OK, so more research to do! I so appreciated all the feedback. Sarah, thanks so much for pointing out the Trotter boot -- I had seen it but ruled it out as the reviews (on Zappos) kept talking about it being great for folks with wide feet. But, on second look, I see that it actually comes in a narrow so I think I might order that because I really am wanting a true cognac (that is lighter--thanks for your input Angie!). I'll report back!

Another vote for the lighter colour, but you can't go wrong either way. Wearing cognac accessories and footwear is ideal if you don't want to wear the shade close to your face.

I am also looking for cognac booties and have fussy feet. I like those Aldos, but they are darker than what I (personally) am looking for. So, I think it just depends on what you're after (as Sveta said). Another pair I'm thinking of trying are the Trotter's Chelsea boot, which also comes in a true cognac, although I haven't seen it in person (and I can't seem to select that color to show you directly). Good luck.

I prefer Aldo boots for color and for the style but you cannot go wrong with any of them. Have you tried to build outfits with them, which one works better for you - because in the end what matters is what YOU like.

I appreciate you all's input. And, I will add that I also took a go at the Sam Edelman Pettys but when I've tried walking around the house they are bugging me because of slipping on the heel so I think those will have to go back. Ideally, I would like a boot the color of the Pettys . . . for comparison, I've posted a photo of all three (but the color of photos seems to always be a bit "off"). Another plus on the Aldos is no loop on the back (less to stick out when wearing long skinny jeans).

I wear the same clothing colors as you and am a winter with the same hair coloring.

Personally I have found true cognac difficult to wear next to my skin (for example in sandals) because it's too warm toned for me. The leather color that looks best on me IMO is a cool dark chocolate or espresso brown similar to the Aldo booties. For that reason I have leather shoes, bags, and belts in that dark espresso color but not in lighter browns (aside from some very cool taupes). I will say that it is harder to find this dark brown sometimes than cognac. I've found that this dark brown pairs well tonally with dark rich colors like eggplant, forest green, navy/ink, some burgundies, grays, and black. It also bookends my hair.

I prefer the look of the Aldos (if they can be made comfortable with an insert) but the Clarks are good too, and I know they are comfy shoes.

Neither of those look cognac to me - but that may be ok if you are a winter. I like the darker color but personally wouldn't wear it with black or navy, and only maybe with gray. The lighter gives you more contrast and a more casual look.

Hi Angie and the YLFabbers! So I've been looking for a great cognac short bootie for casual wear for a couple months now. I loved the casual fall "uniform" you posted recently wearing your short cognac boots with your black/white plaid shirt and white jeans, etc. I want to recreate this type of look for me among other looks.

To complicate things, I have low volume feet/fussy feet. So, after much looking, I recently ordered both of these (see below) and I actually like both although neither are *perfect*! The Clarks are quite comfy but are a little more reddish than what I envisioned and I'm wondering how much of a problem this will be as I try to work them into various outfits. The Aldos are not quite as comfy but are not bad at all--i can wear them fine (especially if I add an insert). The color is nice from the standpoint that it is multi-toned (for lack of a better term) and I like that look. But, although they are named "Cognac" they are significantly darker than what I was looking for.

So, I'm wondering about your all's thoughts on the "Color of Cognac" in terms of versatility, etc. I have dark brown hair and "winter" coloring. I wear a lot of black, grey, navy, white and brights.

Do you all have any thoughts on this or any other observations about which of these boots you like better (and why)? I am all for being picky but at this point I would like to make a decision on one of these because the weather is turning such that I really am needing/wanting to wear them!

Thanks in advance for your input.
