I always cry when a car of mine goes! The last one I refused to be there when it went! I've had my current car since 2006 and it's now 12 years old and got over 111,000 on the clock (yes that's the correct number of noughts!) and I still adore it. It's in need of a new clutch soon and a service but it's still a reliable little beast and still very whizzy. I hope to get many more miles out if it x

My old Ford Taurus stationwagon was Nemo as it was a huge white whale of a car to park. My new ( to me ) car ,a turquoise blue PT Cruiser is Young Betsy . Dad had a Chevy truck that was a true blue turqouisey colour that was similar to mine. The truck was Old Betsy.

There's a very good reason to name cars. With the ouch prices for gas these days , if you name your car it becomes your mechanical pet. Going to the gas station = feed time. Fuel injector / carburetor cleaner = anti hair ball treats ( for cars&trucks- best given at least every six weeks . $5 occasionally saves a lot of $$$ later.) other stuff you can anthropomorphize on your own. But it does seem a teeny bit less painful spending on gas when considered this way.

Oh, Emily, your story reminds me of my beloved '88 Honda Civic hatchback. It was my first new car, paid for by me, somehow, through student loan repayment and grad school. Like your Rusty Old Car, mine saw me through so many milestones, including my first teaching job, camping trips, dating, and moving for grad school. When I finally got rid of it, more than 120,000 miles and thirteen years later, I brought it to Goodwill to donate. As I was filling out the paperwork, I started crying. The Goodwill lady said, "Are you SURE you want to donate your car?"

For several years after, I would sometimes see my model of car around town and hope it was mine, still being enjoyed by someone.

Here's to your good memories of Rusty Old Car!

Good job using it up all the way! My first car also died of rust. It was very good to me. I drove it until it was dust, and then we swept up the dust and drove it some more. It finally wouldn't even pass inspection anymore due to frame damage. It was a good car though, and served me well through single-hood, dating, marriage and the birth of two children. On the night I went into labor with baby #2 my husband's nicer, newer car would not start. Old faithful saw us safely to the hospital. It was 15 years old and still fired up on the first try. Ahh, the memories.

Wow...I even name my cars, plants, etc...There is meaning in inanimate objects...The question is who defines the meaning?...People like us?...or everyone else?...smile...I am glad to know there is one other who does this kind of wonderful, crazy stuff...

I get sentimental about this sort of thing, too, Emily :)

Onward and upward, I say.

I just watched my rusty old car get towed away. Too many winters had taken their toll on it and it wasn't worth much; I donated it to a local charity and hopefully it will do some good. The Rusty Old Car didn't like to be shifted into reverse, was loud, chewed through batteries like bubble gum, and was literally rusting apart. Pushing in the clutch was practically a leg workout. It was character building, and I loved it. It was my first car, and I drove it for 8 years or so, to college and then my first grown up jobs. It handled road trips, beach trips, beer runs, mall runs and represented freedom. Adieu, you delightful machine. Thanks for everything.
