My suggestion would be to start off with a fitted and sleeved sheath. Choose a neckline and colour that tickles your fancy and go from there.

You might like a fit-n-flare dress. For this occasion, a sweater dress sounds ideal as they tend to be cosy and more casual than other dresses.

By far the best and most flattering dress style for petites is the shift dress or a V necklined wrap dress......after saying that, tulip style will work fairly well too.

Another idea i just had would be to buy a bronze (or gold?) sequin tulip skirt and wear a black chiffon short sleeve blouse tucked in? what do you think?

Sage, I love that dress! I'm not an hourglass, but I'd wear that for sure!

Thank you for your replies :-) i like the idea of the tulip style, it's for a christmas dinner at my house with my husbands family so with my in laws my husbands sister and her husband grand parents aunties and uncle, and cousins. It won't be very dressy but i don't want to just wear jeans so i thought it might be nice to try and find a dress thats sort of "day time party ish" but not sure that exists haha maybe you can inlighten me :-/
I'm 1m68 so i guess i used the wrong word when i say petite i meant that i'm thin and small boned, and have a balanced figure (though very small breasts) and i'm prefer something above the knee but maybe not really mini :-) Thanks so much for your help!

Hey Carina,

We're pretty similar - petite hourglass with a strong preference for the jeans/trouser look! I believe Sage is referring to the tulip shaped dress which really gives the appearance of a voluptuous derriere because it poofs out and hugs our curves so well

I suggest a belted shift dress if you want a formal look. The rockability, vintage dresses from Modcloth and Anthropologie also really flatter our shape. The key is to look for an A line skirt so like a skater dress but with a more structured fabric and hits at the knee to avoid the cute image.

Two questions for you though, are you looking for something on the mini, knee or midi length and are you short-waisted (torso < leg), balanced (torso = leg) or long-waisted (torso > leg)?

x Sunny

Hi Carina! It sounds as if you have a similar shape as I do, hourglasss figure with a flat behind :-)
My favourite dresses dip in at the waist, are roomy over bottom and hips, and come back in at the thighs/knees. This dress might not be your style, but this cut can be found in several differents styles.

Hey there! could you advise me on the best type of
dress to wear when you have a flat derriere? I'm 27 and a size 6/8 uk
with a petite hourglass figure apart from the flat bottom lol, i thought
a skater dress but then i really don't like that style and think
perhaps it's more for younger girls. I never wear dresses even though i
love fashion i allways stick to jeans and trousers because i think they
don't suit me, and i'd like to finally find a dress to suit me for the
holiday season. Please help!!
