Sorry to desert this thread...I was really tired and turned in early last night...

Thanks Skylurker. Whilst I did love the bomber Angie wore in her post. I don't think I want a bomber shape this time. Maybe for Autumn time, with the furry collar.

I cross posted with you both, Kari and Linder...Kari, that one you mentioned has a sort of raglan shoulder, which I actually like the idea of...hmmm. Linder that first one is lovely isn't it. I think I'm after a slightly drapier collar though...however, now I want a lovely boucle fabric like that!

Good point Joy. An asymmetric hem may be a thought.

Thanks for the visuals Manny! Good point about layering.

Thanks everyone! Lots for me to mull over. I need to get sketching ideas and looking through my pattern stash to see if I have anything I can adapt.

Oh I love this idea! I think a hip length jacket would be perfect for both skirts & jeans. I usually layer a longer top underneath my jackets when I wear jeans to get all proportions right...and the jacket works well with skirts.

For wearing with both skirts and jeans I don't think you can beat an assymetrical hem to get the best of both worlds. However, longer jackets seem to work well with pencil skirts. I love the first jacket you posted but it may be too dressyfor your needs. The second looks more casual.

Hi Diane. I think shorter is the way to go if you want the jacket to work with both skirts and jeans. I love Angie's first pick. And also the shape of the white colour blocked leather jacket Angie picked. I think the collars on both are very elegant.

Thanks Angie. I think I might agree about the sleeves. I'll probably go for the same fabric all over. So would most of the shorter length jackets in your finds work with a skirt as well as jeans?

Fun, Diane. Glad you're sewing something for YOU.

Draped collars have PLENTY of longevity - not to worry. I'm a little worried about the completely knitted sleeves - I'd keep the sleeves the same fabric or do a knitted inset panel.

Mmm. You probably need something short if you want to wear it with skirts.
How about a bomber Jacket? With a faux fur collar like Angie's Topshop jacket? The faux fur give them a retro pretty look instead of a sporty one.

Thanks Tanya. Yes, I do rather like the mixed media, though, I don't necessarily have to go for different sleeve, but I do like your idea for cream/bone shade.

You may be right about the length Sharan. I could go for something at high hip level, similar to my blush moto. Not sure if I want to go for an all out moto style, but a zipper would certainly add to the slightly more casual look that I'm after and the fabric would drape nicely. BTW I'm glad you feel the same as me about blazers :)

I like the jackets you've shown here, Diane. I'm not sure how well the length would be with jeans and skirts, though. I can picture them with jeans, but I wonder if they are a little long for skirts.
What about using your blush moto for inspiration? That's one that you wear with both pants and skirts, and it always looks super fabulous on you. With a less structured fabric, the front lapels would drape nicely for a soft effect.
I certainly won't argue with your thoughts on blazers, by the way. I just can't get into them at all; whenever I put one on, it just doesn't feel right to me--too stiff and formal--though I love how they look on others.

Oh, and I do hope drape is going to be around for a while!

Not Angie, but I think that a jacket similar to those you posted in light grey would be lovely on you. You could make the contrast sleeves in some think knit stretchy cram/bone material.

Hi lovely people. I wanted a bit of advice about jackets.

The back story is that I have some lovely light grey wool mix fabric which I bought over a year ago. The idea at the time was for me to make a classic blazer style, but as is often the way, it got left in my stash not made up, because life and work got in the way and other sewing projects took priority. Well, I'm glad I didn't make a classic blazer, because I have come to the conclusion that a classic style doesn't feel like the ideal style for me now. Yes, I know my dressing often skews pretty classic and I adore trench coats for instance, but a blazer can to my eye, sometimes be preppy and also a little rock chic, to name but two of the many style vibes. I just feel like I want something a little 'softer' in style and something that can be perhaps a little 'different' (that's my creative gene coming out) and also a little more casual?

I was therefore wondering about something with less structure (when I say that, I still want a bit of subtle shoulder structure) and perhaps some controlled drape. I won't want to heavily interface it to add stiffness.

So, my first question, is...are jackets with a bit of collar drape still going to be around for a while? Current? Or perhaps it's a style that will stick around, being as draped items have longevity nowadays.

Secondly, It would be great if you could show me photos of jacket styles that might suit my needs that you may have come across as you've gone shopping. Oh, and if I want to wear with jeans as well as slim skirts, what would be an ideal length?

And finally, I was admiring these two styles as possible inspiration...see photos.
