I find blazers tough, but I have had luck following Angie's recommendations. I bought 2 of the ponte knot GAP blazers in her recommendations,a nd both are fab. I bought mine in lilac in bright coral, but they also have them in black and navy.

Thanks, Ingunn. Yes I don't think I want black as I drains me of all colour but I could definitely wear a grey tone. I think I've seen your blazer. Good tips about taking along a skirt too, when trying on. Kalli, it sounds like we are in the same boat as I only have my one navy blazer. Definitely a wardrobe hole, can I come to partake of Angies services too? Don't forget to get cake for us too Angie!

I definitely recommend a blazer, and if you don't want a black one, there are endless opportunities still. I have a cropped one in blue/grey that is so versatile in my wardrobe - a great essential. A cream or a bright one could be great, too. Try loads of them and use your cell phone camera to document the look. Bring a favorite skirt along with your jeans if you're unable to try it at home. This way you'll learn what suits you and what your preferences are.

I am so happy you asked this question. Shockingly I own one blazer at moment so it's a big hole for me :(. Hmm maybe if I visit Seattle and Angie and book 1-2 hour of her services, I wouldn't have this problem.

Thanks Jyoti, thats a great list of tips and a good point about a boyfriend blazer, because if I did decide to wear a pencil skirt or narrow width dress (as Angie said) it would look good over that too.
Mary, yes I've noticed your fab blazers, great inspiration for me

I wear blazers almost every day and couldn't live without them. I think the best thing to do is go out and just try on a whole bunch so you have a good idea of what suits you best. Good luck in your search!

Oh, and for summer you can't beat a white or ivory blazer! I wore mine at least once a week all last summer!

I love blazers, and I think my count is around twenty now.

For shape, I think a lot of it depends on your shape and what is flattering for you. Stances and buttons and single VS double breasted totally depends on who's wearing the blazer!

For a good classic blazer, I think you should look for the following things:

1) A tailored fit. Make sure it fits in the shoulders! That's the most important thing to fit first. Then look at how it fits through the body and how the sleeves are in terms of length and width.

2) Go for a full sleeve length. That's the most classic to me. You can always roll them up for a more casual look.

3) Look for classic lapels. Notched are the most classic IMO, but peaked or shawl would not look dated either. Other things I would stay away from.

4) Avoid extras like ruffles and weird pockets and stuff like that if you want a really classic blazer that won't date.

5) Length kinda depends on your height and shape but I agree that just above hip length is generally safe.

I think you should go for one boyfriend blazer as well. It's proven to be quite a versatile shape that's stuck around after the fad faded. I like boyfriend blazers a lot with jeans and leggings as well as shorts and shorter skirts. It's also nice for a bit of a casual or menswear vibe.

As for being able to wear the same blazer with skirts - that depends on two things:

Whether you like those more alternative proportions because shorter jackets tend to be more flop proof and conventionally flattering with skirts/dresses.

Pencil skirts/dresses are better with longer jackets.

(I love classic blazers matched with short shorts and would wear the look if I actually wore short shorts).

Diane, you're after a fitted style (NOT body con) with about 2 buttons (although one button is more modern). Hip bone-grazing. Lowish-stance. Revere collar. Tapered long sleeve.

FABRIC! That's the big question.

Diane, this is right up my alley because I have a love affair with blazers. I think you can wear blazers in a number of ways; both dressy and casual. I've even seen one fashion blogger who pairs them with shorts and manages to make it look great! I'm not that brave yet. :)
I think I remember corals and blues when I looked at your wardrobe post as colours that were consistent. I think any blazer that would complement those colours would work really well. Navy? Stone/beige? Black? Grey? The possibilities are endless. Have a look at your trousers and skirts and see what colours would complement those. I am not a firm believer that your blazer must match your trousers/skirt....jsut "go" with it. My post yesterday was an example of that. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....tty-friday
I find, the best fit for me, is tailored, nipped in a bit at the waist and hits at the hip. I'm short as well as short waisted so longer blazers tend to swallow me up and look boxy. I wear this same cut in various colours with jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses. I just bought an ivory blazer last night and ordered a navy/white striped one from Boden last week.
Hope this information helps.

As you know I have been thinking about my wardrobe additions a lot lately and I think it would be really usefull to have a couple of classic blazers in 'my' neutrals of maybe, light grey, brown, mid charcoal or stone. I know a lot of you ladies have such items in your wardrobes. My question however is what is the most classic style for now? and can one blazer length be worn over skirts/dressed as well as jeans or will I need a couple of different lengths. I would love your thoughts and comments
