(My very dark trouser jeans are by Elie Tahari and they are dressy!)

Like you, notstaf, I wear dainty shoes (not chunky). Unlike you, I don't wear heels! My highest heels are 1 and a half inches. I have VERY big pants and jeans. Every year, they seem to get wider, longer, and bigger :)

I wear my dainty loafers and boots with them. See Finds:

FYI, I wear two types of full length across all widths of pants:

The new shorter full length that rests on the vamp of the foot.

Hems that scrunch at the vamp if they are narrow , or skim the surface of the ground if they are wide.

Suz - I think the Paige Harper wouldn't be full length on me, but that's a great look!! Now to find something similar in my inseam!

Irina - I do get the idea! Thanks for the suggestions!

Brooklyn - You are very much the queen of stompy boots. I tend to prefer more delicate shoes, which I think is part of the problem here. I'll have to experiment.

Sal - Glad you know what I mean! You and I often have some of the same proportion preferences, so I'll take your tip about trousers seriously. I think oversized trousers in particular look very modern.

Carla - Yes: where did all the dark denim go?!?

Erin - I have WONDERFUL pair of dark wash wide flare travel jeans from Me + Em that read as trouser jeans. Can't recommend their stretchy fabrics and knits enough, but I haven't found their true denim to be as wonderful.

Kyle - Agree about trouser jeans, but -- eye-rolling myself -- they are *too* dressy for the everyday look I'm shooting for.

Trouser jeans, in my opinion, are the dressiest, and I know J. Crew has a nice trouser jean option.

I have been looking for a pair of wide leg, full length, dark wash jeans. I do like the look of the Gap jeans Jules mentioned. I follow Annie Castano on Instagram (justanniecastano), and she was wearing a pair of dark denim jeans by Me + Em in a recent post. I think the style she was wearing is called the Kick Flare Travel Jean, but there is also another option called the Cotton-Blend Denim Kick Flare Pant.

I’ve attached a photo of my current darkest jean (see pic below ‘cause the finds looks faded and is styled rolled.). It’s a casual outfit, but I do find the seaming down the front a dressier look (for a jean) than a conventional straight leg. I have a mid calf boot (finds) that I wear to ‘close the gap’ in winter, but I’m on the lookout for a lower heeled pointy toe replacement. The heel height on these is just too high for all day comfort - but I love the higher shaft.

When I wear my wide leg jeans unrolled (finds) they are puddling jeans. I usually wear them with a pointy toe shoe. I roll them for winter - cause snow and slush - and wear them with the higher shaft booties.

I had to replace all my bottoms this year due to a significant size change, and couldn’t find much really dark wash (my preference). I ended up with some very paled blue jeans, and have been enjoying them, but yes, they are more casual looking.

I know what you mean. Straight leg dark jeans felt easily work appropriate and a lot of what is around is a bit more casual.

If you want to lean more modern classic I would choose a moderate barrel leg, flare or trouser style with leather boots - higher shaft, low heel, refined. Or loafers and cool socks.

I have been wearing more trousers to work and less jeans - the three pairs below all feel modern and dressy. I have relaxed fit jeans but in a lighter wash which often feels more casual.

I generally wear chunky or platform boots with my pooling denim. I also think they work with floor length flares. I know conventional wisdom was that you should wear heels with flares, but I think things have moved on. Flares or full length wide leg jeans in a darker wash might be a good dressier option.

I have two pairs in dark wash (the second is lighter in the photo, dark IRL) COS tapered leg and Massimo Dutti trouser jeans. I wear tapered with anything. The full length looks better with loafers and refined Chelsea boots.

Both brands don’t sell these styles anymore but have very similar.

Plus, boots I wear with these jeans - both old, no links, sorry. But you get the idea.

I own the Paige Harpers, which are full length but not pooling on me. I also own the slightly less dark but still a bit "dressy" Everlane Curve that expose my ankle bone. And some ecru curve jeans. (I find white and ecru jeans also read as "dressier.")

I wear the Paige jeans with everything from sneakers and oxfords in warmer weather to dressier booties with round, square, almond, or pointed toes. I will wear the curve jeans with boots and booties that have a shaft high enough to close the gap.

In my climate and with my lifestyle, I can't really wear pooling denim -- just too messy with the rain!

I added some Finds that might qualify as the type of dressier and current jean you are searching for. Another option for dressy would be a jean in a more luxe fabric, i.e. metallic or velvet.

Jules - I found your Gap jeans on the US webpage here: https://www.gap.com/browse/pro.....&ap=7 Very close to something that would work for me, though I don't prefer front patch pockets. I bet they're smashing on you!

Lisa - Those Paige Anessa jeans are great, and I even found them in a long hem line... though not in the kind of un-distressed wash I'm wishing for. They look great on you!

Bonnie - So clever to wear a chunky sandal with socks. You are always so on trend. :)

Posting a few of me shoe options below. Still trying to embrace the Return of Socks.

I've been wearing my longest jeans with my oxfords and sneakers. I plan to try them with my new fisherman sandals with socks when it gets cooler. I like a chunkier style shoe rather than a sleek style under the longer length of the jeans.

I added a pair of Paige wide leg cropped denim and straight leg cropped denim to my wardrobe this season. I've put mine in the finds, and I've seen both styles in darker washes if these are still too light for your needs.

On me crops are close to full length (because I'm short) but I think both cropped and long wide legs are popular right now. For boots, I've noticed kitten heels everywhere. The pointy (or almond if you don't like pointy toes) look nice peeking out from wide legs.

I've also seen squared toes with block heeled booties and added the Marc Fisher I got during NAS into the finds too.

I try on both Paige jeans with the Marc Fisher booties and some Adidas sneakers in this post (I ended up keeping both pairs of jeans).

I have the High Rise Stride Jean from the Gap in the dark wash and love them.
Boots are tricky for sure. For long wide jeans I would look for slim profile styles with more refined (eg not chunky) heels. I wear mine mostly with narrow sneakers like adidas. Living in a messy winter environment wider leg styles are mostly for transitional weather and I switch to straight legs for true winter. Can you rethink boots vs shoes? For me if I’m not protecting my clothing and you can only see shoe part I might as well not be wearing boots (and when I truly need them I also need different pants).

Hi all: it's been a while!

When I started here back in the dark ages, my everyday work look relied heavily on neat jeans in dark washes — first ankle-length skinnies and then demi-crop flares, both from J Crew, in which I had multiples on heavy rotation. This served me year round: I'd go sockless in the warm weather and shoulder season and then switch to booties in the cooler months.

As pants have relaxed in the past years, I've embraced wider widths and slouchier shapes and have embraced Angie's principle that trendy denim looks elevated. (It's true!)

But as cooler temps are upon us and I'm struggling with a couple of things:

1) What shoes to wear with floor-length and/or pooling denim in cool weather? Is there any kind of boot that can go under a silhouette like this without feeling too heavy?

2) What is the a modern-day equivalent of the neat jean in a dark wash? I've been looking for wider shapes in dark washes and coming up empty. Help!

Posting finds below of old and new styles from my closet.
