Brianna,

So odd that I too dislike brown bottoms. I have tons of pants...not a brown one in the bunch. I am not sure why either?? I do have brown boots that I love..and lots of brown heels.

I just got rid of a beautiful brown tweedish jacket...loved it on the hanger...hate it on me....brown always looks muddy and muted against my face...I believe Angie said it was not a *fresh*color...I agree with that.

I instinctually add cream, or else colours, to brown--turquoise and coral pink are favourites. I'll write more on colours on a new thread when I have time.

For some reason I do not like brown as a bottom! I strongly dislike brown pants in particular. I'm not sure why. My brown items are both dresses. I have a brown tweed jacket too. I'm not counting my brown boots because I have no trouble wearing those.

Ah, only just saw Angie's post. So brown + bright(s) does work? *mentally noted* Good to know

I very much agree with Shiny on how brown can be a softer look, even though it might not be the most flattering colour in itself. Especially during the cold winter months, I appreciate the cozyness and warmth of brown as a colour. It gives a feeling a bit like you're like wearing hot chocolate :)

So, how about a solution to wear brown on the bottom only, and try to combine it with fresher colours? (love Antjes' suggestions!) Blue and brown go really well together, so I could see something like a chocolate skirt with a peacock buttondown. For the warmer months, the addition of white or cream like Shiny suggests should brighten it up.

I'm very interested to see your items and what the verdict will be

Cheetah goes with EVERYTHING when you’re Antje :0)

Shiny, your rambling is hilarious but you make perfect sense in my book. Taylor, thanks for the validation.

I wear a rich chestnut brown, but with STRONG colours like red, yellow or turquoise, which is to Antje’s point. Brianna, you might like to start a separate thread on your colour journey.

Do post your items, Brianna. I also don't feel at my best in brown, but I do wear it and like it with red and cheetah accents (e.g. brown top, jeans, red scarf, cheetah flats, just as an example). The red peps it up.

I've also worn it with dark turquoise and teal (and cheetah goes with that combo as well. But is there anything cheetah doesn't go with? ;-))

Brianna,

I have dark hair and green eyes..fair skin and I agree with Angie 100000 percent. Brown has never looked good on me. I am a winter as alot of dark haired light eyed, fair skin women are.

Really she is right , Autumns looks best in browns. Brown is" Blah ".against most skin tones. Bronze is sooo much better.

I have tried over the years to add browns and they just never looked right, so go with YOUR instincts...now black and stark whites love me....they might love you too!!

This is tricky because I think there is also very much an age factor to it. Black can be hard to wear when you get older. Brown, IMO, is a much softer and forgiving neutral.

Then there is also the contrast issue Imogen talks about on her site - if you have black or dark hair, black looks great because of the contrast. But if you are blonde with light eyes and fair skin, black can look jarring.

I have both brown and black in my wardrobe. But, I am thinking that grey is actually the best neutral for me all around. It's a cool color and I look best in cool colors. And it's lower contrast and softer and more forgiving now that I'm in my 40s. I feel like grey tops brighten up my face and make it glow, whereas black tops have a way of making me look tired and my skin looks dull.

In fact, I have photos of me as a child, when my hair was super light blonde, wearing black to dress up as a witch for halloween, and even though I was only 11 years old, I think I look OLD and horrible and haggard. LOL. And often if I wear a black dress, I feel this effect very acutely - I feel like a witch! A brown dress, much better.

Brown tops, I look less tired - and it brings out the green in my eyes. But it's still not ideal. With either brown or black tops, I need a necklace that adds color or brightness near my face.

But - brown isn't so bad. Especially if a dose of white is added to it. Brown slacks or skirts can go with a lot of sumptious, rich, softer colors too, so that is a plus for it as a neutral.

I'm rambling now (because I'm trying to figure this all out for myself too!) .... but I think another factor is jewelry: which looks better on you, gold or silver? If you say silver, then black is a better neutral than brown. If you say gold, then brown is a better neutral than black.

I definetly look best in silver jewelry, and I probably wear silver about 90% of the time. But I don't think I look too horrible in gold either.

There's also the factor of my dye job. If my hairdresser goes with low-lights and brings out the natural red that's in my hair, then browns and gold jewelry look better, hand's down. But if my hairdresser goes with highlights and amps it up (like my hair is currently) then black, grey, silver.

My hairdresser tells me that there are three types of blonde highlights: ashy blonde, golden blonde, and neutral blonde. I definetly look best in neutral blonde highlights. Ashy highlights look absolutely horrible on me, and so do golden blonde highlights. So this tells me that I can possibly go either with browns or blacks. Does that make sense?

Whereas I think Angie is more of an ashy blonde (near-white blondes are), so it makes sense to me that she would look horrible in brown and great in black.

Basic brown can look blah and lifeless against the skin unless you’re a strong Autumn like Greenglove. She wears brown like I have seen no other (and I’ve met Jean in person!)

Rich, rich, rich chestnut browns are better and so are shades of bronze. They seem to add a little more life to a look. My perception is that brown tends to make most people look sleepy. It’s just not a fresh shade. As a very strong Spring, brown is my worst colour. If you were my client Bri, I wouldn’t be putting basic brown into your wardrobe unless it’s a rich chestnut.

I'm curious as well. I wore a lot of brown a couple of years ago (was doing both brown & black then but not together). Since I bought my black Coach a year & 1/2 ago I switched to black instead of brown probably 90% of the time & am just starting to incorporate it back in my daily wear. I do a lot of black/brown combo's - probably because I have several leopard pieces & they can pull the look together easily.

Angie, you mentioned that brown is hard to wear. I'd never heard that before. Can you elaborate a bit? I have a couple of brown items and I've kind of felt that way about them but I have no idea why.
