ear has an attached lobe and the other doesn't, so when I got my ears pierced the lady had a horrible time deciding where to pierce them. One is almost an inch higher than the other, which makes glasses a pain.

One of my feet is a slightly different size than the other, but I have one "weird" foot because of medical issues. My whole body gets out of line and one hip and one shoulder will end up 2 inches lower than the other, which looks odd and makes clothing hang horribly and makes my chest and arms look lopsided even though my breasts are close to the same size (one is a tiny bit smaller, but only by 1/2 to 1 cup size). I have a weak side and a strong side, like most people, but I am weird because my dominant hand is actually the side that is weak because of brain damage.

I am not symmetrical on both sides either and I doubt anyone is! I have sloping shoulders but the left one is slightly higher and I know my left leg is also slightly longer and turned slightly more in the socket. My ankles are exactly the same in width either!

Oh sweetie, we are ALL lopsided! Well, the vast majority of us. Facial symmetry in particular is considered a measure of beauty -- the more symmetrical it is, the more attractive the person. Studies bear this out. (Facial symmetry is not the ONLY measure of beauty, however!). Having said that, my own face is not symmetrical. Mostly it doesn't bother me except for my eyes, which differ in shape (one lid folds a little more than the other), because eyes are what people look at when they talk to you, so I feel it's quite noticeable. Oh well, what can you do.

As for the rest of the body, I've got one slightly bigger breast, one bigger hand, one bigger foot, and probably one longer leg (I'm told everyone does), and apparently my spine is not totally straight, although this is only something my doctor noticed once during a routine test for scoliosis. I probably have more asymmetries that I just haven't noticed.

Hope that makes you feel better.

I've never noticed any big asymmetries in my body, although I'm sure I have them. My face, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. In addition to bone structure, I have a lazy eye plus some mild residuals from Bell's Palsy (I've actually had it twice on one side and once on the other, but only one bout seems to have left residuals) means that the right side of my face is somewhat droopier than the left, and the right eye appears larger, especially when I am tired. The biggest annoyance is that my glasses always appear crooked as well.

This old post from Academichic is worth a read:

oh yeah, everybody's asymmetrical. I've had decades' worth of experience sewing for myself and others, as well as instruction in life drawing. These two activities give you a lot of info about how other people's bodies look. Interestingly, both of them involve being able to 'see' through clothing to the body underneath.

What i've learned is that nobody is perfectly symmetrical, in fact if a person is getting pretty close to symmetrical they can start to look a bit odd or fake. as far as i care, the only time to get concerned is if it affects gait which can lead to back or joint problems.

re: clothing, just alter so that it fits. this will be more comfortable and will reduce the look of any asymmetry, since you won't have pulling and tugging. steph

Oh goodness, I am so asymmetrical it's not funny. I tried taking pictures of myself one time standing totally straight, and I look crooked no matter what.

I have scoliosis and one of my legs is slightly longer than the other. When I tailor pants, they generally take half an inch more off one leg than the other. I have to have tops and dresses taken in on my left side but not my right. My left foot is slightly larger than my right, and boots fit more snugly on my left calf than my right. One shoulder is higher than the other. Strangely, the only thing that seems to be symmetrical are my boobs!

Even my face is asymmetrical -- my chin tilts down on one side, one eye is slightly wider than the other, etc.

But somehow I don't look like a total freak, so I guess it's all ok.

One of my legs, I've just been told, is slightly longer than the other. I doubt it's noticeable to others, but I worry about how it might affect my body's entire alignment. I know that when I examine a pair of shoes I've walked around in quite a bit, they've worn down in a funny way.

I think one breast is slightly lower on my chest. My left calf and thigh are both narrower than their counterparts on the right side, like .5" for the calf and maybe an inch or more for the thigh.

What's more visible to me is the difference between my nostrils. One is more rounded and flared than the other. My profiles stand out from each other.

When growing up, I got socked in the nose not once but twice. Now it's just a tad off center. When I went to get braces (at age 25), my orthodontist pointed out that my face is not symmetrical, but that no one's face is. Also, my left foot is slightly larger than my right foot. I'm sure there are other differences that are so slight I just haven't noticed them. I've come to terms with my body and all it's flaws, both real and perceived, and try to dress my best.

Hi, This is not the kind of thing I would normally shout about but in the interests of honesty - in case others are in the same boat (and also to prove I have nothing to be ashamed of):

I have Poland Syndrome which meant that the right side of my chest did not develop (while my left did). Also my ribs are more pronounced on the left side of my chest. I had a breast augmentation on the right only about 10 years ago. Before this time I was very self concious and wore clothes to hide my 'deformity'. I was constantly concerned that someone would find out that I was different to the norm.

However, I am now fairly happy with my appearance - even if it not one that could be perceived as perfect.

We all are to some degree. My left leg is shorter and the thigh is thinner than my right. But my left calf is bigger than my right, oddly. My left boob is barely smaller. Jeans always twist toward my left when viewed from behind, so the center seam does not line up straight toward my back. And so it is.

Contrary to popular belief, humans rarely grow up to have perfectly symmetric bodies. In most cases the asymmetry is so mild one can't even notice it without pointing. Still, my own asymmetry used to freak me out even though other people can't see it.

My entire left side from head to toe is different from my right side. I'm not sure why, but my waist is a bit chunkier and the left breast is bigger than the right.
The breast size difference doesn't bother me too much, since approx. 5% of female population have perfectly same size breasts.
I have sometimes difficulties finding ear plugs that fit in the left ear as well in the right, and the same with socks. Luckily, my eyes differ only slightly from each other.

The waist issue was the biggest concern and it used to bother me for years, since I have an ok curve on my right side while my left side is straight-ish. It looks as if I'm two different bodies mashed into one. I also feared something is really wrong, because I didn't know how common asymmetry is. I know now, but sometimes I still think my body is 'deformed' rather than 'unique'.

Have you had similar experiences and how do you feel now? Have you had any difficulties with finding fitting clothing or footwear because of asymmetries?
