Echo, you can take “live” photos on an iphone (think android calls them “moving pictures”?). They are super short mini-movies; you can choose which frame will be the resting one.

I am with suntiger regarding facial selfies. Perhaps I am actually a troll and just in denial, but I frighten myself with facial selfies. They show every. single. flaw. Which, at 51, is quite a few!

I need to get better at mirror selfies. Sometimes I try to take pictures with a timer, but I need to take about five shots to get one good one. Perhaps I just don't photograph well...

Great question, Carla! These are super tips. Thanks to Janet especially for weighing in with those details. I didn't know standing too close to the mirror can foreshorten the body. Surely that's what's going on in the photos I just posted of me in flared corduroys in the dressing room--haha! I didn't realize I was so short until I saw the photos. I'm going with the too-close-to-mirror foreshortening effect.

Yes, well I am reading with great interest. I just snap 2 or 3, pick the best, crop and do an automatic color correct if it brightens it up. As you can tell from my selfies .

I try to do what Janet says, more or less -- but I have a terrible light/ mirror situation in this house so my pics are awful compared to what I could get in our Vancouver house. There's no where else for me to put the mirror, so I'm stuck with this for now.

I haven't taken photos of myself in ages, but I absolutely recommend a tripod (can be wee) so you don't have to bend into a forced shape holding the camera. I used one of those octopus tripods that held my phone easily and sat it on my kitchen counter. Then I used a five second countdown. I got some great mid-air pics of my cat leaping onto the counter to join me!

I also pinned a great tutorial years ago on looking your best in photos:

This is a big part of why I do so many of my pix outside. That and wanting to show parts of my setting. I also use a lot of the editing tools Janet mentions, cropping, fixing proportion distortion if the phone was at an angle. I also turn up the brightness and might use a filter if the whole pic is washed out.

IT'S ALL ABOUT GOOD LIGHT. Adjust the light with your phone tools afterwards if you need to.

Hold your phone at the right angle.

Stand the right distance away from the mirror.

I haven't figured out where to hold the phone to get the best/truest proportions. If I hold it up near my head and off to the side the way a few of you do, I end up looking in the wrong direction and it looks really bizarre. The whole thing confounds me, lol. Interesting about how cropping can affect image quality. I have to crop because I'm in front of a wall of mirror (closet doors) which reflect back every single thing in my bedroom (which you don't realize how messy it is until you see it from another point of view). Grr. Whatever, Carla your photos are always good!

I don't take facial selfies, and never will! Outfit photos were definitely better in the bathroom of my old office than at home though. Much better light and no extra clutter. The most I do is crop, and maybe a filter to make colors truer to life, or lighter to show detail.

I’ve tried to hold the camera lower so get a better picture, but I generally end up cutting off my head, or the picture is so lopsided it’s useless.

Also, modern phone cameras have a zoom function, so you can zoom in a bit while taking the photo, so you don’t have to crop so much later. There’s a balancing act — too close to the mirror = distortion, when your body is foreshortened, but too much distance and we see too much other stuff, and cropping a lot of data out of a photo means losing image quality. I recommend playing with distance and cropping to get the result that works best for we have individual’s environment.

Here’s a example — straight out of the camera, and final version…

Note: the light here is not great. A bright day with a window behind me isn’t optimal. But I opened the bathroom door next to me, letting in light from the side. It helps a bit.

Good lighting really helps, but newer smartphone cameras have better sensors that do compensate for that a bit. I used to spend more time taking outfit photos when i first found YLF but now I just go with my highly imperfect mirror selfies.

For me, the editing after taking the pic is key. I correct the perspective distortion (although that creates some leg elongation which is flattering but not necessarily true to life) — basically using the photo editing tools in the iPhone photos app to make the edges of the photo roughly parallel to the edges of the mirror frame. I crop so that a lot of the background is eliminated — I find some participant photos here hard to see because the subject is tiny in the frame. I brighten the shadows a bit if needed and adjust the color tone and saturation to reflect what I see IRL because sometimes the light/color is either too contrasty or too flat.

If you can take photos with diffused, not harsh, front lighting rather than with a bright light source behind you, that helps too. Outdoors is not always better. The best light can be bright and diffused, like midday on a slightly overcast day. You’re basically trying to avoid strong shadows.

Of course there are ways of posing and angling the body for the most flattering effect, but I’m not an expert on that and don’t feel the need to do much for an outfit photo — I feel silly posing for photos!

I’ve improved my ‘selfie’/OOTD shots since when I first took them with an iPad! I picked my last iPhone (‘old’ at 5 yo) in part for it’s camera capabilities and photo quality improved. I do have great full length mirrors in the rec room (from when former owners had a home gym), but the light can be dodgy - especially in winter.

Best quality seems out of doors/natural light, but photographers are catch as catch can!
