A Day in the Life of Hard-working Kate

My son and I got to an appointment just in the nick of time today. I bought a Coke along the way, for my headache. I wasn't finished when we arrived, so I screwed the cap back on (tightly!) and popped it into my bag.

After the meeting, I stopped at a housewares and furnishing warehouse right next to the subway station. I've never been there before, but will be back once I know where we're moving. I picked up a cereal bowl and egg cup. Wrapped them in paper and they fit in the bag easily. Then I went to drop off some papers at the allergist's office, about 25 pages in a ziplock bag. The office was closed, grr, so they stayed in the backpack. I decided to walk to a restaurant we like. Unfortunately, I guessed poorly on the route and walked a couple extra kilometers, wearing footless tights--without socks:/ I got such blisters! I hobbled through the market along the canal, but all the socks were much too thick for my gold boots. Sad me.

Dinner was lovely--green orechiette and a glass of red wine. I finished the pasta first and then, because I'm a lightweight, asked for some bread to go with my wine. I ate one yummy piece with the remaining wine, then wrapped the rest up in a napkin, put that in the pink shopper, popped it into the backpack and got a pizza to go for my son.

Next stop--the drug store for socks. They had great socks, with a little fleece lining inside. I got one pair to put on immediately, and an extra pair. Also got toothpaste, a comb, hair elastics, gum, and a pint of juice for my son. (OK, 500 ml of juice). It all fit in the bag easily. So much nicer than schlepping an extra shopper! Too many different items and shapes get tricky to carry, so I was glad I didn't even notice I the bag on my back and only had to carry the pizza box.

The coup de grace was the WMF store right next to the bus stop. They're having a sale, and we will need kitchen wares soon. I'll go back to shop for real tomorrow when the Crueset store next door is open, but tonight I picked up a set of cookie cutters for €4.50. I'll be real; they did not want to go in the backpack. I carried them onto the bus on top of the pizza box, then unpacked and put the rolls in the bowl and rearranged the rest so I could zip it easily, without mashing things into place or forcing the bag.

I'm back home now. My son enjoyed his pizza and juice, the dishes, cookie cutters and rolls are in the kitchen and the rest is in the bathroom, except for the papers. I took them out see if there were any crumbs on the bottom of the bag (nope!), then put them back in, along with a hat and mittens, "winter stuffing" to help the bag keep its shape overnight, and wiped the outside (it's sprinkling outside).

I think that's a lot more use than other bags of this caliber get (except maybe Suntiger's). If I weren't using it this way, I'd still be using the Desigual backpack, which did this work for 4 months and is still in great shape. But then the Kate Spade would sit idle, and what's the point of that?

LOL, I am not that organized at all, I stop daily at grocery shop on my way from work, often buying just a few items needed for dinner. But I use shopping bag even when it is only one item.

My bags are all in a bin together, and used regularly-especially the MK one. Go team wear! They're outlet finds and Etsy designers, nothing super expensive though. And I bring packable shopping bags too, but have tossed all sorts of things in my big leather work bag!

Gretchen, good point about the wear on leather goods! I like my bomber jacket much better now that it has some patina from honest use than when it was brand new and shiny.

Thanks for getting back to me on that, Taylor! I hope I never have to find out, don't think I would use my bag differently if I knew there was/was not a policy like that in place.

Shevia, hooray for shabby genteel!

Anchie, that's quite a collection! You must be more organized than I am and do A Grocery Shopping Trip. I do that too, but since I'm still getting settled, I frequently find that the ricotta package is only 250 g and I need 400, or that the store is sold out of peanut oil and I don't have any yet, so I have to stop and pick some up elsewhere another time. That's why I wanted a bigger bag like this one. The shoppers come out for the trips just for groceries a few times a week.

Cindysmith, team wear, YES!

Thanks Angie, I thought you'd be glad, because you encouraged me to get it. I don't plan on tossing this bag around foolishly, but it is here to work. I hear you on keeping the shape. It's somewhat surprising to me, but I can do something towards that end, as described above.

Clever Santa. Gorgeous new wardrobe pet. Perfect for you, FashIntern.

I carry a designer bag daily and swap them out almost daily too. I have many to share the wear because bags are my thing. (I've been saving and collecting them for 26 years). I am very good to them, pack them very neatly, and never hook them on anything. The one I'm using for the day sits neatly on a bench at home with the contents packed. I do not come home and throw my bag somewhere. I never chuck it into the back of the car either. I treat my beautiful bags with care and place them down with respect But I'm not precious about them either. I travel and urban walk with them. They are there to be used, and all my Furlas are workhorses!

My bags are neatly stored in our walk-in closet on a door rack and on shelves. Some of them are in bags and boxes, and some are stuffed to hold their shape.

I also carry reusable bags in my bags. I do not overpack my handbag so that it loses its shape. I just use another bag when it's full.

I am a one bag type of girl. My Celine bag gets treated just like any other bag I've ever carried. Which is abhorrently. It's holding up well to my abuse this far.

I'm also very much like Rachylou. The dog eats off of the same plates/bowls/whatever as we people do. I wear the Rick Owens sweater, I burn the $30 candle, I wear the designer shoes to grocery shop in the middle of nowhere, TX. Life is too short to save the nice things for special occasions

I treat all my bags the same, regardless of their price. I usually have 5-6 bags in current rotation and keep them on top of my dresser for easy access. Others are stored on top shelf of my closet, stuffed with paper and in dust bags. I periodically change what is in and out of rotation, mostly based on my current color preferences.
I don’t use bags to carry my groceries though, I have reusable shopping bags for that.

My feeling in general is that bags look better broken in. So yes, I'm rough on them, but they are leather and can take it. Agree 100% on not putting liquids or foods of any kind inside the bag.

Dust covers are excellent for travel, and also make great laundry bags.

Thank you all for the replies! I seem to be much more in the norm on this, for this group, than I expected!

Rachylou, I'm not sure if I kept my little girl's bucket bag from Target in the storage locker or not, but none of my other bags are particularly precious. They're in finds. The blue was a test run for the red, and is nearly exactly the same size. I use the guitar strap to make a green one a crossbody, but I'm considering having a long green strap made (the original was too short to wear crossbody). I also have a little black Coach, about 5x8x2, and a Nash that needs a new strap. There is a leather working shop around the corner. Our neighborhood is the center of gay nightlife in Berlin, so their window is full of things like men's chaps, but I bet they could handle a simple purse strap or 2.

Bijou, I carried very small purses for several years before moving here. I seem to still have the discipline of keeping extraneous stuff out. I've even stopped carrying one organizer full of all kinds of helpful things! I'm impressed that you even put the stuffing back in yours! Mine are nearly empty most of the time. Maybe I should do something like that overnight to help it keep its shape

Jessikams, that sounds comfortingly familiar.

Sterling, truth be told, mine is on the floor just as often as on that ledge. But it is also a clean floor. I should get some leather cleaner. I think the leather and suede conditioner I got for my red boots discolored them a little, so must do some research.

kkards, thanks for celebrating with me. I don't want to think about what could've happened... Maybe I'll start putting anything squishy in the shoppers, and then in the backpack.

Thanks Runcarla, that sounds like a reasonable solution.

Aquamarine, that sounds like a lot of swappage! Can you tell any difference that using the dustcover makes? I suppose that would require a bag without one for comparison, which you obviously don't have.

Janet, I've still got the shopper in the photo on this post https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....bag-search, as well as a smaller one. The backpack comes into play when I'm getting so little that it can all fit in there (why is milk only sold in liter packages here?!?), or so much that the shoppers can't hold it all, or something I don't want to get damaged. Maybe I should get a gallon ziplock freezer bag to put the eggs, strawberries, or whatever in, and keep it in the backpack with the shoppers.

Jules, we are of one mind on impractical fashion. I remember Santa's elf arguing with me about this bag when I thought it was already a mute point. I explained how I expected it to be useful (I was right), because I was afraid she was going to go buy something else, so I wanted to be sure she knew what mattered to me.

Thanks smittie! I love the color too. Unfortunately I love it so much that I also got a jacket in it this fall. I don't think it goes with the purse well.

Sterling, are you worried that the hook would stretch it out/damage it somehow? That's what I was thinking.

Janet, hm, your upright storage suggests maybe I really should adapt Bijou's habit of putting the stuffing back in them.

taylor, such valuable information! Do you know for sure that K Spade has this policy or should I check? I ask because when the strap on my Coach broke, they told me they only replace them within the first year.

Opaline, such a sneaky elf, haha!

Suz, that's a great way to use the dust cover! I want to keep mine around because of the "personalization". This is the perfect use for it.

Jill, glad to hear it. Honestly, if I felt I needed to do an emptying-out and cleaning ritual every night, I probably wouldn't carry it much.

Torontogirl, those and this one are about the same level, right? I have no idea, because I've never considered one of these before, was appalled a few years ago when my little sister got one for her birthday. Never say never! I wonder how Santa did that April delivery....

Here's my happy little camper, along with the smaller shopper. They almost coordinate with each other. It was pretty slumped on the ledge, so I hung it up. The stuffing that came with it is with the wrapping paper (just starting to build up stockpiles of things like mail supplies, so I kept it). My son will laugh, but I think I will use it, unless I think of a better alternative. Mittens & hat might work in the winter.

I'm not too precious with my better-quality purses either (I've never gone higher-end than Coach or Cole Haan, it should be noted) ... I either hang them at the front door, or put them in a bin I have under our entryway bench, depending on the width of the strap (i.e. if the hook will bend the strap, they go in the bin) ... no one is allowed to share this bin though. That's my protective measure I never keep the dust covers ... even the purses I don't use regularly, well, I just dust them when I need to!

Enjoy the purse - it is gorgeous! And Santa was very thoughtful

I don't worry about mine at all and never use their dust covers. I keep all my good bags in an armoire on a shelf and as far as the one that's currently in use--a Marc Jacobs satchel--it's subject to the same conditions as a more inexpensive bag. I don't empty it at the end of the day. Like Jules, I too believe that bags are meant to be used.

What a great bag and how fun that you also got your lipstick!

I use the dustbags for packing shoes and laundry and other odds and ends when I travel! I very rarely use them for the bags themselves because as others have said, out of sight = out of mind.

My clutches are on a shelf in my closet and I keep my other bags on hooks in there (or sometimes on a doorknob). If I will use the same bag tomorrow, I leave my stuff in it overnight (except for phone). I do inspect them every now and then for dirt and wear and condition them once in a long while.

Like Janet, I carry a little nylon sack inside my bag for groceries or other purchases and don't put anything that might leak (other than water) in my bag.

Congrats on getting your beautiful bag.
I am somewhat of a designer bag junkie and I use them all !
I do change out every couple of days and I do stuff and store them in their dust bags . Also remember that designer bag companies (at least the ones I have dealt with ) will replace or repair a damaged bag . I have actually had to have a bag re-dyed because hair color got on the outside....my fault and it was a small charge BUT it saved my bag and the investment . Another was completely replaced because of a manufacturing defect.
Enjoy your bag , you will get many years of pleasure from your investment:)

Sterling, I tend to store my bags that stand nicely on shelves, and hang totes (which don’t stand but flop or fall over) on hooks. Clutches get stored on a shelf “filed” upright, like books on a shelf, with clear dividers holding them in compartments. (yes, I have too many clutches!)

I firmly believe purses/bags are meant to be used. As someone who gets frustrated with impractical fashion they are the ultimate form meets function item for me. So I definitely would not unpack every night and I do hang on my entryway hooks (admittedly I don’t have storage to do anything else). I typically carry a cute collapsible reusable bag for groceries etc. You can even look for one that is in a complementary colour or pattern to this bag

I almost never use the dust bags. For me, out of sight is out of mind. I keep my bags on shelves or on hooks in my closet, where I can see them, and I change out frequently, depending on my outfit for the day (it takes only seconds).

I also agree with kkards 100% — I wouldn’t put anything possibly leakable other than a water bottle in my good bags. I carry in my bag a little Baggu reusable tote that folds into a pouch when not in use — that becomes my impromptu shopping bag if needed.

I keep two bags out constantly...one is always a crossbody, which I find easier when I am out food shopping or running errands, and then another more-statementy bag. I store them behind a chair near the door to my mud room, where they sit on the carepeted floor away from harm. When I decide to swap either out, it goes back into a dust bag and on a shelf in my bedroom closet.

YAY for getting the bag!
no, i don't use the dust bag if i'm using the bag....i generally leave my bag on counter in my kitchen (its out of the way of the actual cooking part of the kitchen). while i don't baby my bags, the one thing i don't do with my leather bags is put anything that could leak in them no matter how well it is wrapped (lesson learned the hard way)....

I tuck bags into their dust covers only if I know I won't be reaching for them any time soon. The sad thing is that once safely in the dust cover, I forget about them.

If I know that I will be using the same bag the following day, I don't unpack my bag, but leave it in my study. However, I do change up my bags most days, so I generally swap out my bag either the night before or in the morning and pack up the old one - put the stuffing back in the bag and put it in its dustcover.

One bag is always left out - it is generally in the daily swapping that I clean out my bag - throw away tissues, receipts, tickets etc - so I like doing this to make sure that I am not carting around items I don't need.

How awesome that Santa sent you this present and also the lipstick!
