I do something similar to RunnerRae, I save big events (holidays, trips) in an extra folder, the rest is saved from time to time in a folder named with the date I download them (for example 2012_10_05). I find things easily that way. When I do have photos printed I save those in another folder in the other one, because I don't want to edit the originals. That's my basic rule - if I don't feel like I can see what's in the picture, then it goes. I happen to take photos as a large part of my job, although I'm not a professional photographer, but I have to remind myself that not everything in life is meant to be photographed like a crime scene. But still, I have 1000's of photos. I start by sorting them. Lately I just pick a time period, say a few months or a year if you don't have to many and put them in a album on iPHoto. I will go through once in a while and delete any duplicates, out of focus, or just plain bad pics. But if you love taking photos and take them of every event, like I do, there is no way you won't end up with 100's if not 1000's per year. Just try to keep them in a simple organization system, I find that's best to keep the stress low. I do any major trips as their own album, and just day to day photos per 6 months or year.
