I wanted to add to Angie's comment about skirts, dresses, etc. My capsules are built totally around slacks. I tried dresses/skirts long ago and never felt they were "me." In fact, I felt like a poser.

In time I came to realize that my capsules have to be built around slacks. They work for me and I aways feel comfortable. That being said, I am on the constant look out for anything that will add interest to my capsules. This year I added color and it worked great. Good luck to you.

Jen, starting with the wide leg pants and denim skirt. Is it worth looking for say a couple of a pairs of lightweight casual wide leg linen pants for working from home? Also a couple of skirts in a similar cut and weight to your denim skirt.

I like the sound of the jersey cowl necks. And if they work for you get a few:) You may find some in block colours, patterns, mix it up a bit?

What about short sleeve (or sleeveless) wrap dresses in fabrics that are comfortable for WAH and worn with ballet flats or flat sandals.

Thanks JR - yes Vivienne files is my other online love...
Suz - oh yes it is nearly easier - and I love a tailored suit/worky thing etc... and that is easier to do. Mainly because I am not also doing house chores, and change after work into home clothes if I have to cook etc... I am def one who has to put on makeup to signal work time and guess that goes for clothing as well. AND our dominant season is a long hot summer which we are about to start ... Last year I think I defaulted to fitflops, and a couple of other outfits... I said to DH on the weekend that when I wore them to the USA a few months ago, 'homeless people' on public transport (and indeed the Nordies assistant!) commented on my clothes - I don't think this is a good thing! I think the other thing is that clothing is sooo expensive here in Australia so while I can justify the cost for 'office' clothes, for home gear in hot weather than only lasts a season I get more twitchy... Anyhow, i do usually end up with something but I was also thinking as I seek to review and garner the lovely new season pieces that Angie might have some insights on how to get diversity while being able to throw on things that you know suit you... Alas I cannot slip into little skirts (you all lived through my recent single dress acquisition recently!), strappy tops, skinnies etc... Anyhow, it is wonderful and fascinating to work from home too!

Jenanded....I hear your frustration. It sounds as if our figures might be quite different, but as someone who works at home and yet strives for some sense of style COMBINED with comfort I can deeply sympathize. I'm finding it an incredible challenge to figure out what to wear for my non-office job! People who work in an office think it sounds like bliss to work at home. But actually, I can't work in my PJs, even if I wanted to, because:

1. I have almost daily video meetings with colleagues across North America. Not only do I have to look presentable myself, but so does my home office. Eeek!

2. Somebody might (and often does) come to the door.

3. My daughter might bring somebody home.

4. I often have to go out.

Etc.

Anyway...I hear what you are saying. It would be nice to be able to feel that you weren't just wearing the same thing in a different colour over and over again. I'm actually one of those people who doesn't mind repeating outfits very much, but even I have a limited tolerance for this same top/ different colour thing.

Sigh. I have no real advice, except perhaps to go back to Nordies and that helpful salesperson. If you managed to put together a great office capsule, then I expect you will figure out the WAH capsule, too, in time. But please know, you are NOT alone. It SEEMS as if if should be easier, but I actually think for many of us it is a greater challenge than a really great office capsule or date capsule.

thanks everyone! I guess what I am saying is that I feel most comfy in say wide leg pants, or a denim skirt. The Nordstrom lady has me in a pair of slimmer 3/4 capris which are fine too. But there are not so many options apart from that which suit me. Then i go to tops... I am way curvy yet need a 'slim fit' top to show the vestige of waist, low neckline etc or I look like a brick... That means just a few tops will work... I am just trying to get some insights on how to diversify the look or I just have 3 bottoms and about 2 styles of tops which I am really comfy in. So today Angie I have my khaki capris, a cute red halogen cardi (from Nordies - yeah!) with one of those sleevless soft white button ups (I was probably doing imaginary life with Demi Moore in such a top under a boyfriend jacket over the long slim pants - you know that look), and I have little leopard flat sandals. So technically cute. But I feel like Hilda from the hockey team with all that white shirt, buttons etc over the G cup bra on a 5'10" frame -... The cardi breaks it up etc but I feel blah (now have double dose of eyeliner and perfume to try and feel more glam at my desk!)... Last week I had a matching red cowl neck jersey top and felt fab and got lots of compliments... But as I am trying to edit/review for summer I have the cowl jersey tops x 2... and seeking to fill in the rest. I guess button ups are less my thing but I am trying! Thanks! Anyhow, so how many different types of coloured jersey tops/t's can a girl wear!!

Jen, try also taking a look at the Vivienne Files blog. She builds a capsule wardrobe a couple of times a week, using different starting points. I don't know of any better place to get a visual education on how to combine clothes, build a capsule, and get the maximum mileage out of your closet. You're not going to get personalized advice there, but it's great for inspiration.

Jenanded, I'm not sure I'm answering the question, but pants are not your only bottom option. Skirts, dresses, jeans, cropped pants - and so many styles of each to choose from. Then there are layering third pieces, belts, shoes and other accessories that can change up the vibe of an outfit.

What are you wearing today that makes you feel frumpy?

Following all the wonderful edit/review blogs, when I reflect, there are just a few 'uniforms' - shapes, combinations, and colours - that really work for me. When I make a capsule and want say 5 or 6 tops and 4 pants, HOW do I get diversity but so everything is great for me. On the back of my bliss with my work capsule wardrobe (this week), the warmer weather here has me madly working on my WAH wardrobe... Today I am feeling decidedly fumpy and can see some of these pieces moving to orphanhood even though they are nice and fashionable pieces per se. Any clues oh great goddess of wardrobing Angie?
