I will say that despite having 50+ mineral eyeshadow colors, I use the SAME eyeshadow every morning. Liners, I will switch up, but in a rush, I'm going for the basic few swipes of Bobbi Brown + and my *color of the day* Urban Decay liner. Done. No thinking involved.

Doing something different requires putting in a little effort, and being brave enough to leave the house -- not wash your face and start over!

Other than throwing out all that is expired, I tend to look at sites such as beautyeditor.ca for a breakdown on the latest runway trends. The site also explains how to translate these to real life as well as analyses makeup trends as sported by movie stars. I find that currently eye make is a lot softer, blended and the texture has moved from powder to cream based for smoky eyes for a more modern look.

Lisa Eldridge as mentioned by others above, is an expert at decoding trends & application - watching her videos inspires me to change it up!

It's hard for me to wrap my mind around updating one's makeup look, too. It implies doing the same thing every day first of all, which I never ever do... including wearing makeup every day.

But it does occur to me that over the years my makeup look HAS changed. The cosmetics ladies DO suggest different things. When I first came of makeup age, I did orchid shadows and a rosy lip. Then I went to a more nude eye and lip. Then I had a phase of shimmery gold. Now it's a dark eye and lip/cheek stain.

Or my three-in-one, that I've been doing a long time. Before they came out with an actual product, I'd just take a lipstick and use it as a three-in-one. I think that came from traveling a lot for work.

Junk the expiring stuff and head to the counter to let yourself get salestalked into replacements. LOL seriously that's what I do.

I also make sure to check every once in a while if my foundation shades still matches as most of my skincare products have lightening ingredients (such are the skincare products in asia)

Hi Ornella! For lip color that offers both pigmentation and glossiness I strongly recommend YSL Glossy Stains. They're lightweight, long-wearing, comfortable, the range is spectacular, and they hardly transfer if I smooch the children lightly They're not cheap but they're worth the splurge; they are my go-to in the summer, I love them!

Ask for samples so you can try them in daylight. Nordstrom and Sephora are good for this. If the texture of your skin has changes since you last updated foundation and skin care, start there.

I have trouble thinking about it in terms of the "makeup of the day" because while I do wear make-up, I don't want anything dramatic, usually not even for evening. So I'm not so much into, this year it's the smoky eye and pale lip, next fall it's the opposite. And no orange lipstick here, either, and no purple, so it's some form of pinky-berry-nude.
It is very easy for me get in a rut though,, so I try to shift seasonally--lipstick shades better for winter vs. summer. But lipstick doesn't stay put!

I like the idea of mostly making intermittent changes just for me--by trying a new color or product here or there is interesting and might turn up a good new look. So not really trend-oriented but change-up and experiment-oriented.
I don't like to spend a lot of $$ in this area just to be chasing the next new thing, so I may read about and "consider" a number of fun-sounding things (don't they all sound like they're the fountain of youth AND will do the laundry!) and then try to pick one or 2 things to try.
Probably time to try more retinols or similar but I was leery. Like Suz, once a while ago I used a product and got a major blistering reaction.

I was thinking about trying the Babydoll mascara, though!

O, I only wear mascara and lip color so for me I look at magazines and whatever feels fresh for my lips each season. Usually I buy one or two new tinted balms/glosses to supplement my standard year-round shades of red and orange, and they usually last through the season and I'm on to something new for the next. For example last fall was plum and soft baby pink, this spring is a deep pinky red. I have found the tinted Maybelline Baby Lips tinted balms a great on-their-own shade as well as a decent base (decent pigment, more subtle shine). For eyes, I picked up the YSL mascara Angie recommended a while back and LOVE it.

Thanks for the useful input.

I live a in smallish city with not that generous make-up offer and I dare say this is not fashion capital of the region, so consulting makeup advisers is not a realistic option.

Peri :: you reminded me of a beautiful lady I used to see regularly on my train after work years ago when I lived in Dublin - she had worked at Givenchy counter (or at least I thought so I saw the pin on her clothes) and I have actually been stalking the counters in all major department stores and shops, but never saw her at work. Always on train though and I wanted to look like her (make-up wise). Good tactics for sure, I'll remember it next time I'm in a big centre.

I don't wear much make-up btw and the major areas for any consideration are eyes and lips. Lip colour or shine is a must and I've been on a hunt for something that bridges the lipstick - gloss gap, i.e. sufficient pigmentation and delicate shine.

Angie :: I remember thinking I should get curler after your blog post. Thanks for the reminder.

texstyle :: a girl after my heart - I love book recommendations. Will look into that one.

Una :: speaking of skin and rich moisturiser, that would be my no.1 concern - soft, nourished skin. I have just figured out the right winter care for me and now that cream is too rich for the spring. That *is* a whole another topic.

I used to do very little makeup. I am still quite minimal but with a job dealing with the public more, I do use highlighter to brighten my look. As a concession to aging, I toned down eyeliner from black to dark brown and lightened up lip color. Also use a really rich moisturizer on my face. I found one from Kiehls that is expensive but makes a huge difference and gives a bit of dewy sheen even in my dry climate.

In terms of inexpensive tests in addition to the makeup counters try ons, I'll add on to what Mo says. The big drugstore brands ALWAYS have coupons available. Some of these you can just print out from online, some you just add to a loyalty card from the store website, or if you have something like cartwheel from Target you just use your smartphone.

So if you are buying makeup from Target, Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens you really don't need to spend the retail price to test something out (especially if you stack with store discounts, you can occasionally get things for pennies).

Also I know Rite Aid will take back any opened or used beauty product that you've decided doesn't work for you as long as you kept the receipt. There doesn't seem to be time limit. https://www.riteaid.com/saving.....-guarantee

Oh, seconding the Lisa Eldridge rec! She has many great videos.

I suggest scouting counters. Look for an MA whose look you admire and who seems friendly and ask away. There is no such thing as "best line"...the MAs matter more than the line. Go at non crowded times and get a makeover. Buy one or two things you like and ask them to write down the rest. You can then either go back, or find cheaper drugstore versions...either way, less guess work.

First, you have to identify your "usual" self and usual purchasing habits. I probably have 20 of the same tone of lipgloss from different makers and brands. I LOVE nude/sparkle/shine glosses, and in my head, the next is ALWAYS different than the one I have at home....yet a *family photo* showed that they were all pretty interchangeable - MAC, Bobbi Brown, Stila, Nars...all the same. Do you know what my go-to lip color is now? It's Bobbi Brown clear lip balm. My natural lip is the color I've been trying to BUY for years. An update for me is anything bold, because I don't have those.

The same with Blush. I love the look of bright blush, but always came home with blushes that could be bronzers. Now, I go for the bright colors and I ALWAYS let the makeup artist show me how it's supposed to go on, because once at home with something new, you will tend to under-do it if you are on the fence about a new look. I can compare that fresh from the counter look with my at home look and adjust.

Know yourself, and then kick it up a notch. Eyes are always a good one because we tend to stick in a rut of our go-to colors. I have been purple shadow and purple liner forever - not brown, not black...The last time I went to the makeup counter, the artist suggested OLIVE as a new neutral on me, and I loved it. Never ever would have picked it myself (because I was busy studying the latest purple!). An update doesn't mean you're coming out of the house like a makeup model wearing ALL the things...it can just be one area you want to boost.

It seems counter-intuitive but I've been wearing less make up as I've gotten older rather than more.

I had used a mineral foundation for quite a few years and recently discovered that it was no longer flattering to my skin; it looked chalky. So now I've just been using a tinted BB cream that helps even things out a bit and a small amount of cream blush.

And I no longer wear eye shadow. Sometimes a thin line of eyeliner and always mascara.

For lips, I like the tinted lip balms from Fresh.

I have been sort of haphazardly trying new things at bargain prices through BigLots. Eyeshadow primer? Sure, as part of a shadow set for $3! Liquid purple liner? At $2, it's worth playing around with! Brush to apply liquid foundation instead of one's fingers? Coming right up for $1.
Because I don't do a lot of makeup and because I'm not sure which new formulation, or application technique, or color, I'll stick with - cheap test drives are working out great for me. My non negotiables are foundation that matches and doesn't make me break out and non clumping mascara. I will pay full price for these every time. Everything else is up for grabs to play around with.

I've been undertaking this project over the past month or so. First I picked up a new lippie. Then I went to Sephora for a makeover! (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....and-during) I bought the things I liked and then when I got home tossed everything old/icky/of unknown provenance. I've also been peeking at some beauty blogs (http://thebeautydepartment.com/) and pinterest for inspiration.

I usually go to a few different make-up counters and see what different looks they apply on me. They always use way more make-up than I wear on a daily basis but I find the colours and application methods are an update and I take what I like from each or none...

I think the colors you are choosing to wear, as well as the formulations are important for an updated look. Make sure you are still wearing the right color for your skin tone if you wear foundation. If you've been wearing a liquid, is it natural looking enough or could it be better? I've found powders to be too "dry" looking on me, but after my regular foundation I do use a very small amount of foundation powder, applied with my fingertip to cover any flaws and that works really well for me. What color of blush are you wearing and where on the cheek or cheekbone do you apply it? I found that wearing less blush and on mostly just the higher part of my cheekbone (as opposed to the "apples" of the check or under the cheekbone) works well to help lift the face.

I really found the book Makeup Wakeup to be helpful as I've gotten older and felt I needed some additional input. I have no affiliation with it but just enjoyed many of the tips (but I don't necessarily buy the products mentioned in the book).

Lipcolor is always fun and easy to change around but I find that I end up resorting to my tried and true (natural) colors in "nearly edible" formulations. Alba, Burts Bees, Aveda, etc.

Ah. Lip colour for sure. Gloss over lipstick gets my vote.

How about an eyelash curler?

When you say "update" - is it something particular - do you wear much makeup now? Are you looking for trends, or just a refresh?

I agree with the Bobbi Brown - even her website has a good "ten step beauty" thing on it (you could skip a few steps imo for everyday). I've done the chat on their website looking for color recos ... then I google to find the drugstore dupe :)

Have fun with it!

I agree - see what trends are in the magazines. But pick which ones will work. For instance, orange lipstick is never going to happen for me, no matter who says it's 'in'. lol
Not really make up, but I have started growing out my brows the last year. Not only are fuller brows 'trending' but they make us look more youthful.
