Carol, Star is dead right about viscose. It's a plant based rayon. A natural fibre! Super soft and lovely on the skin. But a very unstable fibre that shrinks and creases terribly. It's best as a COMPONENT of a fabric - not as the 100% content of a fabric.

Carol fyi viscose is not polyester - like, it is plant based. Usually very soft but very weak and needs hand washing or falls apart. I only buy it if blended with a stronger material and always use a laundry bag.

Carol, I think so! In my experience, what I don't want to have happen, is that big pile of ironing that accumulates over time. A few items a day is manageable and habit ;)

Suz--it is a good point. Anything labeled as polyester, even if only 5% of the material, will irritate my skin. I think there are other poly-like fabrics....(viscose?) that don't bother me as much.
This problem could be exacerbated by heat, but will still exist in cold. The problem is eczema, which is, for those who don't know, simply a histamine reaction to things your body doesn't like, whether a fragrance, or eating dairy, or whatever. Like other people with eczema it is most sensitive in certain areas, which is often my legs. I can wear poly shirts all year long, and have no problem. But you're right, I would be uncomfortable in general in extreme heat in poly.

Star--hmm. I don't think I have seen a synthetic setting. Thanks for the tip.

Liz--what an interesting concept. I do food and supplements by feel, eating whatever makes me feel stronger when I hold it. Good idea to do with fabrics as well.

Angie--wow, thanks for sharing all that! My favorite are the white maritime cuffed pants--sadly sold out. Anything maritime really gets to me. I like the reminder to automatically iron certain items. I wonder if ironing is like flossing. If you try and do it here and there, it's an event to get through. But when you "habit stack" it after every morning brush, all of a sudden it's not so bad. I wonder if ironing becomes faster the more that you do it.

Here are my casual pants - all of which are part of a matching Summer co-ord. I wash them all myself, and they all need pressing. 100% cottons and linens usually do since I am intolerant of creases

Back to the trousers!

Suz, thanks for your comprehensive reply. Great stuff!

Carol, like Suz, I wear trousers as often as jeans. Personally, I LOVE wearing dressy trousers!!! I wear them as everyday wear. Soooooo comfy and polished! Modern, to my eye too. I don't like wearing casual pants nearly as much as dressy trousers - unless they are part of a fun Summer co-ord.

Here is my current assortment of dressy and dressier trousers. Some I have dry cleaned. Some I launder myself. I always press the ones I've laundered. To Suz's point, some hold up VERY well to creases post laundry and barely need a press. Others not as much.

I find fabric quality for H&M to be hit and miss. I've "shopped by feel" there, not even trying on a garment unless the fabric feels OK under my hand. This fabric could be great, drape well, launder well, and hold up well. Or not. The only way to know is to buy the pants so you can feel the weight and quality of the fabric, and do a scrunch test to see if it wrinkles and if the wrinkles fall out or stay in.

Like Suz polyester only irritates me in a humid environment. I have found most polyester items won't need ironing if line dried. Also your washing machine should have a setting for synthetics that could help with this.

Jenni. :)

Carol, I guess it might be important to know which polyester fabrics irritate you. I wonder if it is because your climate is predominantly warm. I can't wear polyester blouses in a humid, hot climate. They are unbearable. I don't think I've ever tried to wear polyester pants in such a climate but if I did, I doubt I would enjoy it.

Lightweight woven wool is surprisingly easy to wear across a wide range of temperatures and even humidity levels. For true summer heat with humidity, though, I'd be looking for a cotton/linen blend.

Cookie--I guess I am out of it. I thought it was literally sitting in front of the TV/laptop in lounge wear....maybe you have some Thai food.
Suz--thanks so much for the info and photos. I love the variety you have, and those burgundy ones would make me feel super sharp. Sounds like polyester is a forgiving material for care. I know a lot of people move away from it, but it sure does come in handy in these instances.
Jenni NZ--I wish! I am single, so they would end up there when I am about to fall asleep.

Cookie, you are hilarious!

Carol, I love those trousers .Nice shape, colour -- all of it!

I can't speak to whether they will irritate your skin or whether they will wash and iron easily, but I will say the following -- my own trousers are actually easier to keep crease free than my jeans, and they are easy to wash and wear. ALL of them. I most definitely wear them for Netflix, walks, travel, work from home -- all of it.

Let me tell you about them.

The ones I'm wearing now -- a very wet travel day—(the Wit and Wisdom navy pants) are made of a polyester/ rayon/ spandex fabric. The style is a moderate wide leg with very small pleats up top that lie flat. They wash in the washer, delicate, and I hang them to dry. I don't even have to iron them. On me, these are full length. These are 3 season pants for me -- fall, winter, spring. I also own a charcoal pair -- the fabric on those is a little different, and slightly warmer (so not really a spring pant) but equally easy care. The blue ones, especially, are workhorses, but I wear each at least once a week in their season.

Pair 3 are J. Crew straight legs -- also a poly blend, also cared for the same way. I don't wear in summer but I wear at all other times of the year.

Pair 4 are ankle length cigarette pants in lightweight wool. I can wear these on a cool summer day as well as all the other seasons, though I don't find them warm enough for full winter here if I am going outdoors for any length of time -- at least not without long undies. They also go in the washer (delicate) and I hang them to dry and touch up with the iron if needed.

The burgundy pants are loose cropped straights -- made of a polyester crepe. Super comfy and wearable spring, fall, and cool summer. (Of course my climate is much cooler than yours -- I get that.) Washable. Wrinkle free.

The Club Monaoo pant is a wool / poly blend -- again -- easy care, no wrinkles.

Finally, my cotton linen pants (summer and late spring/ early fall) from Dries van Noten. Again, I wash and wear these, touching them up with an iron.

Oh -- and my baggy pleated wool pants from BR are made of the same fabric as the cigarette pants -- a very lightweight wool with a tiny bit of stretch.

I don't know if that answers your question but what I'm trying to say is -- first -- not all polyesters are created equal. You might have to try them out and see.

Second, trousers can be extreely easy care, just like athleisure, honestly. I love the way they make me feel pulled together no matter what I'm doing. But a non-binding fit is key to that feeling.

Thanks, Angie. So...these pants, like a lot of pants, are polyester. Many leggings are cotton/spandex. That doesn't bother my skin.

"Netflix and chill--" I was referring to the pants' ability to be almost loungewear for around the house--they seem so casual, if you want them to be.

Noted about the ironing! Thanks.

Carol, those look like cute trousers! ( I don't understand the Netflix connection, though. What am I missing?)

Leggings are synthetic, and by the sounds of it, those don't irritate your skin?

Not sure how you can see capri leggings worn under the trousers either. They would be hidden - no?

Whether these need a press after a wash and line-dry depends on your
tolerance for creases Probably not too many creases given the nature of the fabric content! Personally, I would press them so that they looked crease-free and polished.

Trousers are a lovely thing that I have avoided without trying since back when I was trying to be more of a career woman. Very beautiful, but stiff-looking. Fussy.

Imagine my delight when a YouTuber recommended these H&M trousers--5 or so colors, machine-washable and priced to the point where it's fine if they get bunched up in a chair/on the floor overnight.

I like the tapered, breezy quality. So many cropped trousers I have observed the last few years are wide-leg, and often look awkward to me. These look smart and like they would work on many body types.

Two challenges--first, they are polyester. Cannot have polyester on my sensitive legs. But I saw a girl wearing capri leggings under similar trousers, and it looked adorable. I might try that.

Second--ease of washing? They are machine washable, but line dry. My question is: with this material, would you need to iron after line drying? Or should they look just fine without an iron?
