The girls have you sorted but I just wanted to add that the Geordies (natives of Newcastle) are some of the friendliest, funniest people on the planet (I'm biased as my in laws are from that area). I know you will have a blast but the dialect may be a shock at first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PrMaVjHS74

From my experience the Geordies like to embrace glamour, I think a bright coloured pea coat and a puffer for the chillier days would be a good start.

*Waving from the Midlands in the UK* We've having a bad winter this year with the earliest snowfall in years. Last year was bad too. I have recently invested in a puffer coat ah blissfully warm. I have just bought a pair of doc martens too as we do seem to suffer from icy footpaths I have yet to test them in the ice though. Our infastructure isn't really geared to cope with snow and ice so we do get caos for a few days when it snows x

Non-British British resident here. You won't go wrong with what Angie recommended. Newcastle is to the north from where I live and thus get even colder than my corner of England, so all I have to say is - wrap up warm. Nice puffer or good coat with high wool content should do the job. Get yourself good, quality boots as well. Hat too. I don't see how you can stand out, apart from maybe sometimes looking too prepared for winter, which does not worry me - I know I AM warm. My experience is that the British still don't take the winter very seriously as the rest of the Europeans do (continental) in terms of what they wear, how the roads are treated (or not) or cars driven, but the last two years are changing that perception rapidly. One more thing, practice walking on icy pavements, it sounds crazy but the cycle of snow falling, then not being cleaned, then frozen overnight, then thawed a bit during the day, then refrozen overnight is probably the worst aspect of the winters here.

There's a cold weather forecasted for the end of this week, so it's probably a good idea to keep an eye on Newcastle to get the idea of what temperatures will be, as that should be the best guideline for you.

Thanks, meercat! Where do you live right now?

I have never been to Newcastle, England. But I expect that the outerwear is usual Euro style - wool coats with fab scarves, hats and gloves.

Perhaps the British ladies will chime in?

It looks we are moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. I will need to buy a warm winter coat here to wear there--and soon! My husband's company will be flying he and I over to find a place to live before we move with the kids and cats. What styles should I be looking for? I don't want to stand out as a "tourist" or be ill-equipped for windy, cold weather. Help!

P.S. Love the new site!
