Thank you! That would work for me and $79 is not a lot. With the add-ons the Air and MPB 15" both come to around $1800. If I can get in the door, I will check them out at the San Fran Apple store next week.

The optical drive is a good reason to have the MacBook Pro if that's your only computer. Angie and I share the optical drive in my MBP.

On the other hand, there is a separate optical drive you can buy with the MacBook Air that is $79.

I am chuckling that Rosie chooses the Mac Mini as her computer... so fitting for a Yorkie.

Thank you for the advice Greg and Sarah. I hadn't considered the Air. I will compare it against the 15" when I go looking next week. The one drawback of Air is that I will have to "borrow" the optical drive of someone else and I'm not sure that would work so well, this will be my only computer as someone else is getting my present MacBook 13". Plus I like burning CDs. Am I missing something?

Aw, Rosie's adorable! Our kitty always finds us when we're sitting on the couch with our laptops...

Since I take my laptop back and forth to work everyday, it's so convenient to have everything on one computer - but the big screen would be nice if I was all in one place. I can't even tell I'm carrying my computer when I bike now! And the Air is so great for traveling. Um, can you tell that I LOVE my Air?! Of course, Denise, I don't know what your computer lifestyle needs are...

Snap, Sarah! We are laptop twins. I love my laptop when we go away :). I do prefer to use it as a desktop with separate keyboard and display at home though.

Rosie is so, so, *so* cute. She is snoring next to us. (Sorry Denise, for going on about our little puppy on your thread. I'm a proud Mama).

I'll just weigh in unsolicited. I just got an 13" Air about 2 month ago, and I love, love, love it. It's so light and fast, and it doesn't get hot when you're sitting with in on your lap. It's fantastic!!!!!!!!! I don't even own a desktop anymore.

Since you are already a Mac user, there probably isn't any good reason to move to a PC.

Which laptop depends on what you do. If there is no heavy lifting like programming or video editing, and you want it to be light and portable, then the 13" MacBook Air is nice. We just bought one of these for Angie.

The 11" Air is very cute, but it lacks performance and Angie found its screen too small.

99% of the time Angie uses it as a desktop computer with a separate display, mouse and keyboard. We upgraded the memory to 4GB. The model we bought only has 128GB of storage, which is something to consider if you have a ton of digital music and photos -- you'll need somewhere else to store those.

If you want a lot more storage and a more powerful machine overall, then the MacBook Pro is the best bet. This will probably also save you a couple hundred dollars. I use a 15" MBP. We also have a Mac Mini as our music and picture server.

Hmmm. This evolved into Greg and Angie's computer menagerie, so I'll add some photos below.

Thanks Greg, I didn't realize I had re-set the default browser. I just re-set it to Safari.

I have never heard of Chrome, I will check it out.

I am going to phrase this next question in a "what computer would be best for YLF browsing and participation" mode to make it not totally OT to this forum. ; D

I am in the market for a new notebook computer... haven't had a PC since 2005 so Mac will probably win out. What do you recommend? Up to $1500-1600 OK.

Great question! We test extensively with Safari, Firefox and Chrome, and I try to use all three regularly with YLF. So I would pick based on your personal preference.

Personally, I like Chrome best. I find that it's the fastest and I love the way it combines the search and address bar (you type URLs and search terms in the same place).

There are minor differences in the way the site looks in the different browsers, but I find that my eye gets used to these when I use any browser for a short period of time.

The fact that those widgets open in Firefox probably means that at some point the default browser changed. You can switch it back if you go to Safari preferences. The very first item under the "General" tab should be the default browser.

If those crashes with YLF are a regular occurrence then please feel free to send me PM so I can try to figure out why they are happening.

One final thing: for security reasons it is always best to stay on the latest version of any browser.

I mostly use Safari. But is Firefox better for YLF?

I have noticed that some of the widgets on my desktop (for example for weather ... which takes me to accuweather.com) now opens in Firefox whereas it used to open in Safari. Is this a flash issue? Every once in a while, more like rarely, I crash using Safari for YLF. Thanks, Denise

Edit: I use a MacBook around 3 years old.
