Yes, go with a full length dress or skirt - it is going to be regal on your height! Just make sure the fabric is dressy - no knits or jersey IMO.
Good luck with finding the right dress!

The wedding is pretty formal so I want to steer clear of short dress and flats. I love heels but I usually have my fellow tall girls with me on nights out to balance things out!!! I know I should "own" it, even when I'm around a shorter group of people, but I want to be 100% comfortable, especially considering I will only know a handful of people at the wedding!

I think long is the way to go! And so begins the quest to find a dress long enough .... at the end of summer .... in Ireland!!

Doh ....

I am your height and close in the body type as well - more hourglass but with pear tendencies. I totally get the feeling of towering over everybody else although I wear heels more comfortably now in my 40s.
How formal is the wedding? Full length dress can be stunning on tall you and you can wear flats with it if it makes you more comfortable. Pointy flats would work especially well. Just make sure the dress is from a dressier fabric, jersey may be too casual.

Hi Ruth,
You might look at Eileen Fisher dresses like this one:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ei.....ts-_-1_8_A
Or other styles. I think you would like the fabrics. The asymmetrical cowel neck is floaty and comes in a variety of colors.
I can't find the lantern dress here but it sounds like just what you are looking for. Her I am wearing one. They are fitted on top and flow out.

Hi Ruth,

I'm not Angie, obviously.

You've pretty much described my body type and challenges I have. And the type of clothes, especially dresses, I prefer. I also adore B&W. Waving from my 6ft2, btw ;-)

I see you are not comfortable with towering everyone. I personally don't see that as an issue. I have embraced my height, it is what I look like and that's it. I never hunched to be closer in height to my friends. Btw, a some of my best friends are in the petite spectrum, coincidence or not.

Wardrobe-wise, while I mostly wear flats and lower heeled shoes because they are more comfortable and gentler on my feet, high heels and I are no strangers.

I will link to a few outfits that popped to my mind immediately as I was reading your post:

1. This is very, very classic outfit which I hope to use as inspiration at one of the weddings some day. Plain white button down and pencil skirt, sounds so bland, doesn't it. But to me this is simple, chic and full of character. I can easily see it being worn with shoes of any sort and heel height.
http://youlookfab.com/2010/05/.....g-outfits/

2. This one is again using white button-down, but with the full length skirt.
http://youlookfab.com/2011/05/.....h-friends/

There is also a section of YLF blog archive which might be worth reading through:
http://youlookfab.com/category.....ding-wear/

Finally, I would wholeheartedly recommend browsing Angie's outfits, they are inspirational in every way and I am sure you might get some ideas from them.
http://youlookfab.com/category.....s-outfits/

Ok so I'm trying to find out what to wear to my boyfriend's friend's September wedding. I'm 27, 5'11'' (borderline 6 foot!) and my boyfriend is the same height, as are most of his friends. I usually wear flats with skinny jeans and tops on a night out, or flat sandles and a dress (rarely getting overly dressed up!). I love simple styles (black, white and turquoise are my go-to colours)!

I'm fairly pear shaped, (small chest which i'm happy with and don't like to make look any bigger), and big hips. I love dresses that are fitted around the chest, tight at the upper waist and float down (forgiving on the hips!). The material is fairly important to me too, I hate anything that doesn't float down. I don't know the names of the fabrics but I find with my big hips that if the material doesn't "float" down it adds serious pounds to my mid-section!

I absolutely hate flats with any above-the-knee dress at formal occasions but I don't want to be towering over everyone else so I need advice on something to wear?? I have a gorgeous jersey style strappy maxi dress that is actually long enough on me to wear flats (nothing worse than it swinging around the ankles!!) but I've worn it to death so I can't really wear it to the wedding. Would love something elegant and simple, wearable with flat sandles, so probably full length.

Any advice?? I don't do sparkles or debs-style dresses!

Thanks!
Ruth
