The part of the leg just under the knee where the top of the boot shaft comes is 12". The inside of the top of the shaft on a pair of size 8's is 15" The boot shaft is 18" from the floor and 17" from the heel for the size 8. They were a bit wide and easy to pull on, but not so much gap that I didn't think they could be worn with skirts, as Laura says, the RATE look. Definitely wide enough to tuck in jeans.<br /> My problem was that they were too high in the shaft and pushed against the bottom of my kneecap when I walked. The ones I got were nice leather but not soft enough to slouch. When i tried, they popped right back up. If I thought they would slouch, I would have kept them. Anything that slouches can work. Also, I always wear my Fryes loose, if that makes sense. I don't think they need to be fitted to the calf.
