I don't have much to offer with regard to shoe style, but I just want to say that I think you're right on track to watch how different heel heights affect where the hem falls. I am very short (5'2") and have found that I generally look best if the hem goes almost all the way to the floor--so I can't wear very high heels with anything maxi.
