Enginemom, the designers visit the same trend houses and are inspired by similar palettes straight off the bat.

Right, Fiona. Items are often marked down because they are bad sellers. This does not include end of season stuff, in store promotions, or stuff that is automatically marked down after 12 weeks (BR, Gap and AT have this markdown policy).

Thanks for the Link Deborah, And Angie,

Your answer spawned another question though! What does checking retail markdowns have to do with it (if it's on sale, it isn't a good trend?)

Thank you for such a great answer! There is so much more to this than I thought!

I have a question about the runway shows. Do all the designers get together beforehand and decide that they are ALL going to do a certain color or shape or whatever? Like, did they all decide that Spring 2012 was going to be coral and print bottoms and work that into their lines? How does the runway connect with what the trends will be? That part of the equation has always puzzled me!

Fiona, that's a great question. Not that easy to answer though.

I have been tracking trends for 20 years that it's second nature to me now. I can barely explain how it's all absorbed in my head, but let me try to relay my process:

- I have a good knowledge of what has been in retail for the last 20 years because that was part of job as a fashion buyer, (right down to the items that sold and the items that were slow to sell).

- I travel a lot and absorb all that I can - what's on the street, in the media and in stores.

- Sure, I read mags, trend houses and online resources too. Always interesting.

- Runway shows are extremely important. That's where it all starts.

- Talking to retail staff and checking markdown rails is important.

- Again, observing street style in urban areas is important.

All this info is stirred up into a melting pot in my head and I draw my own conclusions.

For me, the most interesting part in all of this is as follows:

- which trends filter down from the runway shows and how long does it take for them to filter down.

- which trends became mainstream; which stayed fringe.

- observing the trend differences in countries.

- observing the public's reactions to trends.

- which trends have died on the runway but are alive and kicking on the streets because WE have the power to keep a trend alive.

I love this stuff

Hi Fiona,

I'm not Angie but I thought I would direct you to the link below. While not necessarily Angie's inspiration sources, you will find heaps pf blogs that the members here use for inspiration

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....tion-blogs

I thought this might be helpful until Angie drops by.

Hi Angie,
I read that you closely follow the fashion trends. I would like to start doing more of this myself. What magazines/websites do you go to for information about the current styles and trends? Please forgive me if this has already been covered, and would you be kind enough to direct me to the post(s)?
Many Thanks!
Fiona
